Chapter 249: Damage Control

** Eli **

The sound of a soft door click made Eli realize that while he contemplated the dilemma of troublesome family members, the running water in the bathroom had stopped, and Harper was now standing at the door wrapped in a bath towel, staring suspiciously at the phone in his hand.

"Don’t tell me you actually took pictures of those ’unfiltered muscles’ and are reviewing them right now?" she asked. "I mean, not that I mind, but—"

"..."

Geez. Just how shameless did she think he was? He wasn’t that kinky in bed!

"Unfortunately, I think you’ll much prefer unfiltered pictures to what I’m actually looking at." Eli stretched out an arm and pulled her back into the bed, tucking her in by his side before handing her his phone. "Tyler got his job offer and is apparently planning his move to Davenshire soon. I assume he has also texted you about it at the same time."

Harper stared again at the phone, now a bit blankly. "Oh," she said at last.

Yeah, oh indeed.

A knowing silence stretched on for a few moments. "Well, did he not ask us for a place to stay this time?" Harper recovered first from the shock, her expression changing fast enough to a mischievous grin. "If he did, he’d be welcome to use my apartment for as long as he wants. The place is sitting there empty anyway, and I’ll be kind enough to only ask for half the rent."

Eli raised an amused eyebrow. "You mean you’ll be generous enough to let him sleep in our bed? I’m actually not quite sure how thrilled he’ll feel about that, considering the kind of undesirable dreams he might get thinking about all the things that could’ve happened on that mattress."

Harper blinked. Then she covered her face with a groan of laughter.

"Oh God. I suppose the trauma we’ve caused him with that web novel Chapter is not something one can easily get over with." Her hands were still over her cheeks as she peeked at him from between her fingers, shoulders shaking with mirth. "Poor brother. Too bad we can’t scourgify his innocent eyes."

Eli only smirked as he dropped a kiss over her eyelids. Innocent eyes were a thing of the ancient past, as far as the two of them were concerned.

"Seriously though, I think we should try to compensate for the damage we’ve done." Harper laid her head down over his arm, contemplating. "Especially if we’re all going to live in the same city again ... I want the two of you to be able to handle each other eventually without either breaking into fights or requiring two bottles of whiskey. Which, according to the last two tries you’ve braved, didn’t turn out very promising."

That elicited a genuine sigh out of Eli. "You have quite an ambitious goal, and I highly doubt that either a food invitation or camping weekend is going to work this time."

"Fortunately there are lots of other options to try though." Harper considered for a moment before offering, "We can go apartment hunting with him."

"Ugh ... After hearing him whine during the whole camping trip about us being ’city people’?" Eli was dubious. "Not sure if he’ll be satisfied at all with any help we can provide on the subject. I think we’re better off finding him an RV site to stay at than any apartments we think are suitable." free𝑤ebnovel.com

"... Fair enough." Harper considered it again. "Oh! Then how about we try to set him up for a date? He broke up with his girlfriend earlier this year, and as far as I know, there hasn’t been any news on his love life since then. Maybe if he’s got enough to focus on in his own relationship, he’ll stop being so nosy about someone else’s."

Hmm. He liked how this girl’s brain worked. "That actually sounds pretty feasible ... You know any eligible single ladies?"

"Oh, tons." The girl’s tone suddenly changed a little as she giggled. "You know, countless eligible single ladies in my office have been drooling over a certain handsome heir to Sterling Trust ever since the Hawaii trip. I wonder what might happen if I invite my brother to a company party and introduce him as the best friend of that handsome heir?"

... There were just too many suspicious assumptions in those statements that Eli didn’t even know where to start. "You mean former best friend," he settled on saying.

"Pfft. He’ll get over it, or I’ll make him. My brother—"

Harper paused, and when she looked up at him again, a slightly wicked twinkle was back in her eyes.

"What?" Eli asked, a somewhat bad omen rising in the back of his mind.

"You think there’s any chance Emory might be interested?" Harper smirked. "Your sister and my brother ... I just can’t resist the thought. It’s like the perfect match they write about in novels!"

"..."

What was going on in this girl’s head, to think it was possibly a good idea to put one family nightmare together with another family nightmare? That was not the recipe for creating miracles, and Eli couldn’t even think of another option more horrifying than this!

"Alright, alright." Harper chuckled, seeing the stricken look on his face. "No brotherly and sisterly alliances then. I’ll pay more attention to the other candidates. Who knows, maybe this is a great opportunity for me to get rid of some of those drooling fangirls in the office who spend a little too much time staring at your pictures on the golden couple scoreboard."

This time, Eli laughed at the slightly jealous look on her face. "As long as you save this particular fangirl for me." He brushed a strand of loose hair off of her forehead, dropping a kiss there instead. "She can keep drooling over me for as long as she wants. Even if it’s literally while she sleeps on top of me."

The fangirl grinned, and she replied affirmatively with a big kiss square on his lips.
