Chapter 426: Worse Than High School

Luca entered the conference room silently, his concentration firmly on Alicia. It was like every time she was near, she was all that he could focus on. It was better when he was away; his head was clearer, and he wasn’t in nearly as much pain.

Watching Alicia sitting down at the head of the table, Luca’s eyes narrowed to see that Réne had sat down first. It had been a Cardinal rule back when they all shared a house that if Alicia stepped into a room, everyone had to stand up...

And heaven help anyone who had sat down before Alicia was completely comfortable. Réne would take his displeasure out on the next training day.

But now, Réne seemed to be completely different. Was Alicia right? Did he really want to kill her?

And why didn’t that seem to bother Luca all that much?

"What do you want?" sighed an older man across from Luca. "And what’s he doing here?" freёnovelkiss.com

"Yeah," continued a woman Luca couldn’t recognize. "Didn’t we try—"

"Luca is here because he wanted to take more of a leadership role in the community," interjected Alicia, the brittle smile on her face sharp enough to cut glass. "Unfortunately, he has lost his memory, so we are all going to have to be a bit more tolerant."

"Should we introduce ourselves?" smirked a younger man from the other end of the table. Seated at the foot, he didn’t seem to take anything too seriously. In fact, not only were his dirty boots up on the table, but he was leaning back in his chair, his hands folded in front of him. "Luca and I have always been close. I’m sure that he will remember me in no time at all."

The older man, Luca thought he had to be the younger one’s older brother because they looked so much alike, scoffed at that statement. "I’m pretty sure that Luca would be happy to run you through with his knife if given half a chance."

"Not my fault we have the same taste in women," smirked the younger man. "I’m Eric," he continued, turning his attention back to Luca. "We’ll get along great in the future. Like brothers... in a way."

Luca glanced over at Alicia from the corner of his eye just in time to see her press her lips together like she was trying to swallow her words. Was she involved with Eric, too? Was that what he was trying to say?

However, turning his full attention back to the younger man, Luca could see the scorn and disgust in his eyes every time he looked at Alicia.

"I’m sure," grunted Luca, cutting through the tension. "I’ll be sure to find you when I’m bored."

Eric tsked as he shook his head. "Don’t bother trying to find me. Just because you are bored, doesn’t mean that I will be. I have a kitten to charm, and she takes up all my time and attention."

Eric’s older brother slammed his hand on the table before pointing his finger at Eric. "I could always use a new test subject. Don’t press your luck. I’m Adam," stated the older man, his face completely impassive. "You won’t see me, and if you do, turn around and walk away. We won’t be friends, and I’m more likely to kill you than I am to talk to you. Understood?"

It was Luca’s turn to smirk. "Understood." It was interesting. Just what had he done to earn such hatred from a complete stranger? Unless Adam was interested in Alicia. Really, jealousy was the only reason he could think of, but even then, that didn’t make sense.

Was every guy in this room sleeping with Réne’s fiancée?

"I’m Eve," said one of the women. She was sitting beside Adam and gently placed her hand on his, where it was resting on the table. "I’m Adam’s wife. We’ve met a few times, but I think this is the first time we have ever really spoken. I’m so sorry to hear about your memory loss. If you need anything, come find me and I’ll be sure to help."

Well, that answered that question. If Eve was Adam’s wife, then had Luca gone after her? Was that the reason?

For fucks sake, this place was worse than any High School he had ever been to. If this was what was left of humanity, then they were doomed.

"Hear that?" demanded Adam. "If you need help, go to Eve. Leave the others alone."

"He knows," sneered Alicia.

"He has no memory, are you sure that he knows?" sneered Adam. "I am working on a formula to help with dementia, maybe it would help you, too."

Eric couldn’t help but laugh at that statement, but no one said anything else.

"I’m Sophia," smiled a soft-spoken woman beside Eve. "I’m in charge of education and everything involving children. I have one daughter, Libby."

Stiffly, Luca nodded his head even as his eyes narrowed in on Sophia’s face. For some reason, she was also rubbing him the wrong way, but for the life of him, he couldn’t figure out why. Was it because her softness made him break out in goosebumps, or was it something else?

With more questions than answers, he turned his attention to Réne to see if his friend could give him a clue about how to navigate these waters. However, his friend couldn’t have cared less about Luca. Instead, he was staring down Alicia.

"You called this meeting," he said, his eyebrows raised. "So, let’s get on with it. I’m sure that we all have better things to do than sit here."

Alicia’s smile dropped as she nodded her head. "As we all know, the human race is coming to an end. There are 15 times more men than there are women, and the birth rates have sharply declined."

"It’s a little hard to set the mood when you’re running for your life," sneered Eric as he stared up at the ceiling. "Candlelight dinners and roses aren’t the same when you are eating cold food out of a tin can that you have pried open with a utility knife. Clearly, Réne has been setting the bar on the ground if you think that sex is a priority to anyone, let alone the idea of having a baby."
