Chapter 153: Was she a bad or good mother?

There was no denying that she had harmed herself as well in the process of trying to keep her family intact. While she had told herself many times that she was doing it for happiness of her daughter, in the end all she had brought Mingzhu were doubts and misery.

Jun Meilin wondered if she was a bad mother. A good mother would probably have divorced as soon as her husband’s mother called their daughter a money loser and her husband remained silent. Or when her husband said his daughter’s birthday was not as important as a night out with his friends.

Or when her young daughter was forced to stand outside the house after school by her grandmother on a rainy day. By the time Mei Mei had returned from work, Mingzhu was hiding with a dog inside the doghouse owned by the security guard of their apartment.

Mei Mei had been lost for words that night. She did not know if she had to thank the security guard or slap him for putting her daughter in a dog house.

She had been so angry that she fought with Mrs. Sun that day and then she and Mei Mei had been kicked out of the house. They had slept in a hotel that night. The next day Mo Liang called her all the way from space which was a rare occurrence.

He apologized for what his mother had done and encouraged them to return home, promising that such a thing would never happen again. She went back and Mrs. Sun had apologized to them. Indeed she never did it again but never the less, the damage had been done.

"I am a bad mother." She said softly.

"No." Mingzhe disagreed. "I have seen bad mothers and you are not one. I am an imperial soldier, you would not believe some of the things that I have seen in my line of work. You wanted Mingzhu to have a full family, a father who loved and cared for her, a grandmother who dotted on her. Wanting your child to be loved is not a crime.

Even though you were docile while living with the Mo’s, you would fight anyone that dared to harm Mingzhu. You even chased Mo Ai with a knife when she pushed Mingzhu to the ground. It was at the Mo Xuelian’s birthday. You boldly told them all that you would be buried with anyone that harmed your daughter."

Mei Mei laugh-snorted at the memory.

"I had my people keeping tabs on you both so I know everything that happened to you." Jingzhe told her. He sat up and looked down at her. "You stayed with Mo Liang not for yourself but for her. I have seen women that sold their children to please men and men that did the same thing to please women.

I have seen mothers that starved and beat their children. One time when we chasing a terrorist I will not name into a small town. We found a woman that loved drinking and partying a little too much that she would chain her four year old child to the bed and go out. To keep the child from crying or calling for help, she would seal his mouth with a socking and cello tape.

What was funny was that she was divorced and she had fought for the custody of the child desperately. The father tried to take him but the court ruled in the mother’s favor because the boy was young at the time, only two years old. He remarried and moved to B city.

All the information he was receiving about the child was through phone calls. The mother told him that the boy hated him and wanted nothing to do with him. With time he stopped calling."

Mei Mei covered her ears. It sounded too sad a tale to listen to. But she still commented even with her ears covered. "The father should have visited his son. One trip alone would have enabled him to see that his son was not doing well."

Mingzhe nodded. "After we arrested the terrorist and rescued the boy, he was reunited with the father. The man was filled with guilt, he blamed himself for not having fought harder for custody. He hated the woman so much that he never wanted to see her again and without meaning to, he ended up harming his son.

I blame him too by the way. He divorced his wife because of her drinking and clubbing and yet he did not see how it would be a problem if his son was left with the same woman he was desperate to get away from.

It is why I say that you are not a bad mother. You knew that leaving Mingzhu with Mrs. Sun was not a good idea so you paid for extra hours at the day care center. You even started having her dropped off at your work place.

Your clothes were always old or mended but hers were in good condition. You fed her well, sent her to good day care centers and kindergartens. You loved her, played with her, read her her stories, protected her, taught her responsibility."

"I tried." Mei Mei said softly with a sad smile.

"You more than tried." Mingzhe assured her. "Do not just remind yourself of the bad moments because Mingzhu has had a bad day or a bad episode. You must also remember the good things. In a thirty or thirty one day month, one bad day should no make you doubt yourself."

The door to the gym was opened, three men in black entered, pushing in Jingzhe who was handcuffed.

"Look who has returned, the father of the year." Mingzhe scoffed.

Mei Mei kicked him gently as she stood up. Her wide eyes widened even more when she saw Jingzhe in handcuffs.

"Jingzhe!!" She exclaimed in horror. "What happened? Why are you in handcuffs? Were you arrested? Why? What crime did you commit? I am calling the lawyers right now."

"Relax." Mingzhe said casually. "Uncle probably told his men to bring him home as soon as Mingzhu started crying."

"Mingzhu cried!" Jingzhe shouted in surprise. He swelled like a python that wanted to attack. "Why did she cry? Was it the Mo’s again? I am going to kill...."

"It was...." Mingzhe started.

"Shut up." Mei Mei hissed at him.

Jingzhe was only twenty four, to put all this pressure and expectations on him was not fair. When it came to parenting, they had to go slowly to keep both Jingzhe and Mingzhu from being hurt in any way. She would explain to him in her own words the reasons as to why Mingzhu had cried.

"Where have you been?" Mingzhe asked Jingzhe.

"I had some work to do for Blue Galactic and then I flew to D city to meet the Ouyang family. I wanted to see their son, that famous kid that live streams games and battles. Mingzhu said she was a fan so I went in person to get some autographed toys for her. Why did Mingzhu cry?" He answered. There was still confusion in his voice however.

Something had happened at home, he could tell. But what?
