Chapter 238: I Like Dragons Better Than Unicorns

The morning sky was still a soft shade of pink and violet when Ruediger drove down the road, leading to WonderWhirl Park. Lariette sat beside him, humming along to the music played by the radio.

The digital clock displayed a quarter before eight. Unlike during the morning rush of the weekdays, the expressways were not congested with vehicles.

Turning around, Lariette stared at Ruediger’s side profile. He was dressed casually in a beige long-sleeved shirt, worn over a coffee-colored round-neck T-shirt.

Ruediger opted for a dark-wash jeans and a pair of comfortable sneakers. Like Lariette, he also brought spare clothes, just in case he needed to change.

"Eddy."

"Yes?"

Ruediger glanced at Lariette, smiling at him. She didn’t show any signs of being sleepy at all despite the early hours in the weekend. He returned his focus to the road ahead.

Raising her brows, Lariette asked with a grin, "Can you sing? I haven’t heard Mr. Dreamer’s live performance since that time in Moonville[01]."

Flustered by Lariette’s sudden request, once again Ruediger looked at her, "...you want me to sing?"

"If you can," Lariette chuckled. Tilting her head, she smiled cheekily at Ruediger, "For some reason, Mr. Dreamer’s channel has been so quiet. I wonder when he’ll release a new cover."

"..."

A flustered Ruediger silently drove the truck while Lariette laughed by her side. He couldn’t deny that he hadn’t uploaded any new cover as of late.

"Well... I plan to go to the studio, but I have no free time yet," said Ruediger after a period of silence, "Maybe next week or the other one. Wanna join me?"

"Of course! You’ve invited me before[02]," Lariette covered her mouth, still laughing, "I’m waiting for that day, you know.

"Hehe, sorry," Ruediger chuckled, feeling a little awkward, "I might not look like one, but I’m a busy office worker too, you know?"

"Hahaha! I know~"

Ruediger coughed awkwardly. Suddenly he was reminded of the big expose he instructed Edmund to do this Monday.

For sure, the journalists would have a field day.

Lariette and Ruediger arrived at the theme park around eight-ten in the morning. The golden gates of WonderWhirl Park, with colorful accents, stood tall before them.

The amusement park was still closed, but a row of stalls outside was already buzzing with activities. They saw several people there, most likely the visitors who waited for the gates to be opened.

"Let’s get some breakfast," Ruediger said while unbuckling his seatbelt. Lariette quickly agreed.

After getting some warm pastries and hot drinks at a cozy cafe stand, Lariette and Ruediger enjoyed their breakfast at one of the vacant benches. They watched the visitors loiter outside the theme park.

"I think I’ll get you a unicorn hat," Lariette told Ruediger after swallowing the last bite, "It’s better be sparkly."

"...can’t it be dragon?" Ruediger laughed dryly, "I like dragons better than unicorns."

"Do you mean, a sparkly dragon hat?" Lariette arched her brows. She burst out laughing when Ruediger made a face.

By eight-thirty, the gates opened. Lariette and Ruediger walked through the VIP lane as they stepped into the magical world of the amusement park.

"Eddy! Here!"

"W-wait!"

Lariette grabbed Ruediger’s wrist, excitedly pulling him to one of the souvenir shops. His eyes briefly landed on her hand that was holding his. The way she naturally acted cast a soft smile on his lips.

Once Lariette and Ruediger entered the store, a burst of pastel colors, twinkling lights and racks of whimsical merchandise welcomed them. The air smelled sweet, something like a mix of vanilla and cotton candy.

"Eddy! This way!"

Lariette immediately rushed to the shelves displaying an array of adorable and quirky hats. Her eyes sparkling, she reached for a fluffy bunny-ear hat in the color soft pink.

"What do you think?"

In a merry mood, Lariette placed the hat on her head. She playfully wiggled the long ears that flopped to her shoulders.

Tapping his chin, Ruediger narrowed his eyes as if he was thinking about something seriously. In a somber tone, he said, "That tall witch hat suits you better. I can spot you from afar."

Widening her eyes, Lariette retorted, "I’m not that short!"

Ruediger laughed, knowing he had successfully annoyed Lariette. Under her cute glare, he took a dragon hat in the color blue.

"Matches my truck, see?"

"Yeah, yeah."

After paying for the hats, Lariette followed Ruediger closely. He planned their itinerary beforehand, trying not to get overwhelmed or lost in this massive park.

"Let’s start from here. We’re in the southern section, actually," said Ruediger as he checked the app developed by the theme park, "Oh ya, I’ve booked a cabin for us. We can take a rest there later."

"That’s a good plan," Lariette nodded, approving Ruediger’s sense of consideration. She had experienced first-hand how tiring playing the rides non-stop was.

Their first ride was the Cotton Candy Twister. The spinning teacup-style ride was shaped into giant cotton candy clouds instead of the classic teacups.

"Our hats will fly if we still wear them, right?"

Ruediger chuckled at Lariette’s question. He took off his dragon hat, "I think so. Give me yours. Let me keep it."

Lariette quickly handed Ruediger her bunny hat. He put both hats inside his small backpack.

More visitors joined Lariette and Ruediger, sitting in the other cotton candy clouds. As the ride began, their seats were gently lifted and tilted at a playful angle.

"Lettie! Hahaha! You’re too fast!"

Ruediger laughed out loud when Lariette spun the steering wheel faster. Throwing a cheeky look at him, she ignored the man. The world around them became a blur of colors.

The ride eventually slowed. Dizzy and breathless, Lariette giggled as she clung to Ruediger’s arm as they left the cotton candy cloud, trying to balance herself.

"Hehehe~ Wasn’t that fun, Eddy?"

Ruediger smiled in helplessness. He held Lariette by her shoulders, afraid she would have a misstep when she was this woozy.

"It was fun, but," Ruediger laughed again, "Lettie, you’re really something. Did you know that?"

"Hahaha! Let’s go! To another ride! Come! Come!"

"L-Lettie!"

Exhilarated, Lariette struck one fist into the air. Before Ruediger could react, she began pulling him alongside her, heading to another ride. Their figures quickly disappeared among the crowds.
