Chapter 40: Target Locked

The bully problem has been temporarily solved. Arin would not be bullied anytime soon.

Oliver was satisfied.

Stepping out of the abandoned building, he approached a nearby convenience store and bought a tub of ice cream.

’Now that I think about it, how long has it been since I ate one?’ Oliver looked at the giant tub with a smile.

’A tub of ice cream is better when shared with family.’ He thought.

Just holding the large container made him happy.

’I should run back home.’ Oliver thought and ran.

When he reached home, he saw his brother Arin walking up and down the pavement. He was biting his nail, gazing at the road.

The moment he saw Oliver, he released a relieved sigh and walked towards him.

"Here." He shoved the phone forward and handed it over.

"Hm." Oliver nodded and gave him the tub of ice cream.

Although Arin wanted to talk, he suppressed his curiosity and followed his brother into the house.

"Wait a minute, what reason did you have for coming late?" Suddenly, Oliver blocked Arin and asked. He was trying his best to speak softly so that their parents couldn’t hear him.

"Hm, I said I was playing Mech Sim and forgot the time,"

Mech Sim was a game that was popular these days. It was something all teens who had an interest in mech play.

The game requires neural-sync-enabled VR headsets. Forgetting the time while playing was an appropriate excuse. Oliver nodded.

"Where is your phone?"

"Charging it..."

"Okay."

Oliver and Arin entered the dining room. It was a small space attached to the kitchen.

"Mom, I am back," Oliver said when he saw his mother sitting near the dining table.

She turned around with a slightly sour expression.

First, it was her younger son; now even her older son came late. It was already way past the time they were supposed to eat dinner.

"Why did you have to go now to buy ice cream?" She asked while standing up and prepping the plates.

"I thought it would be nice." Oliver gave a vague reply while looking at Arin.

"I asked my brother..." Arin suddenly interjected and said.

"Hm! You are teaming up?" Their mother was amused.

Maya found it interesting that her son’s who usually avoided each other, were showing a sudden moment of unity.

"Ha ha. No. Not really." Oliver shook his head and quickly sat down.

Meanwhile, Arin, who was not used to lying, blushed and took a seat nearby.

A couple of seconds later, their father came from his room, and their dinner began. And just as quickly, it also ended.

However, Oliver was satisfied.

The next day, Oliver woke up and checked his phone.

There was a message from an unknown number.

"Boss, everything’s done. From now on, I will use this number to give you information about them." He read the message.

It was not difficult to know who the message was from.

The kid, Stephen, the bully who tormented Arin, seemed to have quickly gotten into his new role.

Oliver had given his phone number to the kid so that he could act as a spy.

"Ok." He typed and sent the message.

"Now, what should I do?" Oliver asked himself and sat up on the bed.

Truth be told, he knew exactly what he should do. But how can he do it without making a mess was what he was thinking.

For example, he could kill anyone related to the bullying incident. But he couldn’t do that in a civilized society where he had to be a participant.

What would his family and friends think about him if he did that?

He was not the villain he once was. He needs to find a way to evolve as required by the situation.

’I can’t commit mass murder and get caught.’ He muttered under his breath.

Getting caught was the problem.

Not killing.

Killing was okay as long as he was not caught.

’And if I get caught, I need plausible and compelling reasons to explain my drastic actions. I need justification.’

’With justification, everything was possible.’

He smiled, figuring out the next step he had to take.

’Finding a justification would be easy with the information I have.’

Oliver had investigated the people surrounding his brother’s death. He knew of their dark history and the illegal activities they were involved in.

It could be used as a weapon to strike down his enemies.

’First, I should target M-fresh, a mana beast meat distribution company.’

At the center of all his problems was M-Fresh and the family that owns it.

The son of the owner is the kid who ordered his brother to be bullied and later killed. The owner was the one who ordered his parents, who were investigating his brother’s death, to be killed.

He had enough reason to screw over the father and son duo.

’M-fresh is related to Indra and his illegal activities. Indra would be in his twenties right now. He would later become the acting leader of a world-famous hero guild called Nova Rift.’

’Nova Rift was one of the initial hero guilds that ventured into gates and explored Second Earth. They are powerful beyond words.’

Indra’s grandfather was one of the founders of Nova Rift. So, he has some sway over the guild even now.’

’Making them my enemy right now would be a mistake.’ Oliver contemplated.

’I should do something creative to take down M-fresh.’ Oliver said to himself.

Offending a lot of people initially would not help him at all. So, he had to be careful.

’Indra would be working with demons right now. His quick growth and so-called talent were related to his relationship with demons. He would certainly try his best to maintain that relationship.’

’M-fresh is one of his pawns that directly connects him to the demons.’

’First, he would not like M-fresh to disappear. Second, if it disappears, he will use all his powers to bury any information that connects him to it.’

’Last time, Indra knew of my existence after I took down M-fresh. Later, he used public opinion to twist the truth and turn me into a villain while hiding his and the company’s misdeeds.’

’At that time, I didn’t care about my image. But now, I still have my family. I can’t let the past repeat itself. So, I should also find a way to reveal their connection with demons.’ Oliver’s lips curled up.

It was getting interesting.

For some reason, he was excited.

’It’s like chess. I have to use more than one piece to chase down the king and pin him down at the end.’ His smile widened.

"Brother... Are you in there?" Suddenly, he heard a voice from outside his room.

It broke Oliver’s train of thought.

He quickly stood up and walked to the door.

It was Arin who called him.

Why was he calling him? Oliver opened the door.

"???" Rubbing away the dried tear crust near his eyes, Oliver gave a questioning look.

Arin looked concerned, and his eyes were bloodshot. He looked like he had a sleepless night.

"Brother, can we talk?"

There was some awkwardness between them.

Oliver and Arin rarely talked with each other in the past. Both had drastically different personalities and were not a match in any way.

"What?" Oliver asked while stepping out of the room.

"What happened yesterday? Wait a minute. Before answering that, are you really my brother? What happened to him? Who are you?" Arin shot questions at Oliver.

Oliver’s eyes lazily glanced away when he saw Arin staring at him.

"I am obviously me." He then gave a random answer while scratching his butt.

’Well, he looks like mine. The dead and unfocused eyes with no emotion. The disgusting action of slipping his hands into his trousers to scratch his ass while talking. All that points to him being my bro. But can I believe it?’ Arin gave a doubtful look.

’His slim body has bulked up during the military training. That’s reasonable. However, something feels different.’

Arin couldn’t put a finger on what that was.

"How can a person change so much?" He muttered under his breath.

"You need to prove it. What if a demon had possessed you?" He said.

Arin seemed to have thought a lot about it during the night, which was why he looked haggard.

"How can I prove that?" Oliver gave up trying to explain and walked to the bathroom.

"You need to." Arin jumped in front of him.

"Dumb ass, I am here after military training. Do you think they would allow a demon to complete military training?"

"No," Arin answered meekly.

"That’s it. And I know the folder where you..." Before Oliver could finish his words, Arin jumped into action and covered his mouth.

Oliver gave a blank stare and spat on his hand.

"Ehhh." Arin retreated while shaking away the saliva sticking to his palm.

"Do you believe me now?"

"Hm. How did you...?" Arin nodded and asked.

Oliver ignored that and said, "Then, hide it somewhere better. If you suddenly die and if someone suddenly comes across it. What will that someone think about you?" He spoke as if he were remembering something.

"Oh!" Arin blushed red and ran away to his room.

"He he..." Oliver smiled and walked to the bathroom.
