Chapter 274: The Cure

"Nothing to worry about?" screeched Alicia, her voice reaching a new height that made Réne cringe. "Did you seriously tell me not to worry about something that involved you?"

Letting out a sigh, Réne couldn’t help but smile. Alicia was so dedicated to him that it really did make him feel special. "No, that is not what I am saying," he assured her as he walked over and wrapped his arms around her.

Kissing the top of her head, he couldn’t help the smile on his face as he felt her melting into him. "Since this is important to you, it is important to me. I’ll talk to Bishop and get him to send a few teams out to get supplies and information. You and I both know that the Sins can’t do anything quietly. If there is any movement from them, we’ll hear something."

"I’m just worried," sighed Alicia as she rubbed her face against Réne’s chest. "Everything is just too perfect, and I am scared that that is going to go away, and I won’t be able to stop it."

"You’re right," agreed Réne. "I should have been more considerate about it. I’m sorry that I was so dismissive of your thoughts and feelings on the matter."

"It’s okay," smiled Alicia, looking up at the most important man in Country M. People were flocking from other regions to the New Dawn Sanctuary because of what he provided them. His name was whispered about with pride and reverence, and she was lucky enough to be his wife.

"Any word about the cure?" Réne asked, changing the subject. As soon as the words were out of his mouth, there was a knock on his door. Gently releasing Alicia, he guided her over to the sofa he kept in his office just for her and then opened the door.

"Just the man I wanted to talk to," smiled Réne as he stepped back and let Adam into the room. Eve slipped in after him and waved at Réne before going to sit beside Alicia. The two women were fast friends, and soon enough, they were giggling and laughing about something someone did.

Adam let out a grunt as he stretched his neck from side to side, sighing a bit as his back popped and cracked at the movement. Shrugging off his lab coat, he threw it on the floor. "There are no updates yet," he grumbled as he dropped into the chair in front of Réne’s desk. "I need more... people..."

Réne blinked for a moment before nodding his head. "How many do you need for this batch?"

"Fuck," grumbled Adam, wiping his face with his hand as if just the motion would be enough to dispel the tiredness. "As many as I can get my hands on. This latest adjustment should be perfect. Charles is certain of it, and I’ve gone over his figures. Just think of how the world will react to know that the New Dawn Sanctuary has solved the greatest crisis for humanity since the original sin."

Réne held back the scoff that was threatening to come out as he made a note in his planner to find more test subjects. It didn’t really matter to him how many people were willing or unwilling to submit and be a subject.

Humans were coming in droves for what the sanctuary was offering, and the majority were here because they had heard there was a cure. freewēbnoveℓ.com

The first time Adam and Eve had come to the naval base, Adam presented a cure for zombie-ism that he had created in the CDC labs. At first, Réne had been happy and hopeful. As both a soldier and a scientist, Adam knew how important it was to find a way to either prevent humans from becoming zombies or a way to change them back after they had. The original formula had been perfect for the first two months, transforming zombies back into humans...

But when the third month came around... there was yet another change—ninety percent of the Changed transformed into something that was neither human nor completely zombie.

Réne suppressed the shudder as he remembered the first pack of Zombies that had ravaged the lower levels of New Dawn. It was like they shared one mind, and the Alpha was in control of them all.

Adam had initially loved this idea. As long as you had control over the Alpha, you were fine. The only problem was that while the Alpha might pretend to be obedient, the first chance they got to wreak havoc, they took full advantage of it.

It took thirteen spirit power users to wipe the memory of the massacre from the inhabitants of New Dawn, and then Adam made sure that those spirit power users were also wiped off the face of the earth.

No one needed to remember those days.

However, the more Adam tweaked the formula, the more advanced the Z-packs became until, finally, the last batch that managed to escape simply disappeared into the shadows.

Charles Cook, Adam’s assistant, remained hopeful that things would improve, but Réne was no longer so sure. The odd adage of ’you have to crack a few eggs to make an omelet’ was starting to become old. As Charles pointed out, there were some who benefited from the cure, and Alicia was great about making sure that their stories were told to everyone both inside and outside of the walls.

"Whatever you need," replied Réne. After all these years, he had learned that it was better to just go with Adam than to argue with him. The man didn’t know the meaning of constructive criticism or bouncing ideas off others.

When he made a decision, he went balls to the wall for it, and anything in his path would be mowed down or eliminated.

And Adam was absolutely determined to be viewed as the savior of the human race.

When Adam was satisfied that Réne would provide him with what he needed, he changed the subject. "What about Bishop? Are the patrols still going well?"

"They are fine," replied Alicia with a wave of her hand. "According to Bishop, he has increased the patrols and added more for the marketplace and greenhouse. The people are worried that as more and more survivors come, their stuff might be stolen."
