It was as if time had stopped.
Kendra’s voice hung in the air, suffocating. Avery stared at her, shocked to her bones. Not only did she just tell Cain that she was trying to break their bond, but she also revealed to everyone that they were mates, something Cain had wanted to keep secret.
’No one must know about this,’ he had told her, only for Kendra to expose it all publicly. Avery’s face turned pale, and she gulped hard. The room stood frozen, with warriors, servants, and everyone around standing still, all of them staring.
Cain didn’t move. Didn’t blink.
Avery’s breath was shaky, uneven. Her lips parted, and she shook her head slowly. "No, no, no," she muttered, unsure of what she was saying no to. Was it the fact that she wanted to break their bond or the fact that they were mates? Cain didn’t hear her, his eyes fixed on the woman who had just revealed it all.
Kendra.
Kendra looked around, her veins straining tightly against her skin. Her breath hitched the moment she saw the shocked faces of everyone around, and her lips curled into a smile. "Oh, was that a secret? Which one? The one where Alpha Cain is mated to a slave or the one where the slave is trying to break their bond? Which is the secret?" she screamed.
She turned her head, her furious gaze locking onto Avery. And then she spat the words back at her, louder, sharper, crueler. "WHAT? WANT ME TO REPEAT IT AGAIN BECAUSE I KNOW IT ALL. I KNOW EVERYTHING!"
Cain stiffened. His wolf bristled.
She was shaking now, her chest heaving as she took a step forward. "What now, Alpha? What will you do now? Now that you know that she is trying to break your bond. Now that she wants to reject you yet again. What will you do?" Kendra spat out.
Cain’s gaze narrowed darkly. "Tread carefully, Kendra," he drawled.
Kendra’s lips curled, her voice a blade dipped in poison. "What’s wrong, Alpha? You don’t like me saying it?" And then, she whispered—low, taunting, deadly. "You don’t want to hear it?"
The moment the words left her mouth, hell itself broke loose.
Cain moved.
Not a warning. Not a growl. Just pure, unfiltered rage.
His hand shot out, clamping around Kendra’s throat, and in a blink—SLAM.
The wall shook from the force of her body crashing against it.
A sharp gasp tore from her lips. Her feet dangled off the ground.
Cain’s grip was merciless. Cruel.
The courtyard was silent. So silent that if a pin dropped, it would be heard loud and clear. No one dared to move. No one dared to breathe.
His fingers tightened, and Kendra’s eyes went wide—fear, real fear, flickering through them for the first time.
"How dare you, Kendra. You’ve done it to the end now," Cain’s voice was low and deadly.
"I gave you more chances than you deserved. I let you go even after your countless mistakes, but this. This is it. I will not forgive your insolence any longer."
Cain’s grip tightened. His voice was like death itself. "If not for the fact that you have been with me for years," Cain murmured, his tone too calm, too wrong, "I would tear off your head from the rest of your body right here."
Her nails dug into his wrist, struggling, desperate. But it didn’t matter. Cain didn’t move. Didn’t flinch.
He was seconds away from crushing her throat.
One second.
Two.
Three—
And then, he let go.
Kendra collapsed to the floor like a ragdoll, coughing, gasping, choking. Her face red from how hard she was coughing.
Her fingers trembled as she touched her throat. Her breath hitched, her body shaking violently.
Cain didn’t spare a second glance. He turned around, his green eyes finding a grief-stricken looking Avery. Before she could react, he grabbed her hand.
Avery barely had time to process before he led her away, his grip firm. She stumbled slightly, struggling to keep up with his large pace, but she quickly caught up. Cain didn’t stop. Didn’t slow.
And behind them—
Kendra was still on the floor, her breath ragged. Her hands trembled. A single tear slipped from her eye, hitting the ground.
And then—she screamed.
The sound, so gut-wrenching, so animalistic, filled with gut-wrenching pain that even the birds perched on the trees flew away in terror.
Her body shook violently. Her fists clenched tightly, her nails digging into her palms, drawing blood, but she didn’t care. Her entire soul burned.

The door slammed shut behind Avery. She flinched slightly, standing behind the door, watching Cain pace around the room. He looked livid with rage. Avery hesitated slightly, not knowing what to do to diffuse the situation.
She stepped forward a bit, looking down nervously. "I’m sorry..." she began. "I-I didn’t mean for Kendra to-" she was cut off sharply.
Cain stopped right in front of her, his gaze intense on her. He knew she had been trying to break their bond, but hearing it aloud made it too real. It sent him spiraling.
Cain cupped her jaw, forcing her to look up at him. His green eyes on hers, unblinking. "Do you really want to break it? Our bond?"
Avery’s heart pounded hard in her chest, her lips parted slightly, but no word would come out. She wasn’t expecting that question. Not at all.
She stepped back, avoiding his gaze. "You didn’t want a mate either. You made it clear to me. Why does it matter?"
Cain exhaled sharply, his jaw tightening. Why does it matter?
Because it did. Because hearing Kendra scream it for the entire pack to know had made something inside him snap.
His fingers twitched at his sides, clenching and unclenching. Avery was trying to pull away, trying to distance herself, but Cain wasn’t having it.
He stepped forward, closing the space between them, cornering her against the door.
"It matters," he said, his voice low and hoarse.
Avery lifted her gaze, eyes flickering with uncertainty. "You don’t even like me. You hate me."
Cain scoffed. Like? What a ridiculous word.
His hands found her waist, firm, possessive. Avery gasped at the sudden contact, her fingers curling into fists.
"You think I hate you? That I don’t like you." Cain murmured, his voice dangerously soft. Too soft.
She sucked in a sharp breath, her gaze darting away for a brief second, and then she looked at him again. "You—"
Without any warning, he leaned closer and kissed her.
