Chapter 108: Entering the Hallowed Halls
After walking for some time Eric and Alina made their way through the throng of people.
There were many hopeful applicants young nobles and royals all dreaming of getting into the Academy.
They were surrounded by their entourages their servants and guards. Eric and Alina finally reached the imposing main gate of the United Academy.
It was a huge and impressive entrance.
Numerous individuals clearly Academy staff members were stationed outside the gate.
They were methodically guiding each prospective student through the initial processing the first steps of admission.
These staff members were not full-fledged Professors the highest teachers.
Eric knew from his prior readings about the Academy that there was a distinct hierarchical structure a clear ranking system within its faculty. Professors held the highest teaching rank.
Above them were the Headmasters of various departments who managed different sections of the Academy. And at the very apex of the academic ladder the top position stood the Principal.
Of course even above the Principal was the Emperor himself.
Though it was widely known that the Emperor rarely intervened directly in the day-to-day affairs of the Academy. He preferred to let its esteemed respected faculty manage its operations.
The Emperor trusted them.
As Eric looked around he noticed that many of the royal children the princes and princesses were accompanied by their fathers the Kings themselves.
The presence of so many kings lent an air of solemn importance to the occasion. It showed how significant this Academy was.
A pang of nostalgia a wistful memory mixed with a familiar sense of his own unique circumstances touched Eric.
He recalled when his two older brothers Raven and Leonard had come to the Academy years ago. His father King Noor had been unable to accompany them then.
He had been too busy with pressing matters of state important kingdom business. Instead it had been their mother Queen Annelise who had made the long journey to the Empire.
She had seen her sons off at the Academy gates. Eric remembered feeling a little sad that his father couldn’t be there for his brothers.
He was lost in this brief reverie this short moment of remembering the past when he noticed Alina beside him. She was visibly nervous. Her hands were clasped tightly together in front of her.
Her gaze was darting around looking at the imposing facade the grand front of the Academy and at the stern-faced faculty members who looked very serious.
She was clearly feeling overwhelmed.
Eric took a deep breath. He tried to project a calmness an outward sense of peace that he didn’t entirely feel inside.
He placed a reassuring hand on Alina’s shoulder. "We should go inside now Alina," he said. His voice was gentle but firm.
"It’s time."
Alina looked at Eric. Her eyes were wide with a mixture of fear and anticipation excitement for what was to come.
She nodded slowly. She took strength from his seemingly composed demeanor his apparent calmness.
Together they approached one of the faculty members stationed at the gate. This man was exceptionally tall. He was easily six and a half feet in height.
He had a broad powerful build that spoke of physical prowess of great strength.
He wore the distinct uniform of the Academy. It was a practical yet dignified attire suitable for a teacher. He bore the Academy’s symbol a special emblem emblazoned on his chest.
The man looked down at Eric and Alina as they approached. His expression was neutral. It showed no emotion.
He held out two sheets of paper towards them. "Fill in your names and the required information on these forms," he instructed.
His voice was deep and resonant powerful. "Then proceed to the grounds ahead past the gate and wait with the other students who have already arrived."
Eric and Alina both took a form from him.
They quickly filled in their names their kingdom of origin which was Estoria and other necessary details like their age.
Then they handed the completed papers back to the tall faculty member. The man took the forms and scanned their contents briefly looking them over. freēwēbηovel.c૦m
Then with a quick flick of his wrist he tossed the two papers into the air. Instantly the two forms burst into bright emerald green flames.
It was a magical smokeless fire that consumed the paper completely in just a few seconds.
From the dying embers of the green fire two small bird-like constructs made of pure green energy emerged. They looked like tiny glowing birds.
They chirped once. The sound was like tinkling glass very delicate. Then they took flight soaring over the high Academy walls and disappearing within the grounds.
It was a very impressive display of magic just for processing forms.
The tall faculty member gestured with his hand towards the now-open gateway. "Proceed inside," he said. His voice was devoid of inflection. It was flat and unemotional.
Feeling a fresh wave of nervousness mixed with a little excitement Eric and Alina stepped through the massive gates. They walked into the grounds of the United Academy.
They were not alone. A steady stream of other young hopefuls children of nobles and royalty from all across the continent were also making their way inside.
The anxiety the worry on their faces was a mirror of what Eric and Alina felt in their own hearts.
Everyone was nervous.
After walking a short distance along a wide paved path they emerged into an enormous open field. It was a huge grassy area. Here numerous Academy staff members clad in similar uniforms to the man at the gate were already present.
They were efficiently organizing the arriving students. They were directing them into separate orderly lines.
The lines seemed to be based on some criteria some system that Eric couldn’t immediately discern or understand. Students who had arrived before Eric and Alina were already being placed further ahead in these forming queues.
The immensity of the United Academy and the sheer number of applicants hoping to get in was beginning to truly sink in for Eric.
This was a very big deal.
And there were so many people competing for a place.
