Forced to Marry the Sickly Billionaire-Chapter 349: Legs Numb, Carry Me!
Chapter 349: Chapter 349: Legs Numb, Carry Me!
Serena Summers gazed downwards, her eyes fixated on the three cards.
"I think I know who sent these."
Ever since Lucas Shaw’s incident, she had stopped celebrating her birthday, but she received three gifts every year.
Each only had a brief note: "Happy Birthday."
The gifts were given with care.
"Could it be... the three brothers from the Summers Family?" Adrian Holt speculated, looking at the handmade night lamp in Serena’s hand.
With three gifts and Serena’s simple social connections, it was not hard to guess who they were from.
But he remembered that the three brothers hadn’t appeared at the banquet, so it seemed the Shaw Family never invited them.
Serena laughed bitterly, looked up at Adrian Holt and said, "Do you think I am heartless for not inviting my own brothers to my birthday?"
Truth be told, they hadn’t really caused her substantial harm; if anyone was to blame, it was Henry Summers and Jeanette Lane who had lost her.
By the time she returned to the Summers Family, there was no place for her anymore.
Some things, once spoiled, can never return to their previous state.
As soon as she returned to the Summers Family, the three brothers had already chosen between her and Grace Summers.
From that moment, they were no longer her family.
Even when meeting again, as long as they didn’t provoke her, she wouldn’t go out of her way to ask for anything.
Adrian Holt embraced Serena, his warm palm gently stroking her soft, black hair. "You did the right thing, they were the ones who abandoned you first."
Thinking of all the grievances Serena had endured before made his heart ache unbearably.
His little girl was beautiful, well-behaved, and sensible. Those people were blind, mistaking jewels for fish’s eyes.
"Do you really think I did the right thing?" Serena asked, surprised, looking up at him with slightly moist eyes.
"Yes, don’t bother with them, this is the retribution they deserve."
It took a while for Serena’s emotions to stabilize, before she wriggled out of Adrian Holt’s embrace.
"Let’s put these gifts up on the shelf." Even though she liked them, she wouldn’t use them.
"Okay." Adrian Holt came over to help and placed the three gifts in a corner.
By the time they finished unpacking the gifts, it was already past eleven at night.
Serena stood up from the floor, her legs suddenly weak, almost causing her to fall.
Adrian Holt, who had been watching her the whole time, quickly caught her. "What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"
"No, I’ve just been squatting too long, my legs are numb," Serena said, her cheeks slightly red, punching her legs with her fists.
Adrian Holt couldn’t help but laugh, "I told you earlier to put something down to sit on, but you didn’t listen."
"I just thought we could finish quickly and didn’t want to bother!"
Serena pouted and reached out her arms to Adrian Holt, "Carry me."
Adrian Holt bent down, one arm wrapping around Serena’s shoulders, the other sliding under her knees, and lifted her sideways into his arms.
When they returned to the bedroom, he remembered that he seemed to have forgotten to reply to M’s message.
He placed Serena on the bed, went back to the sofa, turned on his phone and saw several missed calls.
All from M.
M was a calm person; unless there was some complicated issue, he wouldn’t have called so urgently.
Thinking this, Adrian Holt’s expression darkened as he called back.
The call was quickly answered at the other end, the deep and rich voice mixed with concern, "Adrian, did something happen? Why are you answering the phone only now?"
This was the first time Adrian Holt heard words of concern from M, and he found it both amusing and warming.
"It’s nothing, just helping my wife unpack her birthday gifts."
His tone was low and calm, subtly mixed with a hint of showing off, as if afraid others wouldn’t know he was married.
Serena Summers heard this and looked up at him, letting out a helpless chuckle.
A weird silence fell on the other end of the phone, followed by a bout of coughing.
"Cough, cough, cough... Wife? You’re married? Who is it?"
Adrian Holt turned his head to look at the young girl leaning against the bed head, bored with her phone, his lips curling up slightly, "Yes, I’ve been married for a while."
"Adrian, marriage is a matter that should be taken seriously, otherwise, there will be big trouble later," M’s tone was full of concern.
Adrian Holt leaned back in the sofa, his slender and pale fingertips tapping lightly on the back of the couch, feeling very pleased.
Upon hearing this, he slightly raised his eyebrows, "What trouble could there be? I think everything is wonderful right now."
Another silence ensued from M.
"Are you in S City now? I’ll come over to see you immediately."
Adrian Holt, noticing the seriousness and heaviness in his tone, curiously asked, "Why? You don’t seem very happy to hear about my marriage?"
M not only saved his life but was also his business partner; over the past two years, one managed the company and the other carried out the operations, complementing each other flawlessly.
As far as Adrian Holt knew, M was not one to meddle in others’ affairs, never asking about his personal life before, but today was an anomaly.
In a top suite of a hotel in C country, M stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, his expression dark and unreadable.
His half-masked face reflected on the clear glass seemed somewhat eerie.
He moved his lips, unsure of what to say.
Adrian Holt knew his character and didn’t ask further, explaining instead, "You are right, the organization I was with indeed had issues, they altered my memory, and now I have returned to my original home."
After a pause, his lips formed a meaningful arc, "You must have known about this already, hadn’t you?"
Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been so surprised upon hearing the news of his marriage.
M tightened his grip on the phone and gave a low "Hmm" in response.
Indeed, he had known, from the first moment he met Adrian Holt, perhaps even earlier.
"So what are your plans now?" he asked.
Adrian Holt glanced at Serena Summers again, his lips curving slightly, "To get everything back on track."
If he had any doubts at the beginning, now he was completely certain: he was Lucas Shaw.
He liked his current life, where he didn’t need to fight with others for food or experience gunfire for missions.
Nor did he need to become a subject of someone else’s experiments.
His life now was calm and beautiful, something he never dared to dream of before.
M sighed, "Since you’ve made up your mind, I will settle the business abroad in a few days and prepare to return to the country."
"Good."
The business that Adrian Holt and M operated was mostly overseas and nearly all in M’s name.
Because members of the organization were not allowed personal assets, and if discovered by the organization, the consequences would be severe.
But he was never one to obey orders blindly.
A year and a half ago, when those who fancied themselves as medical experts confirmed they could not extract any useful elements from his blood, he made up his mind to break away from the organization.
Afterwards, he met M, and the two reached a collaborative agreement and began secretly establishing a company.
