Echoes of Vengeance: The Sweet Wife's Perfect Revenge-Chapter 37: Buried
Chapter 37: Buried
The silence in the hospital hallway stretched past ten minutes. Ezra’s gaze flicked between the door and Alaric.
With Alaric’s hand at his throat, he had barely stopped the bloodthirsty man from storming out of the hospital. Ezra had seen Alaric cold, unreadable, and in control. But never this close to losing it.
He had said only one thing to stop Alaric, ’She needs you.’
Now, Ezra could only hope Alaric didn’t force Aveline into anything. He had advice but didn’t dare to speak it out.
Alaric turned to the door. His hand twitched. He was a breath away from breaking it open.
Then it opened.
She stood there. Looking calm, collected, cheeks tear-stained, and face flushed. She looked him straight in the eye, "Can I trust her?" She asked, her voice devoid of warmth.
Amelia: "..."
She was standing right there.
But Alaric understood exactly what Aveline meant. No one connected to Damien. Not even through money or manipulation could get to the doctor.
He gave a single and hard nod in response.
Damien wouldn’t touch anyone connected to the Lancasters so easily. This was the hospital owned by Lancasters. And if Damien dared to pull anything during her treatment, Alaric would skin him alive. No one would be able to stop him then.
"Call your sister." She said, voice still plain, "With a divorce lawyer."
Yes, she needed Giselle to rip Damien apart.
Now it wasn’t just about survival, it was vengeance.
Then her eyes settled on Amelia. Her tone softened, "Dr. Grey, I would like to understand the treatment process."
Amelia nodded gently and gestured inside.
Aveline’s expression gave nothing away, but Alaric saw it. That newfound determination. Venom disguised as poise.
He signaled Ezra to make the call, then followed them in.
He stood silently while Amelia explained everything.
"During initial care for the concussion, I noticed Burton’s line, the blue line on the gums." She said, handing over a report. "That led me to send your blood for a blood lead level test."
She gave Aveline the blood test reports, "Ms. Laurent, you’ve been exposed to lead continuously for 4–6 weeks. The dosage has increased recently, which triggered the fainting and metallic aftertaste. Without the increase, symptoms may not have appeared for 6–8 months."
Aveline clenched her jaw but said nothing.
Amelia pointed to the chart, "You weigh 99 pounds. I doubt you noticed the significant weight loss."
"Come to the point, Dr. Grey." Alaric hissed.
Amelia gave him a look. Without Aveline’s consent or her family’s consent, she had to do preliminary tests on Alaric’s pressure. She explained to avoid complications later.
Anyway, she focused back on Aveline, "The key for the treatment is stopping exposure to lead. And administering chelation therapy."
Then Amelia explained the methods of binding lead so it can be excreted from her body, the side effects of the therapy, and the supportive care required.
When Aveline, more importantly, Alaric understood, Amelia laid out the plan suitable for her condition.
"We’ll start with EDTA this week. IV, three sessions. We will monitor kidney function, urine, and blood lead levels. If all goes well, we’ll shift to oral DMSA therapy next week. It includes oral capsules. Dosage will vary in stages depending on your condition."
"Do I need to be hospitalized?" Aveline asked.
"No. You can come in on Wednesday and Friday for IV. Then return Monday for the next stage of medication."
"Hospitalize me today," Aveline said flatly.
Amelia hesitated as it was unnecessary, but Alaric cut in, "Done."
Amelia and Aveline: "..."
Amelia stood, adjusting her glasses, "Then we’ll begin the treatment then." She paused after a few steps, "One more thing, Ms. Laurent. You will lose essential minerals during treatment, calcium, magnesium. Apart from medication, food and hydration plays a major role. Would you like a nutritionist?"
Aveline was about to nod when Alaric answered, again, "I have one."
Amelia and Aveline: "..."
When Amelia left the room, Aveline stared at him in disbelief, "You aren’t my husband, CEO Lancaster." He was behaving like one.
Alaric paused and turned to her. His brow lifted, and his smirk was smooth, dangerously confident. "You’ll wish I were."
His deep voice carried certainty. For a second, it almost made her believe him.
Aveline: "..."
But she didn’t take his words seriously. It sounded like a taunt, a cruel contrast to the husband who had been quietly killing her.
Before she could plan Damien’s destruction, she needed clarity on where Alaric stood. "Why are you helping me?" Her voice was low but serious.
She hadn’t done anything for him. Yet, he was going out of his way to cater to her. And people like Alaric Lancaster didn’t do favors without reason.
He stared at her for a long moment. "Because we have a common enemy." He gave a dry chuckle.
Aveline didn’t even roll her eyes. "You don’t need me to deal with Damien." She countered.
He raised a brow. Walked closer, calm and calculated with slow precision, "No. But you need me to deal with your husband."
Her lips curled, slyly, "Then watch me ruin him and his lover."
The woman who just wanted to survive was gone. What sat before him now was dangerous—and he liked it.
Still, he pushed, "And you will help me find the thief."
She frowned. He still wasn’t taking her seriously. "You know enough to prevent it."
He stopped at her bedside, watching her shoulders stiffen and her frown deepen. "Then think, Sunshine... think." His voice dropped, silky but more lethal. "Why else would I be here?"
Aveline’s breath caught. This wasn’t just about Damien.
It was about... her.
And that terrified her more than anything Damien had ever done.
Her body turned cold.
Alaric leaned closer, his green eyes glinting dangerously, and his voice razor sharp, "You don’t get to walk into my world, spill half a story, and vanish. Aveline Laurent, I will protect you, even if I have to drag you out of hell. But if you’re lying... I’ll burn everything to the ground to find the truth."
A shiver ran down her spine. But her pulse steadied, breathing evened.
Maybe he wasn’t planning against her. Maybe he just wanted to know the complete truth.
Did he say he would protect her?
Good for her.
She tilted her head, her eyes sharpened, looking back into his, "Then stay close, Alaric Lancaster. I’m about to cause chaos."
