Chapter 139: The one I love is Augustine, not Denis.

Anne stood frozen, her face unreadable, but her eyes, burning with restrained fury, stared straight into Jeanne’s. She had taken enough. And she wasn’t going to stay silent much longer.

"The one I love is Augustine, not Denis," Anne said with barely contained emotion. "Open your eyes and look carefully before throwing around accusations. Sometimes when something is too close, you are blind to it."

Jeanne’s face twisted in fury. She hadn’t expected Anne to fight back — not like this. Her whole body seemed to tremble with the force of her rage, itching to lash out, to punish Anne for daring to challenge her, for daring to speak with such boldness.

"This insolence—" Jeanne growled, her words grinding out through clenched teeth.

But before she could unleash her wrath, Augustine’s voice cut through the tension.

"Anne..."

Anne’s heart lifted at the sight of Augustine. She rushed to him, forcing a smile to her lips as she tried to shake off the anger and humiliation of moments before. But the pain in her eyes was still there, and Augustine caught it instantly.

Instead of smiling back, he gently took her hand, concern clouding his face. "Are you alright? Did someone say something to you?" He shot a sharp, accusing glance at Jeanne.

"I’m fine," Anne replied softly, wanting to ease his worry.

"Are you really?" Augustine pressed, his suspicion unwavering.

Jeanne, swallowing her fury, stepped in with a syrupy smile. "Augustine, you worry too much. We were just having a little chat. Who would bully anyone here? We’re all family, after all."

But Augustine wasn’t fooled. He knew Jeanne’s true colors all too well — how she could wear a charming face in public and reveal her cruelty when no one was watching.

He remembered the insults, the harsh words, even the times she had pinched and hurt him when they were alone. Time had passed, but Jeanne hadn’t changed at all.

His eyes hardened. "I couldn’t care less about this so-called family," he said coldly. "The only reason I came tonight was for Grandpa. You, your husband, and your son mean nothing to me. So spare me the family nonsense."

Augustine tightened his hold on Anne’s hand and led her out of the mansion, not once looking back.

Jeanne stood frozen, rage simmering beneath her skin. No one had ever dared speak to her the way Augustine just had. "Such humiliation... I won’t forget this," she hissed under her breath.

Gabriel’s cold voice cut through her spiraling anger. "Why are you standing there like a statue?"

Jeanne snapped her head around and saw him approaching from the back porch, the sharp scent of tobacco hitting her before he even drew near. His expression was as unreadable as ever, but his tone carried its usual chill.

"Where is Denis?" Gabriel asked impatiently. "Call him. I need a word with him."

Jeanne blinked, trying to pull herself together. She recalled Denis slipping out earlier. "He left a little while ago. Why? What’s wrong?" she asked, picking up on the faint edge in Gabriel’s voice.

"It’s nothing," he brushed off her concern. "I’ll deal with him later. How is Tania?"

"She is resting," Jeanne replied.

"Good. Let her rest. We should get going."

Jeanne quickly objected. "I want to stay here tonight. Tania might need me."

Gabriel studied her for a moment, then gave a small nod. "Alright. We’ll stay the night."

Inside Augustine’s car...

The soft hum of the engine filled the silence between them. Augustine kept glancing at Anne, concern etched across his face. "Are you sure you’re alright?" he asked, his voice gentle but firm. "Don’t hide anything from me. If Jeanne said something to you, I want to know."

Anne gave him a reassuring smile. "Relax," she said lightly. "I know how to stand up for myself."

Augustine let out a slow breath, though his worry didn’t entirely fade. "Even so, I want you to tell me everything. I don’t want you carrying it alone."

Anne shook her head with a chuckle. "Forget about me for a second. Tell me about yourself. You were with Grandpa for a long time. What did he say? Is he still against us?"

A grin broke across Augustine’s face. "He has already accepted you. That’s why he invited us to dinner tonight. And more than that — he is planning to announce our marriage."

Anne’s eyes widened with surprise. "Really?"

"Really," Augustine confirmed, his grin widening. "Next week, at Denis and Tania’s engagement party, Grandpa is going to announce our marriage to everyone."

Anne’s heart leapt, and a broad smile lit up her face. She knew Gabriel and Jeanne still had their reservations about her, but the fact that the family patriarch was fully on their side was more than she had hoped for.

"Why do you look so shocked?" Augustine teased, catching her stunned expression.

"I guess... I didn’t expect him to go that far," Anne admitted. "It’s one thing to accept our relationship privately, but announcing it to everyone is a big step."

Her smile dimmed slightly as her thoughts shifted. "But don’t you think it’s time we exposed Tania? The whole family is celebrating her pregnancy and getting ready for the engagement. How much longer are we going to keep silent?"

Augustine only smirked, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Let them celebrate a little longer. Then we’ll reveal the truth — at the perfect moment."

Anne didn’t push the matter further. She, too, was curious to see how long Tania could keep up her act — sooner or later, people would notice if her supposed pregnancy didn’t show any signs.

"Alright," Anne said with a teasing smile. "I’ll wait patiently. But there is something I’m not willing to be patient about."

Augustine flicked a glance her way, a spark of amusement in his eyes, before he turned his focus back to the road. "Oh? Getting impatient now, are you?"

"Very much," Anne said playfully. "I can’t wait to get home."

At her words, Augustine felt a slow, heated rush stir along his spine. His grip on the steering wheel tightened slightly, and his voice dropped a shade deeper. "If you want, we could just pull over right here," he said, his tone suggestive."

Anne frowned in confusion. "Why would we stop? Wouldn’t that just make us late?"

Augustine let out a low, teasing chuckle and shot her a wink. "You already forgot? We got pretty adventurous in the backseat earlier this afternoon, remember?"

Anne’s mouth fell open as realization hit her. Her whole face turned red. She had only meant she was eager to talk to him about his feelings for her from their school days, but Augustine had completely misread her meaning, assuming she was craving another intimate moment.

"It was... exhilarating," Augustine said with a mischievous grin. "I never thought I’d end up making love in a car. It was a first for me. And honestly? I wouldn’t mind doing it again."
