Be Careful What You Wish For: A Zombie Apocalypse-Chapter 428: Spoken Like A True Loser
Chapter 428: Spoken Like A True Loser
After Adam left, Sophia and Eve glanced at Alicia for a moment before coming to their feet and exiting the room.
"This is a slippery slope, ’Licia," sighed Réne as he pinched the bridge of his nose. "No one is going to want you in their bedrooms. Take a step back and think things through before you do anything that you can’t take back."
"You, too?" sneered Alicia, her face dropping as she glared at Réne. "When you and I started this base all those years ago, we agreed that we would do whatever was needed to help people and make sure that humans are the only ones left standing at the end of it all. Well guess what? The zombies are gone. They are no longer hunting us, and we are still stagnant. If this keeps up, nothing is going to change. This will be our new normal, and I don’t want that."
Looking down at her flat stomach, Alicia pressed her hand against it. "The only way forward is to bring about a new generation. The government did it after the Great Wars... how is this any different?"
Réne let out a long sigh. "The government didn’t force the issue. The soldiers returned home and were reunited with their wives and girlfriends. That was what brought about a population boom. Not forced breeding."
"Fuck," grunted Alicia, smacking her forehead. Réne, thinking that she had a change of heart, smiled gently at her. He never could stay mad at her for long. She was too precious to him.
"I forgot that I was going to tell everyone that they needed to provide genetic material to the labs. How else were we going to be able to keep track of the bloodlines? We can’t have two people too close to each other genetically to give birth to a child. That will taint everything."
Both Luca’s and Réne’s mouths dropped at that. "You want us to have a catalogue of everyone’s genetic code?"
"To prevent inbreeding and to pair people up for the most optimal offspring? Of course," shrugged Alicia as she stood up and quickly left the room. "We’ll choose people based on expected results. What was I thinking? Pulling names out of a hat?" Her voice could still be heard by the two men left alone in the conference room until the door to the stairway slammed shut.
"I think I heard a song about that," said Luca, his easygoing smile firmly on his face. "Something about being the side quest when they thought they were the main one? It seems familiar."
"What are you trying to say?" growled Réne, all civility gone from his face.
"I’m saying that you should take a firmer hand when it comes to your woman," replied Luca. "Then maybe we wouldn’t be in this situation."
"Excuse me?"
"I’m sorry," snickered Luca. "Was that too subtle? How about this... if you were able to please Alicia in bed, then she wouldn’t have to think of insane ways to get more men to pleasure her. You aren’t her one and only... are you really okay with that?" freewebnσvel.cøm
Réne’s jaw twitched as he clenched his teeth together. "Whatever makes Alicia happy, then I am happy."
Luca paused for a second, the other man’s words ringing in his ear. "I don’t have a problem with that," said Luca at last. "I have a problem when I am in the middle of it."
Spinning on his heels, needing to get out of the room, Luca left before Réne could say anything.
Finally alone, Réne fell into his chair and closed his eyes. "Whatever makes her happy makes me happy. Whatever makes her happy makes me happy. Whatever makes her happy makes me happy."
Maybe, just maybe, the more he said it, the more he would believe the words that were coming out of his mouth. After all, why couldn’t he be the only one needed to make her happy? Why wasn’t she satisfied?
He had given her his heart and soul. He had turned his back on his brothers to follow what she said. He had compromised every bottom line he ever had... and it still wasn’t enough for her.
"I wish..." he breathed out.
"What do you wish?" asked a quiet voice. Startled, Réne lunged forward to see a little girl sitting on the conference table in front of him, a lollypop in her mouth as she smile at him. "Finish your sentence, and I’ll make it come true. I’m better than candles on a birthday cake... I promise."
"You..." started Réne, his brows furrowed. She looked familiar, but for the life of him, he couldn’t remember where he had seen her from.
"Me," she agreed. "Luca does have a point, you know. You really should get a better grip on that leash of yours. If your bitch starts biting people she shouldn’t, neither one of you will know how you die."
"Is that a threat?" demanded Réne, coming to his feet. Pulling out his gun, he pointed it at the girl’s head. "Anyone who threatens Alicia will die. I won’t stand for her to be hurt."
"And yet, she doesn’t show the same consideration to you," replied the little girl, pulling the lollypop out of her mouth. "She even goes so far as to touch what isn’t hers. But I’ll deal with that later. He needs to figure out his own shit first. Now, about that wish?"
"I’d rather die," snarled Réne. Shifting his thumb, he released the safety and pressed the barrel against the tender flesh of the girl’s forehead. "Whatever I want, whatever I could possibly wish for, I will obtain with my own two hands. Things that come easily aren’t worth anything."
"Spoken like a true loser," nodded the girl sagely. "But given your choice in women, that’s understandable. But, if you don’t have a wish, then there are plenty of others that do. A word of advice?"
Réne didn’t bother to say anything, simply pulled the trigger. He had no idea how this girl appeared in his conference room or even who she was, but it didn’t matter. He didn’t believe in empty words.
He would kill whoever he needed to in order to make sure that Alicia’s visions and dreams came to life.
Looking at the body of the bleeding girl splayed out on the table, Réne snorted and replaced his gun. Walking out of the room, he made a note to get someone to come into the room and clean everything up.
