Chapter 92: The art of a good con.
Jun Yi just switched on another Tv and they caught up. Mo Liang had clasped his hands together and he was still talking.
"I wanted to give Mei Mei the whole world after marrying her. Everyone knows that her family cut her off after she married down. The burden of maintaining her old lifestyle now fell to me and I will tell you, it was no joke. I was...am lucky that she is a considerate woman and she was willing to find a job.
Pride would not let her return to her old circles, she looked for jobs that were below the standard of her education and training. I was still in space pilot school at the time and was working two jobs at the same time. We opened a company together, Space M, which was my idea. We were both breaking our backs at both ends to make a living and prove to everyone that we could rise to the top on our own.
I don’t think that we both realized we were spending less and less time together. I don’t know what it was like for her but for me, I was drowning in loneliness. For years, I tried ---tried to be present, tried to communicate, but the company, proving a point to her family, it was more important for her than anything else.
I am not blaming her, I was equally driven and in the end....we just lost our way. Mostly me because I was weak and made a mistake."
Like the good actor he was, with a bit of coaching, he made a masterful stroke. He had subtly shifted the blame, while looking like a man owning up to his mistakes. He made no outright accusations, said no harsh words, didn’t make fun of their situation the way Mei Mei had done--just suggested that outside forced had pushed him into doing what he did.
"I should have been stronger. I should have resisted." he added slowly.
Gao Jiajia wiped away a tear from the corner of her eyes, cleared her throat and asked, "So, why didn’t you resist?"
Mo Liang crossed one leg over the other and interlaced his finger on his knee. "Loneliness is an illness that can drive a person insane. We are all human, none of this was made to walk this earth alone. Doctor Tang Yue, she was in the same boat as I was. I cannot tell you her story, if she wishes to she will come out to the media herself.
But, what I can say is that after the death of her husband, our mutual friend, we grieved together. She was all I had to talk to and I was all she had to talk to. When people think about what its like to be up there in space, roaming the unknown they draw this adventurous fun filled image in their heads. But that is not what it is ninety nine percent of the time.
It is quiet, you drown in your thoughts often. It is terrifying because you have no idea what you will encounter or if it will be your last day alive. You find yourself growing closer to your companions, they become like family.
Doctor Tang Yue and I, we were already friends, there were years of friendly affection and understanding between us. She had always been like family and she was in pain after Caleb’s death. We would talk all the time on the ship, when she was crying I would hug and comfort her, reassure her that all would be well. An attraction that we never expected bloomed and one day I let my heart wander and for that I am deeply sorry for both women."
The room was silent, save for a few clicks of a camera held by the PR expert who had plans to distribute them to various medias with preferred headlines that they use in their articles.
Just like that, he had humanized the affair and wiped away the stain on Tang Yue’s name.
"Mr. Mo, are you saying that your wife drove you to cheat?" Gao Jiajia asked a question that had not been on Mo Liang’s approved list of questions.
Mo Liang had been prepared for such a question nevertheless. His eyes glistened and he loudly exhaled. "No, No. Of course not, I would never say that." He shook his head as if appalled at the thought. "I am saying that sometimes, two people fail each other in ways they never intended. I failed my wife in many ways and she did the same to me in different ways.
Both of us fell short of each other." He brought his hands together, and added, "Our marriage was not the bed of rose petals and champagne party we expected. It had thorns that cut deep and she gave her all to our child while I escaped to space and we avoided fixing our issues."
The audience was now torn, they could see how things fell apart from both ends. Mo Liang took another sip of water, contented in what he had accomplished. It was art. A balancing act so delicate, only a genius like him could pull it of. Conning people’s emotions was like breathing air to him.
"That was also intense." Gao Jiajia declared. "Does anyone else need a refreshment because I know I do."
The show went into another commercial break and when it returned Gao Jiajia was ready for another big question. freewebnøvel.coɱ
"The national space baby," she shook her head and sighed. "An affair is one thing, a child from that affair is another. Can you tell us more about this? Will you be raising this child?"
The crowd held its breath.
"I believe that children---all children are gifts, whether you want them or they come unexpectedly." Mo Liang lowered his gaze as if he was ashamed to share the truth. "This child, was never meant to be a secret from the world. I knew the scandal that would follow once his true birth was revealed and I readied myself for it.
He is innocent in all this and he deserves love, care and protection. All children in the world deserve this no matter the circumstances of their birth because children are born pure. It is we the adults that taint them.
I did not hide the child as Mrs. Xu intended to make the world believe. If that was the mission, he would have been named Xu Hao, not Mo Hao. I didn’t talk about him because I feared the scandal that would fall on him, the shadows of speculation and accusations.
You have seen it on the internet already, netizens are pointing their fingers at him, making him a villain, calling him a bastard, meatball, ugly. Someone even called him big ears. This innocent child is not seen as a child but an extension or proof of my betrayal and it is not fair to him. It is shameful that we as humans have come to such a low point in our lives that we wish death on four year old children."
On the screen behind, some of the worst things that had been said about Mo Hao were exposed. In some cases, people were describing how they would murder the child. Someone had even stabbed attached a paper to a brown teddy bear with the name Mo Hao and stabbed it!!!
