The blast was silent for a half-second, as if reality itself hesitated to comprehend what was happening. Then the wave of blood and force ripped through the intersection.

Ren's bracers activated instantly, a barrier of raw force appearing in front of them, catching the blast of blood and flesh.

Thorn was thrown backward, his body tumbling like a ragdoll until he hit the barrier in front of the group, slumping to the floor.

Ren extended the barrier into a dome as blood rained down from above. He gritted his teeth as the shockwave passed, the remnants of the girl spattering across the cobblestones.

After that, all that was left was silence.

"Thorn!" Ren called, dismounting off his horse. He dropped the dome, allowing the blood to fall in a circle around them as he sprinted to Thorn.

Thorn lay sprawled on his stomach, coughing violently. His face was pale, but he groaned, trying to sit up.

"I'm good." He rasped. "I'm... I'm good."

"Fucking hell." Ren swore as he saw what had saved Thorn. In the instant that he'd heard Ren's shout, the guard had covered himself in his cloak, the imbued fabric acting like a dome of its own and covering him from the blood.

Behind him, Elias and Lilith were alert, scanning the surroundings just in case.

Valen stepped forward, swords drawn. "What in the name of the gods was that?"

"The Red Plague." Ren said grimly, eyes dark. "That girl was a carrier. I've… read about the plague and the carriers shouldn't be intelligent enough to act like a child. She lured us here and exploded, trying to infect us."

He helped Thorn up, eyes scanning the bloodstained ground. "Thankfully, we're safe. The blood is supposed to be safe to touch right now. The infection dies after a few seconds without a fresh being, but I wouldn't take that chance. So, keep your hands to yourself."

"So this place..." Elias began.

"Dead." Ren confirmed. "Either infected or gone. We need to leave. Now."

As if on cue, a sound tore through the air. A high-pitched, inhuman screech that echoed across the rooftops and sent birds scattering from the trees. It was the kind of sound that didn't belong in the world of the living.

Then came more screeches, one after another, rising like a chorus of nightmares.

The village, once eerily quiet, burst into motion.

They came from the houses, from the shadows of alleyways, from beneath carts and within cellars. Red-eyed figures, their bodies bloated and twisted, charged toward the intersection from all directions.

"Zombies!" Elias shouted, already swinging his longsword into a charging corpse, cleaving it cleanly in half.

"No blood!" Ren barked. "Don't let a single drop touch you!"

The horses neighed, pushing together as the zombies surged towards them.

He dove into action, Freedom already in his hand. The sword shimmered with energy as he swung it in a horizontal arc, the force cleaving three infected in a single pass and sending them hurtling away, bloodlessly.

"Calm the horses." He said to Lilith who nodded, moving backwards to the horses. He didn't want her to use Soul Dominion. Not yet. Not now.

Thorn stumbled backward, barely catching his balance as a zombie lunged from the left. He ducked under the clawed swipe and drove his sword into the creature's neck, twisting as he pushed it off.

"We're surrounded!" He shouted. "They're everywhere!"

Ren growled. "Form a circle. Back-to-back!"

The group quickly shifted, tightening into a rough formation in the middle of the intersection. Zombies poured from every side. Their eyes glowed with the same deep red as the child's, their skin filled with blood like veins.

Valen slotted into place beside Elias as Thorn and Ren partnered up.

Ren stretched his hand out, putting up a barrier around them, the zombies snarling as they pounded madly on it.

The force of bodies pressed against the barrier, trying to break through.

Then, one of the zombie's exploded against the barrier, throwing others back. Then, the others began exploding one after the other.

Ren gritted his teeth as cracks ran through the barrier, pouring soul energy into it.

A crowd of zombies surged forward and Ren's eyes widened as they exploded. The sound of shattering glass filled the air and the barrier fell.

"Hold!" Ren yelled as the zombies fell upon them, cutting as much as he could with Freedom. He could teleport out but not with everybody at once. And he couldn't leave them to die. Not even Valen.

"How many are there?!" Elias grunted, slamming the hilt of his sword into a zombie's temple and kicking it away.

"Doesn't matter." Ren yelled back. "We hold. We hold and we survive."

Another screech split the air, louder this time.

From one of the buildings, a zombie leapt from a second-story window to the middle of the group, aiming for Lilith. Before Ren could blast it away, her hand came up, catching it midair by the throat. With a twist, she snapped its neck and flung it into the wall, the body crumpling without a bloodburst.

Thorn ducked low, his sword lengthening as it carved arcs through legs and spines, keeping the creatures grounded without risking infection. "Who taught these things how to ambush?"

"They're learning." Ren said through gritted teeth. He sidestepped a swipe, drove Freedom into the zombie's chest, and kicked it off without breaking stride. "That makes them more dangerous."

On the opposite side, Valen twisted past a lunging zombie, his swords cutting low to disable it, but not destroy it.

Elias anchored one side of the formation, his strength pushing back two zombies at once as he parried and slammed them into the stone road. One convulsed and exploded behind him, but Elias had already moved, avoiding the splash.

Then Thorn cried out. "Beside you, Valen!"

Valen turned, his swords streaking through the air, but he was a moment too slow. A zombie crashed into him from the side, tackling him out of formation. He hit the ground hard, sword flying from his hand.

"Valen!" Ren shouted.

Valen rolled to his knees, eyes wide, reaching for his blade, but another zombie lunged. He dodged again, only to stumble as a third caught his ankle and yanked.

He fell.

A screech above.

Ren looked up in horror.

One of the zombies leapt from a rooftop, body bloated and rippling.

"No!" Ren screamed, surging forward.

The zombie landed.

And exploded.
