Chapter 236: I’m Not a Sack of Rice

[Ruediger: Arrived. Take your time]

Lariette smiled upon reading the new message from Ruediger. She had just returned from the restroom when she noticed the text.

Feeling a little refreshed after washing her face, she was ready to go back. Still, sleepiness clung to her, urging her to quickly look for her bed and pillow once she arrived home.

The school hours ended officially for today. Students started leaving their classrooms, swinging their backpacks while chatting with their friends. A few had already reached the school gates.

Lariette ran her fingers through her hair, attempting to smooth it down. Using her other hand, she sent Ruediger a quick reply.

[Lariette: Gimme ten minutes]

After making sure everything necessary was inside her backpack, Lariette got ready to leave the language faculty room. The place remained empty, but her colleagues’ belongings were there.

Lariette stopped at the doorway and glanced behind her shoulder. She still couldn’t shake off the strange feelings she experienced when she was half-awake earlier.

’Nah, don’t overthink. Lack of sleep makes people imagine things.’

Shaking her head, Lariette stepped out of the room. She closed the door behind her. There was no need to lock it because the guard on duty would do it later in the evening.

"Miss Elsher, are you going home now?" free𝑤ebnovel.com

"Ah! Mr. Eastwood."

Lariette halted in her tracks when she crossed paths with Mr. Eastwood who had just appeared on the staircase. The middle-aged man carried a few books and shouldered a messenger bag, seemingly had just returned from his last lesson.

"Yes, I’m going home," Lariette smiled, she answered politely, "I took some rest in our faculty room. No one’s there. Seems like everyone was busy except me."

Mr. Eastwood chuckled, "It’s good to get some rest whenever we can. Anyway, I won’t keep you here. See you tomorrow, Miss Elsher."

"Yes. See you tomorrow."

Lariette slightly nodded at Mr. Eastwood before walking down the staircase. Her desire to get home as quickly as possible and throw herself on the bed kept growing.

"Going home already?"

"See you tomorrow, Lari."

"Miss Elsher, bye bye~"

As she walked down the staircases, Lariette encountered her colleagues and students. She saw Nora from afar, who had also just returned from her last class. They exchanged a hand wave before parting ways.

The afternoon sunlight was scorching hot, but the gentle breeze made the heat bearable. It would be much colder the deeper they were in the autumn season.

Lariette recalled the few days of light rain in the past weeks, which only lasted for a short time. The weather forecast reported no torrential rain in the near future.

’Luckily, it won’t rain this weekend. I hope so.’

Lariette kept tabs on the weather reports more frequently as of late. She looked forward to her and Ruediger’s trip to the theme park, thus she hoped for sunny days ahead. Hopefully, Mother Nature wouldn’t sudden change her mind and cast rain to Earth instead.

"...he came with his truck?"

Lariette unconsciously paused her steps once she saw the familiar navy blue truck parked at the curb alongside the waiting parents’ cars.

Blinking, she thought she saw it wrongly, but it was not.

The mid-day sun cast a golden sheen over Ruediger’s truck. Its polished surface gleamed, reflecting the swaying branches of the trees lining the sidewalk.

Lariette quickened her pace, seeing Ruediger standing while leaning against the truck outside. Chuckles slipped out of her lips once their eyes met.

"Lettie."

Ruediger waved at Lariette, his voice soft instead of calling her out loud. The breeze gently ruffled his wavy crimson locks. The emerald eyes under the fringes were gentle.

"Why did you come with your truck?" Lariette asked in intrigue once she stood before Ruediger, "Were you on an errand?"

The few times Ruediger picked Lariette up with his truck, instead of walking on foot, were when he was on his way back from other places.

"Didn’t you say you’re sleepy?" Ruediger chuckled. He raised one brow, "I’m just afraid a certain someone will fall asleep when walking, so I drove."

"What? Haha! I won’t do that! You’re the one who fell asleep while walking."

Flustered by Ruediger’s remarks, Lariette laughed in the next moment. She playfully smacked his arm, eliciting more giggles from him.

"Get inside," Ruediger gestured at the truck, "Time to go home."

"Yes~"

Lariette quickly climbed inside the truck. Exhaling a sigh, she actually liked the idea of going home without the need to walk all the way to the apartment.

If the traffic was congested, they might take a longer time to reach Lumina Spring but she didn’t mind. It rarely happened anyway.

"I dropped by the cafe from this morning," said Ruediger as he pulled away from the curb, carefully joining the other vehicles on the road, "I got some bread from there. We can have it with the soup."

"That sounds nice. Their bread looked so fluffy when I saw it this morning," Lariette nodded in approval, her eyes half-open. She leaned comfortably in her seat.

Ruediger glanced at Lariette, finding how sleepy she was. Stifling his laughter, he resumed driving quietly. Only the soft melody played by the radio resonated in the truck, audible above their breathing.

Once they arrived at the basement parking lot, Lariette mustered up all her energy to walk to her apartment unit. She shot Ruediger a glare when the man joked about carrying her like a sack of rice.

"I’m not a sack," Lariette grumbled, narrowing her eyes as she stared at Ruediger.

"Are you sure you’re not?"

Ruediger arched his brows, earning a hiss from Lariette. He couldn’t help but think of a grumpy cat when annoying people tried to pet it.

Lariette huffed. She quickened her pace, trying to walk ahead of Ruediger. Unfortunately, his much longer legs made it easier for him to catch up to her.

"Haa... I’m so sleepy."

Lariette exhaled in relief once she stepped inside the apartment. She threw herself on the couch in the living room.

Ruediger smiled at Lariette, eyeing her with a helpless gaze. Getting a glass of cold water from the kitchen, he brought it to her.

"Here, drink some water. You should take a nap before dinner."

Lariette took the glass from Ruediger, murmuring her thanks. After drinking half of the water, she said, "I need to tough it up, lest I can’t sleep tonight because I slept so much today."

Sitting on the empty seat beside Lariette, Ruediger teased her, "Hehe, do you think you can do it?"

Lariette narrowed her eyes, she twitched her nose, "...I doubt myself."

"Hahaha!"

Ruediger’s laughter rang out, playful and unrestrained. Lariette hadn’t heard it since yesterday’s heated encounter with Chairman Alvord. Smiling, she quietly watched him.

The sun bathed Ruediger in a golden glow, highlighting the sharp angles of his face as his features softened. His crimson locks caught the breeze, tousled yet charming.

’I’m glad.’

A soft smile spread on Lariette’s lips. She was relieved to see the lingering tension from Ruediger seemed to melt away.

Holding the glass tightly in her hands, she silently wished he wouldn’t ever be hurt by that man again.
