Chapter 445: Too Late

Even from this distance, Bishop could hear the screams coming from the Sanctuary below. It was the middle of the day, and yet, the outer walls were completely deserted. Whatever was happening inside had scared off even the most desperate.

"If you don’t hurry up, there is going to be nothing left for you," sighed Hattie as she appeared beside him. In her arms was a stuffed Teddy bear, and it took him a few minutes to remember the last time he had seen the toy.

Back when everything had made sense.

"You look tired," he said softly, stroking her hair. "You should get some sleep."

"That was the plan," she assured him, her eyes narrowed in a glare. "But the screaming won’t stop. I’m tired, Devil-damnit. I want sleep! Is that really too much to ask?"

Bishop couldn’t help but chuckle at the huff in her voice as she literally stomped her foot in protest. "No rest for the wicked," he said at last. ƒreewebɳovel.com

"I’m not wicked," she assured him. "I am a sweet little angel who just wants what is best."

"Best for who?" replied Bishop as he continued to stroke her head. Her hair was so soft and silky that he really couldn’t help himself.

"Now, isn’t that the question?" she smiled. "But seriously. The Sanctuary is going to fall. I have no idea where Alicia and Réne are, but if you aren’t fast, you won’t have time to light the match that destroys it all."

"I thought you said that I could take over the Sanctuary. I mean, that was part of my wish," murmured Bishop, his eyes narrowing at the building.

"Man proposes; God disposes," she hissed, batting his hand away. "I was all set to give you a completely functional Sanctuary. It’s not my fault that the bugs came and ruined everything. But hey! Look at it this way... now you can completely rebuild everything exactly how you want it to be. No longer will the shadow of your enemies be lurking in every building, no one will whisper about how much better it was with Réne or how they want Alicia back."

"I guess you have a point."

"I do," she said, her voice filled with confidence. "And more than that, I have a bed that is calling me. Go, do what you have to do, and then we’ll figure out what comes next."

With a snap of her fingers, she was gone, and Bishop was already in the center of the Sanctuary, looking at the situation.

"Bishop," grunted Pride with a stiff nod. As the First Deadly Sin, he wasn’t about to forgive anyone, let alone the man who had betrayed both him and his human meat sack. But whatever Hattie wanted, Hattie got.

"Dante," replied the man, just as stiffly. "She sent me here."

"I figured as much," grunted the demon before cocking his head to the side. "You’ve... changed."

"Understatement, but you’re not wrong. I gave up my wings for revenge," said Bishop, even as a woman ran past the group of me, screaming as two centipedes clung to her face and head.

"More than not being an angel," started Pride as he shook his head. "You’re a demon. One of mine at that."

Bishop’s eyes went wide as Sloth sent another burst of flames into the sewer, trying to kill the centipedes down there. "I can’t be a demon. I thought you were either one or the other."

"And then you turned human and accepted a demon seed," nodded Pride, his face twisting into a smile. Whether it was the human meat sacks or the demons, Bishop was under his control, and there was a certain level of poetry to that.

"Whatever," shrugged Bishop, not wanting to get into it. "Where is Réne? He and I have a few things to discuss."

"I’m guessing the tower?" interjected Eric. "I haven’t seen them come down, so I’d be willing to put money on the fact that shit is hitting the fan and they want nothing to do with it."

"It does sound like something they would do," grunted Bishop as he pulled a massive knife from a sheath behind his back. "But that’s fine. Creatures of habit are always easier to kill."

Spinning around, Bishop ignored the screaming humans and the armor plated bugs. They had their own fate, and it was up to them whether they lived or died today. All he had to worry about was four people.

Revenge was calling him with all the sweet allure of a siren, and Bishop was determined to answer its call.

"Where’s Adam?" asked Eve as she looked around Réne’s office. "Why isn’t he here?"

"No idea," shrugged Alicia as she lounged on the couch. The screaming coming from outside was enough to give her a headache, and she really didn’t want to deal with Eve on top of that. "He’s your husband. If you are that concerned about him, then I suggest you keep a better eye on him."

"She’s just worried," interjected Sophia softly as she clutched Libby to her. For her, it wasn’t the screaming that was scaring her... it was those moments of silence where there wasn’t even a single sound.

It was then that her mind played tricks on her, and she could hear clicks and scratching in the walls around her.

"I wish Bishop was here," whimpered Libby as she buried her head in her mother’s lap. "He would save us."

"Bishop was an angel," reminded Alicia. "And angels don’t belong here."

"Isn’t that what made him extra special? That he was an angel? He always made everything better," replied the soft voice of the innocent child. "Anyway, I want Bishop."

"Hush," shushed Sophia as she watched the look of rage starting to form on Alicia’s face. Being her friend was a lot like riding a tiger. It was always better to be on than off, but either way, you would never see death coming until it was too late.

She just hoped that it wasn’t too late.
