Chapter 155: Special Hideout

After Eli left, Riven quickly made his way back to his room, careful not to make too much noise as he tiptoed across the hallways. The moment he pushed open the door, the familiar sight of Ronan sleeping heavily on the bed made him grin.

Without hesitation, Riven padded across the room and dove back into the warm sheets, wriggling his way until he was pressed snugly against Ronan’s side.

Ronan’s eyebrows were furrowed, his face twisted in a slight frown even in sleep. Maybe he was having a nightmare.

Riven tilted his head and studied him for a moment, feeling an odd flutter in his chest. Then, slowly, carefully, he lifted his hand and traced a gentle line along Ronan’s furrowed eyebrows with the tip of his finger.

Before Riven could even react, Ronan’s eyes snapped open. His hand shot out with lightning speed, grabbing Riven’s wrist tightly.

Riven froze.

But almost immediately, Ronan’s expression softened. Realizing it was just his mate, he brought Riven’s hand closer to his lips and pressed a kiss against the inside of his wrist, right over the delicate blue veins.

The small act made Riven’s heart skip a beat.

"Why are you up so early?" Ronan asked, his voice still heavy with sleep, low and rough.

Riven shrugged with an innocent smile, pretending like he hadn’t been out sneaking around with Eli just minutes ago.

"I have a request," Riven said cheerfully. "A favour!"

At that, Ronan frowned, immediately suspicious.

"I’m afraid you’re all out of favours," he said dryly, his sapphire eyes narrowing at Riven.

Riven pouted dramatically.

"Noooo! I don’t accept that!" he protested, his lower lip jutting out in a way that he knew was absolutely unfair.

Ronan’s frown deepened. He clearly remembered the last time Riven had asked for a "favour." It had resulted in Riven getting injured, and the wound was still fresh. Every time he saw it, a deep growl of anger rumbled in his chest.

Where did this half-breed get the audacity to ask for another favour already?

Still, when Riven looked at him like that, with big, shiny eyes full of fake tears, it was hard to say no.

"What is it this time?" Ronan asked cautiously. freēnovelkiss.com

"I want to go back home," Riven said earnestly.

Ronan immediately stiffened.

"This is your home now," he said firmly.

Riven shook his head with even more drama than necessary, his ears drooping so pitifully that Ronan almost forgot to breathe.

"My old home!" Riven insisted. "I still have some belongings left behind! I want them!"

Ronan exhaled through his nose. Of course, he knew all about Riven’s past. When Riven had first run away, Ronan had launched a thorough investigation. He knew about the cold house, the cruel father, the miserable loneliness Riven had endured.

He had even taken some revenge for him, quietly.

Delivering several strategic blows to Riven’s father’s political standing, stripping him of influence piece by piece. It had hurt the nobleman more than any physical wound could have.

Still, the thought of letting Riven set foot there again made Ronan’s instincts roar in protest.

"I’ll get someone to bring your belongings here," he offered instead.

Riven immediately shook his head harder, his hair flopping into his face.

"No! What if they forget something important?" he argued. "Besides... I want you to come with me!"

Riven’s voice dropped into something conspiratorial, almost coaxing.

"I’ll give you a tour of my childhood home," he said, eyes twinkling with mischief. "There’s a special place I used to hide in. I never told anyone about it. You’d be the first person to see it."

Riven clasped his hands together dramatically, looking up at Ronan with all the innocence and excitement he could fake.

Ronan stared at him, his brain clearly working overtime.

Since Riven had openly admitted in the past that he was more fond of Soren, an admission that still burned Ronan’s pride, Ronan had been desperately, quietly fighting for more affection and attention.

And now Riven was offering him something exclusive?

A secret hideout? Something even Soren didn’t know about?

Well.

Wasn’t that just perfect?

Ronan’s arms tightened around Riven, pulling him flush against his chest. His tail flicked behind him, betraying his internal excitement.

He pretended to give it some thought, humming thoughtfully, but Riven could see the way his eyebrows furrowed, he was so close to saying yes! He just knew it!

Finally, Ronan sighed, long-suffering.

"One condition," he said gruffly.

"Anything!" Riven chirped, a little too eagerly.

Ronan narrowed his eyes.

"You do not leave my sight. For even one second."

Riven nodded solemnly, hand over heart.

"I promise! I’ll be glued to you! You would get annoyed with me even!"

Riven dived and stuck himself to Ronan’s exposed chest. He rubbed his face against the firm, defined muscles. Maybe he should give them a lick. No, Riven told himself that he would try not to give in to his impulsive thoughts!

Ronan couldn’t help but let out a low chuckle as Riven nestled against him like an oversized kitten. With an indulgent hand, he rubbed Riven’s head, running his fingers through the soft strands of hair.

Riven leaned into the touch shamelessly, sighing in pure contentment. His ears twitched slightly, and Ronan, unable to resist, reached up and pinched one between his fingers, tugging on it lightly.

Riven made a small yelp of protest, swatting at Ronan’s hand half-heartedly.

Ronan knew exactly what Riven was doing, the sly way he manipulated the situation to get what he wanted.

Ronan also knew that he was willing to let it happen.

It was a realisation he had made peace with a long time ago: if there was a fight between him and Riven, he would always be the one to lose without fail.

But strangely, losing didn’t feel bad when it came to Riven.

He huffed out a breath, half-amused, half-exasperated, and continued to rub slow circles over Riven’s head, letting the minutes stretch in comfortable silence.
