Chapter 39: Dagger to the Heart
Seeing a door inside the colossal skeleton was unusual.
But neither of them questioned it.
"It's chilly here," Noa stated. "And quiet."
The room was dimly illuminated, adding a magical and mysterious feeling to the scene.
A faint smell of burning wood and heavy echoes caught Noa's attention.
He saw a small altar, waiting for sacrifices.
It had an ancient feeling, and the sharp scent of blood revealed a ritual yet to be completed.
Cold sweat coated Noa's back.
But his eyes flicked with excitement.
Instead of going back and retreating from the impending danger, Noa quickened his pace.
As he approached the echoing sounds, Arthur followed him behind, rapidly catching up to him.
"Is it really safe?" he asked, the grip on his sword never wavering.
Noa nodded.
'For me at least,' he thought, smiling.
They both took each step thoroughly, hiding their sounds.
However, it was impossible to escape the radar of the glorious demon king.
Suddenly, the darkness from the chamber dissipated as if it were afraid of something, leaving not even a single shadow behind.
The torch burned in a pale blue color.
It felt like they were heated with mana.
As soon as the light came to life and illuminated the space, the horror became visible as well.
Even the smell turned unbearable.
The damp or rotten flesh of the creature overlooked the altar and intruders before it.
Its huge legs crumbled the floor beneath.
Every step it took sent waves of shivers through Noa as he watched how the abomination gazed upon him.
No shadows were seen under its frame—scales glistered because of the bluish torchlight.
"What a cutie," Noa murmured.
Arthur wanted to dive his punch into his face, barely keeping his composure.
"There is no time for your jokes," he said, heart pounding in his throat.
Noa chuckled, his voice still steady and full of sarcasm.
"Do you even lift, bro?" he asked the demon king, shuddering before its great pressure. "You look like someone who lived in a gym, but the absence of the equipment tells me otherwise."
Hearing his ridiculous comments, Arthur almost facepalmed himself.
He readied his sword for the impact.
Noa saw no reaction.
Neither the demon king nor his companion enjoyed his lightheartedness, forcing him to lock in.
Then he heard intimidating breathing from the demon.
Observing the enemy he had to take down, Noa inspected it, and the colorless letters filled his vision.

Its level was 20 with the last possible rarity indicator.
But the system had punished it for some unknown reason.
As a result, the demon was weakened and left with the task of protecting this ancient area, while countless researchers tried to study this place.
But half a century was nowhere near enough for humans to understand what kind of secrets the Abyss was hiding.
The demon didn't allow them to exchange glances.
It simply roared for a second.
Then it disappeared from its previous place, swinging its muscular legs at Arthur.
'Did that shitface ignore me?' Noa thought, dejected.
As for Arthur, he had been ready for the attack for quite some time, and guessing that blocking meant sacrificing his hands, he jumped out of the way.
Thankfully, his reaction time was enough.
And he successfully escaped from the deadly muscles.
Twitching his eyes in annoyance, Noa intended to smash the rod by smacking the demon king.
But he knew it wouldn't work.
Rather than attacking the monster, Noa had to employ something entirely different.
There had been only one person in the world who could abuse this tactic, and it was none other than the protagonist.
The bloodied, almost extinguished altar fed the demon king with unlimited energy.
As long as it worked, no amount of damage could exhaust the abomination.
Arthur had used his randomly attained affinity and transferred the energy source.
But it wasn't a game anymore.
And Arthur couldn't attain the affinity, stripping him of a chance to defeat the foe before him.
Fortunately, Noa could do it with his blessing.
The Doom god graced him, bestowing death affinity.
'Velrox has a new protagonist,' Noa mused, thanking heavens for his infinite rizz.
"Sorry to break it to you, but you need to be the bait. Hold it as long as you can?" he shouted at Arthur, leaving the demon king for him to handle.
"What do you mean?" the boy shouted as he dodged attacks in quick succession.

Noa didn't answer his pleading, too occupied with his duty.
He swiftly neared the altar, and covering his body with necrotic energy, he exhausted the corpses he still had.
It wasn't enough.
Noa's fuel was running out, and the demon's flowing energy didn't even budge.
He needed more.
Even more potent power than the corpses could provide.
"Fuck! I hate doing it," he mumbled.
Bones formed the altar as they linked together, creating a coffin-like bed for Noa to lie on.
"How convenient," he said after seeing the short dagger appearing on the floor.
As Noa touched the icy surface of the table, the rough edges of bones hurt his skin, almost piercing his flesh.
Fighting through the pain, Noa gritted his teeth.
Somewhere on his left or maybe on his right, the rumbling echoes rolled through the chamber.
It described Arthur's suffering as his hushed swearing reached Noa's ears.
Pinning his body down, Noa felt how much the pressure assaulted his entire being, trying to keep him away.
Hot and loud panic surfaced in his mind.
'It's not mine,' Noa declared, rejecting the emotions he couldn't control.
Yet the foreign energy didn't give up, taking his breath and strength away, leaving him with a brief moment to act.
'Oh shit. Here we go again,' he thought, raising the dagger.
Then he shouted.
"I need ten seconds. No matter what happens, don't look, or we are fucked!"
Arthur felt his resolve.
In truth, it was only for Noa, but the danger heightened their emotions.
With no moments to spare, Noa smiled like a lunatic, bringing the dagger to his heart.
