Chapter 148: The Love Declaration

Unlike Xion who was trying hard not to swoon over the hot voice, the room fell deathly silent.

Even if they were laughing and congratulating, they all had their eyes fixed on the devil archduke.

His one action was enough to push the entire hall into freezing silence.

Every eye turned to His Grace, but Darius looked utterly calm, relaxed even.

For Xion, that quiet chuckle brought a strange comfort. Yet the rest of the room seemed to hear something far more dangerous in that sound.

The silence stretched, and the king’s face darkened.

"Do you find something funny?" His Majesty’s voice was devoid of his previous warmth, "Is the royal family a joke to you?"

Darius did not reply. Rather, he grabbed the hand which was still holding his fingers.

Tightening his hold on Xion’s hand, he brought it to his lips and gently dropped a kiss.

Due to his arm still slung over Xion’s shoulder, now the certain kitten was almost attached to Darius’s chest. A slight blush crept on his face. With all his will, Xion reciprocated the same way, putting his lips against Darius’ knuckles with a shy smile.

Xion had no clue that this single action would become a pivotal point in Archduke’s life.

Due to this kiss which was nothing but a way to save his future from falling into Nikolai’s hands, Xion opened a new door for Darius.

A way where Darius had never wished to dwell.

However, that was for later.

As of now, the stunned archduke masked his bafflement in a mere second.

Instead, it was the entire court who was stunned.

Had His Majesty not announced that this advisor was to wed Prince Nikolai?

Was the devil archduke finally openly opposing the royal family?

But... that also did not seem to be the case. Even if his grace wanted to defy his majesty he would have said so. What were these two doing? Kissing each other in broad daylight. So shameless!

Nonetheless, the glint in their eyes was shining even more brightly than before. If their assumptions were correct, the archduke had taken a liking to his advisor.

Yeah, even now they only assumed that it was a mere liking, something that would change in a few days, or a few months, until there was nothing worth keeping Xion closer.

So, in the end, who did the advisor like? Could it be that after the archduke knew about Xion and Prince Nikolai’s secret love affair, he got angry?

Ministers looked at each other, and when they noticed the same assumption in each other’s eyes, they nodded silently.

Now they were sure that the devil archduke was forcing his advisor to play along.

They all had seen Xion’s pale face earlier and even when his grace tried to pull Xion closer, the advisor was so stiff.

If Xion knew what they were thinking he might have applauded and then asked them to become a screenwriter.

What the heck was the love affair between him and Prince Nikolai? How ridiculous!

Good thing, he did not have a mind-reading skill, and now in the entire court only he was the one who was still calm and even had a shy smile on his face.

"Did you not hear it when the door guard announced it?" Darius tilted his head slightly toward Xion, closing the distance between their heads as if he just could not keep away from his advisor, making Xion’s cheek pink.

His Grace’s tone became even softer. "Xion is my husband. And I love him very much."

Boom!

Xion’s face turned crimson. The heat travelled from his face to his ears before even burning down his neck.

He instinctively curled his fingers, only to accidentally hold Darius’ hand tighter.

It was as if he was really declaring his love!

Taking a harsh gulp, Xion slid his hand down to his lap, letting Darius’ arm slung over his frame.

Keep calm Xion! Don’t let your heart jump out of your ribcage!

Torn between embarrassment and an urge to stay away from his grace, Xion lowered his gaze to his lap.

Couldn’t he have just said it normally? Did he really have to be so... dramatic?

But the effect was undeniable.

The ministers stared in stunned silence. None dared to speak. None dared to move.

"I know that guard had only told it you, your majesty, " Darius leaned back lazily while pulling Xion to his side as well. "But you should not just allow your nephew to steal my sweetheart."

Xion, already as red as a cooked shrimp, thought, ’...I better stay still.’

"This time I will consider it a joke but if there is a second time," Darius sighed. "I don’t mind painting my hands with the royal blood... again."

He had killed his own mother, the princess and sister of the current king. The naked warning was enough to boil His Majesty’s blood.

And yet there was nothing he could do!

Heck, he could not even accuse Darius of disrespecting the royal family, because everyone knew, the devil archduke only struck when awakened.

His Majesty’s crumpled face pleased Darius. In a good mood, he slowly stood up, and Xion’s poor shoulder was finally free from the cage.

Not for long though. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

Darius offered his hand to Xion, giving him a strong sense of déjà vu.

Almost in a daze, he placed his palm on the bigger one, standing with the help of the archduke.

"I will take my leave now, Your Majesty." Darius bowed lightly before leaving.

And this time, he directly picked Xion in his arms, "The halls are too long. Don’t want you to get tired, now do we? After all," Darius smirked as he bypassed the stunned ministers, "We have plenty of things to do tonight."

Even after a few minutes, the royal court was as silent as a graveyard.

It was clear in their wide eyes, they feared Darius much more than they feared their king.

And that fact alone set His Majesty’s face ablaze with rage.
