Chapter 270: Playing matchmaker (2)

"What is it? You have been staring at me since we left the room. If you want to go back to your lady, I suggest you don’t. They are enjoying themselves now," Francesca said, knowing she wouldn’t see Selene for a while.

"I do not have anything to say. I have always left when I think those two want to be alone. You are quite bold. You pushed Lord Blackthorn inside the room. For as long as I have been here, I have not seen anyone do that," said Agnes.

"Why would he be against it when I just dressed up Selene to his liking? Lord Blackthorn scares me, but I have learned there are some moments when you can be daring, and he will not be angry," Francesca replied.

"Are those moments concerning my lady?" Agnes asked.

Francesca nodded her head. "They are. My husband and Lord Blackthorn get along, but I think Xavier has become closer now that I am friends with Selene. Don’t worry about me being friends to get closer to Xavier. I don’t want any kind of business with him."

"I believe that," Agnes said, not finding doubt in Francesca’s words. "I also know your husband might benefit from this."

Francesca laughed. "My husband has never used me to make a business relationship with anyone. The one time I played nice with someone I disliked was to keep my husband safe from the king. He wasn’t pleased with that, and he is far happier that I don’t speak with the queen."

"I am sorry if what I said offended you. I ask because I am worried about my lady. Being married to Lord Blackthorn brings new people who want to get close to her to get close to her husband," Agnes explained her reasoning.

"I am still getting used to her new status. Before this, there wasn’t anyone who visited with gifts. You have made her day quite fun, but I always worry. I am sorry," Agnes apologised.

"Don’t be. Now I understand why you looked so concerned at times. Selene has been through a lot, so I am certain she has faced many betrayals. You should keep an eye on anyone who claims to be her friend. You might notice something she doesn’t," Francesca replied, not offended by Agnes’s concerns.

Francesca looked to her right at Agnes. "You must hear a lot of gossip from the maids here, and if you go around the town on your days off, you might run into more maids to hear gossip from. Use that to know who is plotting against your lady."

"Have you ever learned of a threat targeting you this way?" Agnes inquired.

"Yes,’ Francesca nodded. "I learned of a plot to make it look like my husband was being unfaithful. All because I had no interest in spending my days speaking down on someone my peers deemed an outcast. Maids are quite useful because they hear everything."

"Thank you for the advice. Will you be staying for dinner? My lady already invited you and your husband to stay when he arrives to pick you up. I can arrange a room for you to use in the meantime," Agnes offered.

"That would be lovely. It looks like Lord Blackthorn has a guest. I have seen him before," Francesca said, trying to find the place where she saw the visitor.

"It is Isaac, and he is from the court," Agnes said. ƒгeewёbnovel.com

"Oh! That is where I know him from. I should say hello," Francesca said, walking toward Isaac. "It is good to see you again."

Isaac stood up, extending his hand out to Francesca. "It has been some time since I saw you. I have not seen Henry since I left the court."

"My husband no longer visits the court as well. You two have something in common to talk about, so you should meet. My husband left because of the king," Francesca shared.

"It is the same reason why I left. He made a wise decision to leave since the court is losing its purpose. I am getting too used to how no one meets with me now that I am no longer in the court. I find myself speaking to Lord Blackthorn the most, which is odd," Isaac said, now realising the change in his life.

"Don’t be so down about it. I think it is quite the blessing that you see who was using you for your position. Have you met Agnes?" Francesca asked, giving Agnes a little nudge forward.

Francesca could be wrong, but she noticed Isaac’s gaze going toward Agnes.

"I have met her a few times. Did the arrival of Lord Blackthorn remove you from your lady’s side?" Isaac asked.

"It did, but I welcome the break. Has anyone offered you anything to drink? I could also have food arranged for you," Agnes said, looking around for a passing maid.

Agnes wanted to take care of Francesca until Selene returned, so another maid would need to be with Isaac.

"Why don’t you take him to see what he can drink or eat? It would be good for him to stretch his legs. Isn’t that right, Isaac?" Francesca asked, hoping Isaac would catch on.

"It would be good," Isaac agreed. "I am already bored of sitting around, and I doubt Lord Blackthorn will be back soon now that he is with his wife. Or, are you too busy to take me?"

Francesca claimed Isaac’s seat as her own. "She is not busy since I will be right here. I do not require anything to drink or eat, but if you do find something that captures your eyes, be a dear and bring some of it for me. Still, take your time and speak."

Isaac looked down to hide his smile. He was well aware of what Francesca was doing and he enjoyed it. He was more helpful than Xavier.

"I will be back soon," Agnes promised Francesca. "This way," Agnes said to Isaac, leading the way to the kitchen. She hoped to run into Gertrude or Harold to pass Isaac onto one of them.

"Being the personal maid to Lady Blackthorn must be a stressful job. Each time I visit, you seem to be busy with a task. You are handling it well," Isaac complimented Agnes.

"It does get busy, but I enjoy my work. It is my way of paying her back for bringing me along with her. There are far more capable maids here to be at her side, but she never thought of abandoning me. At least I hope," Agnes added since she didn’t know what went on in Selene’s mind.

"That is a good reason to be so loyal to her. I am curious what it would take for me to steal her maid for the day," Isaac said, making his intentions clear.

"W-What?" Agnes stuttered, biting her tongue after the mistake.

"I am trying to court you, but I might be awful at it," Isaac confessed, fearing he did it wrong.
