Chapter 104: A clash with an opinionated nurse.
The doctors were tending to Mo Liang, not only was he unconscious but he had lost all of his hair. Mei Mei was smiling, she could not even hide her happiness if she tried. Mo Liang was very vain when it came when it came to his appearance.
He was a walking shampoo commercial, a human peacock, a living breathing hair tutorial. Having lived with him for three years, Mei Mei knew that better than anyone. Every morning, he would wash his thick dark hair, stand before a mirror and inspect almost every strand ensuring not a single hair was out of place. If he saw a gray hair, he would run to the nearest high end hair saloon.
It was a secret but he carried a pocket mirror at all times, checking his reflection every thirty minutes or so. If he was in a restaurant or any place with reflective windows he would sit by one, preening like a majestic bird, running his fingers through his hair as if he were a rare tropical species.
Disaster had struck, the perfect hair was all gone. Mei Mei could only imagine what the look on his face would be like when he opened his eyes and discovered he was no longer an exotic species but an everyday spotless egg.
She supposed that it would be a while before he showed up in front of the press or took any pictures. Without eyebrows and hair his fanatic fans would run away probably.
While she was laughing, her lawyers were not. They were already on their phones, discussing any possible consequences of Mei Mei putting a metal in Mo Liang’s hands while lightning struck him. There was a possibility of Mo Liang claiming intentional body injury after all.
She was still laughing when the three doctors that gone in to treat Mo Liang stepped out of the room, puzzled from the frowns on their faces.
"Miss Jun Meilin," a male doctor approached her, "Were you in the room when lightning struck him?"
"Five times!!" Mei Mei exclaimed, holding up a palm with fingers spread widely. "I was so scared, I have never seen anything like it."
"What happened before it struck him?" Another doctor asked.
"Don’t answer that." The male lawyer told her.
Even an answer to a question as simple as that could be used against her if his lawyers claimed that she had something to do with the lighting.
The doctor that had asked the first question shook his head. "I have never seen anything like this. He has been struck by lightning seven times and yet his body is not injured. With the exception of the hair loss everywhere, we see no signs of danger. Perhaps this is not lightning and it is something else."
"Doctor, he just returned from space, maybe he picked up a parasite up there that attracts lightning. Maybe you should run more tests just to be safe. Cut some flesh, open his intestines. Have you ever watched any of those movies in which astronauts return to earth with alien species in their bodies? We earthlings should not be careless." Mei Mei said in a suggestive way.
"Do you mean...." The doctor started.
"Our client will be leaving now." The female lawyer cut in. In case Mo Liang was taken to a black site and cut into, their client was unrelated to the matter. Who told Mo Liang to be a weird lightning conductor?
Before leaving, the lawyers made Mei Mei sign another divorce document that was left on the table for Mo Liang to sign whenever he regained consciousness.
"Aren’t you his wife? Why are you leaving?" A nurse asked.
She was one of two nurses that had been on Mo Liang’s case since he arrived at the hospital. She was the same nurse that had dropped the metallic tray. The way she was looking at Mei Mei told her all that she needed to know about what the nurse thought about her.
"Don’t respond to that." The female lawyer told her. She looked at the nurse and said, "My client is separated from Mr. Mo Liang and she has already signed the divorce papers. If someone is needed to sit by his sick bed side, I can share with you his mother’s phone number."
The nurse crossed her arms so tightly, her lips flattened into a thin unforgiving line. There was loud and yet quiet disapproval in her eyes.
"Lets go." The female lawyer told Mei Mei.
The nurse was fast, she dashed out in front of them and spread her arms out like an eagle’s wings soaring through the sky. "Eh! Why are you leaving just like that? I know that you are going through a divorce because he cheated but you cannot be so heartless like this. He is still unconscious, we don’t know when he will wake up. At least you should wait until someone else arrives. You can be a decent human even if you hate him. If you are this heartless, I can understand why he cheated."
"Nurse Deng Fei!! This is highly inappropriate. You cannot speak to the family of a patient like that." One of the doctors exploded.
"But she is heartless. He is a hero, no matter what he has done, she should treat him fairly." The nurse yelled out her defense.
"Don’t respond to her." The male lawyer told Mei Mei.
Mei Mei sighed, a soft dismissive sound that made nurse Deng Fei’s skin prickle with irritation. "You would not be here without him you know. He saved your life, the least you can do is wait until he opens his eyes at least."
"I don’t owe him anything." Mei Mei replied.
Nurse Deng Fei’s hands fell to the sides, she tightened her hands into fists. She had seen cold women at their husband’s sick bedsides. Some were even wives that could not stand the men because they had beaten them, cheated them financially and put them through worse things than what Jun Meilin had experienced.
When those men were dying, those women had still faithfully remained at their bedsides, some even refused to leave day or night. In her opinion, this Jun Meilin lacked the virtues of a good wife.
"Stop it." The other nurse whispered to Ding Fei. She was being unprofessional and creating a scene that was attracting other people. Behavior like this reflected badly on the hospital and Ding Fei was bound to be reprimanded.
"Nurse Ding Fei, you are not needed here anymore." One of the doctors said sternly.
Ding Fei ignored the doctors and her colleague, she looked at Mei Mei and said, "He is your husband, when you marry a cow you follow the cow and when you marry a dog you follow the dog for the rest of your life. Even when you die, you are supposed to be the ghost of your husband’s family."
Mei Mei’s lips parted slowly, rising into a smile. "Then I wish you and your dog a happy life forever."
She turned around and walked away, slowly, deliberately.
