Chapter 146: Meeting The Royal Family

Perhaps the ’display of love’ (which it definitely was not) was a bit too much for the prince to bear. The anger bubbled up within Isidor.

His jaw clenched, and he didn’t even bother to say another word. With a sharp turn of his heel, he stormed off, leaving the halls without a second glance.

His pride simply could not handle the humiliation. He decided then and there, he needed a new plan. One that would not only rid him of Darius once and for all but also force that Vaelis bastard to beg for forgiveness.

How dare he ignore me? He would make him pay!

Meanwhile, the said bastard was actually busy silently checking Darius’ mana as they continued walking forward hand in hand. Everything seemed under control

Although the amount of mana in Darius’ body was higher than before, it wasn’t necessarily a bad sign. His body needed more mana to recover. If Darius could start utilizing his own mana again, there would be no need for that locket, nor would he have to push his body to shrink in size.

The green mana, albeit pulsating with new energy, was still murky.

Was this the reason? Xion mused. Is this what’s making Darius uncomfortable?

He was so lost in his thoughts that he didn’t even notice when they passed through the palace halls, or how servant they walked by froze like statues.

Let alone the servants, even the aristocrats who were in the royal palace were staring at them with wide astonished eyes.

Their mouths dropped to the floor when they saw the infamous archduke holding someone’s hand!

They knew how the crown prince’s advisor had tried to touch the archduke just a few days ago, and the archduke’s knight, Sir Raymond, had directly cut that hand at the archduke’s order.

All of it had happened in the hall full of people and even his majesty was present.

And even when the crown prince tried to show his anger at the blatant disrespect shown to his people, and indirectly to him by the archduke, all he got was ridicule.

He was mocked by Darius Rael Darkhelm for keeping such dirty people by his side, who were openly lusting after their guests.

"Birds of the same feather flock together," His Grace had called the prince dirty as well. That too, was in front of the king who did nothing and only chided Isidor for not controlling his people properly.

All the living beings, despite their social ranking, who were present there witnessed the horrifying moment when a hand was thrown at the crown prince’s feet as if it were something filthy.

They all knew the devil archduke despised others even stepping too close to him let alone touch him, so it really was not a surprising outcome.

Yes, expected but chilling, nonetheless.

So now, when they saw the same archduke actually holding someone’s hand, and that too with a smile, there was only one thought in their mind.

Love makes people crazy, and if crazy people fall in love... they become even scarier.

"They look good together," one of the maids murmured to her mistress, Bianca Nocturne.

There were many such whispers, though most dared not voice them aloud, at least not within the palace walls.

But the Nocturne family was different.

Bianca, the only princess and legitimate daughter of Duke Nocturne, merely smiled to herself. After Klein’s sudden death, she had been pushed to secure a royal marriage to stabilize her family’s position.

That was the only reason she was there. But this? This was so unexpected.

Watching Xion and Darius, walk past without even sparing her a glance, a thought drifted into Bianca’s mind and slowly formed into something far more amusing.

Her Highness, Talia, will surely enjoy this news... won’t she?

Bianca Nocturne, someone who was supposed to marry the archduke was now reduced to be just a beautiful woman, someone whose only use was to charm royalty so her father could clean up Klein’s mess.

Well, Klein deserved to die. But...

Her bright ruby eyes shone under her thick red eyelashes.

She took a long sniff, following the faint scent of blood thrumming under Xion’s veins. freewebnσvel.cѳm

It smelled like fresh nectar, something that could only be collected by the mystical fairies of the forest, something that only existed in stories.

No wonder Klein lost control. If it was not for the fact that she had better control, and of course, a sane mind, she might have tried to have her hands on this fluffy baby as well.

Bianca turned around and decided to return to her mansion. As for her father’s orders to seduce the heir apparent.

But Isidor?

Bianca snorted softly to herself. Sure, the prince was handsome , and entertaining in a tragic, toddler-throwing-a-tantrum sort of way. But to sacrifice her life just to keep him calm, and be his father’s chess pawn? Absolutely not.

As she turned away, she could hear the slight whispers carried by the wind and floating to her ears.

The servants were actually blessing His Grace with a long life filled with love.

How amusing... she thought, nonetheless she agreed with them.

Because when they were about to be killed by those higher-level monsters and orcs, it was only His Grace who took the responsibility to kill them.

After destroying many dungeons, Darius even went to war and surprisingly won it.

As long as they ignored his hatred for their religion, the common people more or less looked up to the archduke.

She too wanted the devil archduke to fall in love and stay happy.

Only if the devil archduke fell in love and stayed happy... he’d stay far, far away from the capital, and from her. Because just like his father, she was also very scared of this devil!

Bianca left the palace much earlier than expected; however, Xion was not so lucky.

Or one might say, he was never lucky in this type of situation.

Just as they reached the main grand hall, they met with a guard who was supposed to announce their arrival.

And he did exactly that. The problem?

He called Xion Darius’ husband!

"The archduke of the north, Darius Rael Darkhelm, and his respected husband, His Grace Xion Darkhelm, are waiting for Your Majesty’s permission to enter."

Xion: "..." No, dude. Darius did not even speak yet. Where did you get the idea of me being married?

And worse? Darius just chuckled when he looked at Xion’s speechless face.

Xion directly yanked his hand away and snorted lightly. Bad Guy!

As the grand golden doors creaked open under the king’s command, Xion swallowed his frustration and silently followed Darius.

Anyway... it’s not like I can do anything. Right?

Deliberately taking a step aside to create a few inches of distance between them, Xion decided that it was safe now.

It was not like Darius would do something strange in front of the king.

So, with peace of mind, Xion glanced around the grand hall curiously and immediately regretted it.

The place looked like something straight out of an over-the-top fantasy anime.

Towering marble pillars stretched toward a domed ceiling painted with golden constellations, glittering so brightly that Xion half expected a narrator to start explaining the "ancient prophecy of the chosen hero."

Who made him watch too many isekai animes where the modern-day young man was chosen as a hero?

A grand crystal chandelier dangled above them, so massive that Xion was convinced it could double as the final boss in a dungeon raid.

If it fell? Game over. Instant respawn.

It was not the way how it all looked, rather, it was the realization that Xion, in fact, was not a powerful hero who could swing his sword and kill all the orcs in one fell swoop!

Unfair transmigrations gods!

The floor was polished to the point that he could see his own reflection, and damn, did he look like a tomato.

It was all Darius’ fault for not leaving his hand all the way and also calling him baby.

He narrowed his eyes at the taller man, running his mind to come up with a way to make the archduke taste his own medicine. Nonetheless, that was for latter.

For now though, he could only focus on the front where the huge throne was placed.

It was a massive structure of dark iron and gold, decorated with some twisted patterns that resembled the depiction of a dragon with a gigantic painting of a goddess on the wall behind.

From what Xion understood, it was like a Dragon being blessed by Goddess Myrthia. And in this world, Dragon meant the royal family.

On such a heavy place was seated an old man with ... no hair.

From the distance Xion was standing, he could not see his eyes, but they were definitely not gold. At least not as shiny as Nikolai’s.

Old age sure doesn’t forgive anyone...

Xion exhaled and bowed along with Darius just as Ray and Allen had taught him.

Well... whatever. I’m just here to cancel my stupid engagement with Nikolai and be on my way to... somewhere.
