Chapter 79: Strange beings

[ERROR, ERROR, ERROR]

The screens kept blaring in his face and he didn’t know exactly what to do. He couldn’t tell what was wrong.

He decided to take a deep breath and calm his raging heart. As he did that, the pain slowly started to subside, and after a while, it was bearable.

He stood straight and leaned his back against a wall, his eyes pinned on the several error messages that had come up.

He tried to check what was wrong with the system, and the screen changed, showing him the details of the error.

[A major change in this world’s path has occurred. You have heavily altered the paths of this world.]

That was the only message that showed on the screen—nothing more, and nothing less. There was no penalty, no punishment, nothing like that. The only thing that was there was that message.

Riven read it over and over again, trying to understand if there was more, but there was nothing else. He could already tell that this error had come after he took out Mathias, who was an anchor to this story.

But because of this message, it also put him into thought, ’If this error came because of the change that I caused, doesn’t that mean, like the story, the destiny of this world has already been predetermined and must follow the story?

I already knew that, but not knowing that there was no possibility for change in this world without my interference just makes me feel off.

Frozen Fish, just who are you and why did you create this world?’

He shook his head. He didn’t want to allow thoughts like this to weigh him down too much—nothing would come out from him worrying this much.

He closed the system interface, took a deep breath, and walked out. But even as he tried not to let it show, his worry was still evident on his face.

[.....]

Somewhere far, far away, a black portal opened at the top of a mountain. Two figures stepped out of the black portal, and their presence brought darkness, covering the skies as if it were night.

The two of them stood at seven feet tall, covered in fog from head to toe. Only their red glowing eyes were a different color.

[##;";#!#;*;#;#] "The anomaly is in this world," the first figure spoke in a very weird language.

[#’:₦:₦:#::#?] "Then we should remove him immediately." The second one responded, and then both of them vanished from there. The darkness they left behind started fading away slowly after they left, but there was a faint darkness that lingered in that area even after it cleared.

[.....]

A few matches happened after Riven and Noel, but now someone of Riven’s interest finally took the stage—Lance.

He was paired with a young girl with black hair, while their opponents were two boys who used swords.

Riven sat there waiting for the match to start. Noel glanced at Riven—he knew something was up with his brother, especially after running that way and leaving the arena after the match, but he wasn’t sure if he should ask him.

The instructor soon announced the beginning of the match, and the terrain immediately changed into a destroyed castle—a castle that had been turned to complete rubble. The large fallen pillars and walls provided both cover and obstructions.

Lance and his partner stood there without moving. He shut his eyes and took a deep breath before muttering some words.

"Give me your grace," he said and looked up. He pulled his sword, and a golden glow surrounded the sword.

Riven watched the projection of the match from the screen, and when he saw Lance use that, he smirked.

’He’s using his blessing right off the bat. It seems after that incident with the wyvern, he’s become far more cautious,’ Riven thought. He folded his arms and reclined into his chair even more.

Lance shot into the battlefield. Though he was very fast, he still managed to be exceedingly agile, avoiding the rubble with ease.

The girl followed behind, but she kept a safe pace, as if they had talked about it before the match started.

The two boys also rushed in as fast as they could. When they saw that their only opponent was Lance, they immediately tried to flank him—they attacked from both sides.

Lance’s eyes flashed with a golden light. He suddenly moved at twice his speed. He blocked both attacks in an instant, took a step back, and then went in for his own attack. Both boys were stunned, but they knew better than to allow him to land an attack.

They blocked the attacks, but the force of the slash threw both of them back and into the rubble. They got up as fast as they could and tried to attack again, but when they looked up, they saw over a dozen ice blades floating above them.

The girl that had been behind Lance had been casting her spell quietly while he fought. Seeing the ice blades in the air, their focus shifted.

Their only option now was to use whatever skills or spells they had, but it seemed Lance and the girl had already prepared for that. She shot all the ice blades at them.

They were forced to turn their attention to the ice blades and block the attack, and in that time, Lance charged in. He moved fast and agile, reaching them both in seconds. He sent a kick into the chest of the first boy while he was trying to block the ice blades.

The boy coughed blood and fell backward. The second looked at his partner on the ground, and that short moment of distraction allowed one of the ice blades to stab into his chest.

He screamed out in pain, trying to retreat quickly, but Lance caught up to him. He cut him down immediately. After the first got kicked out, Lance turned to the second and took him out as well.

The dome went away and the terrain returned to normal. Lance stood there with the girl. He looked up into the stands, and his eyes met with Riven’s for a few seconds before he walked away.
