Chapter 450: So Much Worse

The entire conversation between Chang Xuefeng and Réne’s soul had been silent. No one outside of the two of them was even aware that anything was going on. Instead, it just looked like Chang Xuefeng was staring off into space.

However, the moment that the soul was reaped, the results were obvious to all. The now empty body slumped even more against Alicia before tipping to the side. The stench from his bowels and bladder relaxing was more than what Alicia could take...

Especially because it was seeping into her knees and legs from where they were pressed against Réne’s lower half.

It took everyone a moment before they realized what was going on, and as soon as it clicked, Alicia stood up, screaming. "I said that you couldn’t take him!" she screeched, pointing her finger at Chang Xuefeng. "You didn’t have permission to take him!"

"I wasn’t aware that I needed permission to do what I was created to do," sneered Chang Xuefeng, stepping away from the puddle growing around the dead body. Of course, he was lying through his teeth. If Hattie told him not to take the soul, nothing in this realm or the next could get him to go against her words.

If Hattie said east, he would never go west. It was simply not done.

"I loved him," Alicia continued, her eyes glassing over. She wasn’t even looking at the dead body of the man that she professed to love. "I saved him! This wasn’t how it was supposed to end! We were meant to live happily ever after. We were meant to bring about a new world. One where we were safe and happy."

"You have a funny way of showing your love," sneered Bishop, looking Alicia up and down. "How many men have you fucked behind his back? How often did you ignore what he said, or even ignored him? I think you loved the idea of him more than the actual person. Maybe you can ask him in your next life."

"Shut up!" Alicia shrieked, lifting her tear-streaked face. "You don’t know what it’s like to be powerless! To watch everything slip through your fingers while someone else takes your place!"

Pride cocked his head. "You mean like you did to everyone who ever stepped foot in your so-called Sanctuary? How many people did you kill? How many people did you force to do your will, either using your spirit powers or not? Hell, not even Sophia was spared when you kicked Bishop out of the fold. Just think of how different life would be if he was still on your side."

Sophia flinched even as she looked down at the floor. The man wasn’t wrong. Alicia was like a bulldozer, and most of the time, it was easier to go with her than against her. However, she wasn’t faultless either. It was entirely too tempting to give over all the power to Alicia and let her make the decisions.

Alicia staggered toward the center of the room as she looked at Chang Xuefeng and Pride. "I want to speak to her. To the Devil. I know you can hear me, Devil!" she shouted, eyes wild. "You owe me this. You have to listen!"

Pride scoffed as Chang Xuefeng burst out laughing. "The Devil’s taking a little nap right now," Pride said with a shake of his head. "She doesn’t have the time or the inclination to answer you. Why don’t I make things simpler and just tell you... no. Whatever it is that you want, whatever it is that you wish for, the answer is no."

"You have no right to say no to me," snarled Alicia, her eyes turning bright red as she let go of the leash, holding her emotions in check. Why did no one understand that what they saw was barely the tip of the iceberg? She had purposefully kept herself in check, not wanting to go overboard in case she pissed Réne off too much.

However, the future that she had spent two lifetimes planning had gone up in smoke in less than a minute, and there was no need to hold back anymore.

If Réne was dead, then she would find someone else to sit on the throne. Luca was still under her control. She didn’t believe that anything that happened in his apartment was the truth. It was probably something that the Devil had done... an illusion.

Right. Luca was Réne’s second in command. He was hers, everything was fine, everything could continue down the same path, just with Luca instead of Réne.

Taking in a deep breath, Alicia let it out slowly. "I demand to speak to the Devil. If she doesn’t want everyone that she loves to die, she will wake up from her nap and give me what I want."

Time itself seemed to stop in the office as Hattie appeared slowly, like smoke curling into shape from the shadows. Her dress was white, pristine, untouched by the blood and chaos she usually danced in and her eyes were unreadable.

"You’ve never had the right to ask me for anything," Hattie said simply, clearly pissed off. She still had sleep lines on her face from where she was forcefully woken up from her nap.

"And you are clueless if you think you stand a chance against me," replied Alicia, holding her head up like a queen. Walking forward until she was toe to toe with the smaller woman, she looked down on the Devil.

"You’re not God!" Alicia hissed. "You don’t have the final say about anything in this life or the next. In fact, in my last life, you never appeared even once. Maybe, just maybe, you are nothing more than a creature that should have died in her mother’s stomach."

"No," Hattie agreed. "I’m not God. I’m so much worse." Even though they were so close, Hattie didn’t back down at all. "You say that I wasn’t in your past life like I care. I am here now, and I am going to make sure that you don’t get a single thing that you want. And I warn you now, I am a petty, spiteful creature. I will make the last moments of your life absolutely miserable and then hunt you down in your next life and do it all over again."

With those parting words, Hattie vanished, leaving Alicia pale and trembling behind.
