Be Careful What You Wish For: A Zombie Apocalypse-Chapter 498: An End... And A Beginning
Chapter 498: An End... And A Beginning
Ever so slowly, the world around me seemed to have picked up the pace. Adam’s arms trembled around me, his blood soaking into the fabric of my dress as he dropped to his knees. The bullet had gone clean through his body, and I could feel the heat of it as it buried into my left shoulder.
Eve had a really crappy shot for a woman as old as she was. Even without Adam jumping in to save the day, she wouldn’t have been able to kill me.
As Adam went to the ground, he refused to let go of me. Dragging me to the floor with him, he stared into my eyes. "I won’t let you die in front of me," he rasped again, coughing up a mouthful of blood. "I won’t ever let you go."
See, if one of the guys had said that, I would think it was the most romantic thing I had ever heard. TO hear Adam saying it? I wanted to scrub my body with acid.
Context is everything.
Behind us, the gun clattered to the floor. Eve gasped, her hands flying to her face like she couldn’t quite believe what she’d done. "Adam—Adam, I didn’t mean to—I didn’t mean—" Her legs gave out, and she scrambled toward him, sobbing until she could barely breathe.
"Oh gods," she choked, reaching out to touch him, but not knowing where to touch without hurting him. "Stay with me. Please. I didn’t mean to hit you. I was aiming for her." She looked around the room for a moment, her eyes so glazed over that she couldn’t see anyone but Eric.
"Cain, help me. Your father is dying, you have to help me save him!" she begged, her arms now reaching out toward Eric like he was the answer to her prayers.
"He’s not dying," I said flatly, done with the drama. My blood was starting to mix with Adam’s, and that was making me break out in hives.
Eve froze, slowly turning to where I was practically hidden under her husband. "What?" she demanded, her eyes narrowing like I was lying or something just to comfort her.
Comfort her my ass. I needed someone to get him off of me.
"He’s not dying," I repeated, pushing against the lug with all my might. Tank, finally realizing that I wasn’t happy, rushed to my side and flung the injured man away. Coming to my feet, I brushed the dirt and bits of flesh off my skirt. There was nothing I could do about the blood.
"I really want to know," I started with a sigh, looking at Eve. "How have you managed to survive for millions of years and still be this dumb? He can’t die. Just like you can’t die, just like Eric can’t die. None of us can die. You would have had just as much luck killing me with a BB gun then you did with that 9mm."
Sure enough, even as I was speaking, Adam’s bleeding slowed, his color returned, and the hole in his chest closed with a faint hiss and shimmer of light. If the first man and woman could have died, they would have done it long ago.
Besides, with Adam’s winning personality, I was willing to put money on the fact that someone had to have been pissed off enough to kill him at least once.
Eve looked at me, then back at him, and back at me again—her face contorted in confusion and horror. "I-I don’t understand..." she muttered, shaking her head. "He said that if we were injured enough, we would be able to die."
"Well, then, apparently, a bullet to the heart was not enough. Maybe next time, try his head. If that doesn’t work, try multiple guns. I mean, there are a lot of creative ways to die, experiment... have fun. But not here."
Letting out a long sigh, I cracked my neck from side to side to try and relieve some of the tension in it. I really was done with the day. Tethering every last living creature in the western hemisphere really took a lot out of a girl.
Who knew?
"What?" demanded Eve, her eyes wide as she watched Adam stagger to his feet. "What do you mean? This is our home."
"It was your home," I agreed with a nod. "And now it’s not. I don’t have the ability to tether us together, and I refuse to allow anyone into my territory who doesn’t belong to me. So, find a door and fuck off."
Turning to Adam, I narrowed my eyes. He was staring at me like a man waking from a dream. His lips parted, but I held up a hand to stop him. "You and I were never a thing," I announced, not wanting to hear his voice. "Whoever you have built up in your head, she isn’t me. I am a needy bitch who needs at least three of my men around me at all given times. I am not strong; in fact, I enjoy acting like a child more than I enjoy acting like an adult. Nine times out of ten, I look for an adult who is more adult than I am. That’s where Daddy comes in."
Pointing at Chang Xuefeng as if to emphasize my point, I continued, "I refuse to add anyone more into my harem. Hell, even Eric was a surprise, but I guess we were married, so that does make a bit of sense." Looking over my shoulder, I smirked at the man, letting him know that I was just teasing him.
Kind of.
"I’m not yours," I enunciated slowly, so that he understood what I was saying. "I never was."
Snapping my fingers, the ground beneath Adam and Eve pulsed with a deep, echoing hum. I had no idea where I was sending them, but as long as it wasn’t in the Devil’s Playground, I was good.
"You don’t have to go home," I said one last time, voice calm, cold, final. "But you can’t stay here."
The air shattered around them, and they were gone, erased from the Devil’s Playground like they had never been part of it to begin with.
The room fell silent, and Eric let out a low whistle. "Well. That’s one way to clear the guest list," he muttered, looking at the spot he had last seen his parent.
"I’m tired of letting things rot," I shrugged, taking out a lollypop. "Time to start fresh."
