Chapter 142: Elder Trouble

"I have a pretty view in front of me now..."

Ronan paused for a heartbeat, lifting his eyes again—just long enough to give Riven a look that fell somewhere between amusement and exasperation. It was the kind of look that said you’re ridiculous, but also I like it.

Then, without a word, he went back to work, his pen gliding across the page in swift, efficient strokes.

Riven didn’t mind the silence. He settled deeper into the cushions, his tail slowly starting to wag with a rhythmic swish-swish that thudded softly against the edge of the couch. He wasn’t even aware of it at first. It just moved on its own, like his body couldn’t contain the contentment bubbling inside him.

There was something soothing about being here. Even if Ronan wasn’t paying him full attention, his presence was enough. Warm, solid, grounding.

He watched the way Ronan’s brow furrowed slightly as he read, the way his fingers seemed to move on their own, and the occasional sigh he let out when a line of text annoyed him. Riven could sit like this forever.

Even if he didn’t say it out loud, just being near Ronan like this was enough to make his day better. To think he just topped him a few hours ago!

Riven continued wagging his tail lazily, eyes following Ronan like a bored housecat waiting for attention. He even went so far as to yawn loudly, making sure Ronan noticed.

One of the cons of being with powerful men is that they are very busy.

Ronan didn’t look up from his papers, but his voice held a note of resignation. "Are you going to stay here, staring at me?"

Riven smirked, stretching out on the sofa like he owned the place—which, technically, he half did now. "Can’t help it. You’re so pretty when you’re serious. I’m just enjoying the view."

Ronan shook his head. Riven seemed to be able to say these things so easily. It was something he liked about him.

Ronan paused, a faint sigh leaving his lips as he leaned back in his chair. "You know I’m trying to work."

"You know I’m trying not to die of boredom. Troy forced me to come back," Riven shot back cheekily.

"Hah... So he did. That’s just him being paranoid. You can walk within the estate. I know that I still strike fear into the hearts of those who dare to entertain thoughts about hurting you." Ronan’s eyes narrowed.

Troy had been convinced that there were spies and that they needed to eliminate them. Ronan, on the other hand, was not convinced. Yes, he would need to deal with the elders before letting Riven roam freely within their territory, but within the estate, it should be fine.

Ronan’s eyes scanned the document again, trying to focus, but the twitch in his lips betrayed him. Finally, he gave in with a defeated sigh and stood up. Riven perked up immediately.

Without a word, Ronan walked over and plucked Riven off the sofa like he weighed nothing. Riven let out a surprised "oof!" as he was lifted and pulled into Ronan’s lap when the man sat down again. His arms wrapped around Riven’s waist, holding him in place.

"There," Ronan muttered. "Now we both get what we want. You get attention. I get to work."

Riven chuckled, snuggling back into the warmth of Ronan’s chest. "You secretly love this, don’t you?"

"I’d love it more if you stayed still. Otherwise, I don’t think you can bear it. I won’t be holding back if you provoke me."

Oh? They were back to playful banter.

As Ronan tried to resume his work with Riven perched in his lap like a smug, oversized cat, the door opened with a quiet knock that was completely ignored by both of them.

One of the senior knights, a tall, silver-haired man named Kael, stepped inside. His eyes narrowed slightly at the sight before him. "Apologies, Master. I didn’t realise you were... occupied."

Riven looked over his shoulder, still lounging comfortably in Ronan’s arms, and gave the knight a wink. Riven was going to get up, but he caught onto the fact that the knight seemed displeased with his position, so he rubbed against Ronan harder.

"An elder refused to leave, he remained seated in the hall, and we left him there, thinking he would give in and forget the matter, but he is still here and making things difficult for us." He looked right at Riven as he said that.

Riven being the Alpha’s mate was news that was not out yet. So to everyone else, Riven was simply a mistress. A male omega that Alphas sometimes take in to fulfil their needs.

Ronan groaned softly, pressing a hand to his forehead. He was contemplating what to do with the elders. He decided not to go out of his way to accommodate them anymore, but what was the line? What if they had something important to say, or had good ideas?

To replace these elders, he had started training other noble heirs in the first place. To observe them and recruit them. The internal conflict, not to be like the previous Alphas was a weight he still carried.

Riven seemed to feel a little bit of what Ronan was feeling. So he curiously looked at Ronan, his ears twitching with delight as he advised, "Just kick him out."

In his opinion, it was great advice!

"I’m afraid people who aren’t involved in this shouldn’t speak," Kael warned. He had been working with Ronan for years, he knew him better than some random omega who thought he could insert himself into these matters.

Before Ronan could say anything, Riven stood up, tail flicking behind him, and turned to face the knight properly. "I appreciate the concern, but you were involved in the matter, and you couldn’t even solve it. You came running to him like a little child. Are we really troubling the alpha with such trivial matters? Why are we letting some elder call the shots? Ronan is the Alpha, he is the leader. The ONLY leader. And he made his stance clear. Kick them out."
