Chapter 135: Behind the heavenly scroll.
Mei Mei looked at the scroll with newer bulging eyes that were about to fall out of their sockets. She wondered what the real scroll would be doing out in the open world. Had nobody in the royal family noticed that it was missing!
The more she looked at it, the more she like it. Artifact identification was not her strongest talent but she knew the system would not lie to her.
"Wow! I am really a lucky child. First I found that red eyed cat deity and now I have found the real scroll of heaven’s mandate!" She squealed and slapped the dashboard of the car. "I was really born with a physique that attracts money."
She went ahead to praise herself for five minutes and C4 just watched her with a mixture of disdain and disbelief. She had found the cat deity because she was living as a a servant for the Mo’s and he had led her to the scroll. Where did her so called money attracting physique come from?
If Mo Jingzhe made this claim, it would support him but not her. "If you have finished praising yourself perhaps you can share with me what you plan to do with the scroll. The emperor has people looking for it."
"I am not giving this back." She declared immediately. "Finders keepers. You snooze, you loose. The early bird gets the worm..."
"I get it, you are keeping the scroll." C4 rolled his eyes. "Do you plan to sell it? If I calculate the market price right now, you can easily earn seven hundred twenty million and fifty thousand yuan. I can also convert the price to other currencies and give you options. I can also help you find a buyer on the black market."
"Ne need, I will just hang it in my private lounge at the camp." She answered. She was not a great fan of the ruling family currently but she still loved her empire. To sell it overseas would be a betrayal of her principles. Moreover her mother had worked hard to return many missing or stolen artifacts to their homeland.
If she sold the scroll overseas, her mother would be heartbroken. She held the scroll up to the rays of sun that were seeping into her car through the small opening of the window and a divine glow came from it.
"Wow, I never thought I would see this glow from up close. Truly heavenly."
She gasped further as the words on the scroll started to move on their own magically in what looked like a flame.
C4 snorted. "There is nothing heavenly about that scroll. It is not magical, it is nothing but science...an illusion that was created by a monk at the behest of an emperor who wanted his reign to be legitimate. Human history is full of kings and emperors that claimed to ordained--chosen by God.
I have analyzed this painting and I can tell you that it was created using moonstone dust that was turned into a lacquer."
Mei Mei used her phone to search the meaning of lacquer.
C4 went on..."When this lacquer is applied to silk, it is absorbed and the result is a ghostly hue or the glow from within. The ink seems to have rare phosphorescent minerals which allow the scroll to flicker and the golden glow look like a living fire when exposed to incense, sunlight or smoke.
The final touch is the hidden gold flecks concealed in a layer behind the silk. They were arranged deliberately so that the symbols shift on their own, making it look as if the gods themselves are communicating."
His analysis took all the magic out of it and within seconds, all Mei Mei could see was a piece of paper which was not special anymore.
"You just have to take all the fun out of it." She muttered.
"I can do the cat next. Do you want to know how those red rubies project a cat paradise?" C4 asked. On the virtual screen, he was smiling like a villain, his little sharp teeth were on full display.
"No." She answered sullenly.
She was one of those people that believed in magic, miracles, spirits and something special in the universe.
"Do you want to know the best part about this mandate?" C4 asked her.
Reluctantly she nodded. "Beneath the layers of silk and golden lacquer, the monk that put together the mandate left his fingerprints. Clear evidence that the mandate was not heavens will but that of man. Why do you think he did it?"
Mei Mei shrugged. "Maybe he wanted to leave a piece of himself on his work. Painters mark their work, dogs mark their territory, every creature does something to prove their ownership."
"Or the monk needed a stopgap measure in case the emperor was not a great ruler. All the monk had to do was reveal the secret about the mandate and the emperor would be brought down." C4 made a counter suggestion. "Or the monk used this fact to blackmail the emperor. The emperor controlled the empire and the monk controlled him."
Mei Mei decided to look up the history of the Emperor Xian Zhi who ruled the empire in 1421.
C4 pulled up his history on the virtual screen. "I knew that you would be interested and I prepared the information. Emperor Xian Zhi’s reign lasted for twenty two years. In this twenty second year of leadership, soldiers laid siege to a temple that was believed to be harboring bandits and all the dwellers were slaughtered, including the monks. Now why do you suppose that was?"
Mei Mei had learned about that incident in the history class. The slaughter of the monks was one of the most gruesome crimes ever committed by an emperor of their nation.
Emperor Xian Zhi had fallen off his horse and died of illness one month later. People had called his death a punishment from the gods. They said that he had lost heavens mandate.
With the revelations that C4 had revealed, Mei Mei had a different view of history that was unknown to the rest of the empire.
"I am still keeping the scroll." She told C4.
"I never said you shouldn’t. I just wanted to share some interesting facts with you. Now, about the human man, what do we do with him?" C4 answered.
"Who is he?" She asked.
C4 had already prepared the information for her. "Han Rui, twenty two years old and a third year university student. He is studying medicine, his grades are not remarkable but passable. His background is ordinary, Han Rui is average in every way except for his face.
He is a pretty boy...that is what you humans call someone like him. According to his last post on weibo, he got a job working as waiter at the Pearl River Skyline hotel. He started the job yesterday night and it seems he was kidnapped on that very night."
Mei Mei looked over the kidnapped young man, nodding her head in agreement. He was a pretty boy, with a face that was meant for the entertainment business.
"He would make a great Whiskers the alien." She said. "I think we should keep him."
"Huh! Do you want to kidnap a kidnapped man?" C4 blurted out.
