Chapter 779: Valravn:The RavenKind

Gabbi had every reason to fear the birdman. She finally recognized his kind, her blood running cold. The stories from her childhood came rushing back. The folklores that were told — Ravens of the slain, valravn.

According to legend, these creatures were born when ravens feasted on the hearts of men slain in battle. It was said that after consuming the heart of a child, they gained the power to shape-shift, becoming something far more dangerous. Intelligent, cunning, and hungry for more than just flesh, the Valravn were the kind of creatures that made even the bravest warriors shudder. They could strike deals with humans, either taking the child by force or being promised it in exchange for some dark favor.

And now, one stood before her.

Gabbi’s heart pounded in her chest, the primal instinct to flee battling with the terrifying reality that escape might be too late at this point. This was supposed to be nothing more than a bedtime story, a legend to scare children into staying close to home and disobedient children into obeying. Yet here he was, a living nightmare, staring at her with a brooding intensity that made her skin crawl.

Was he planning to kill her? Or worse, eat her heart to complete some gruesome transformation? The possibility paralyzed her with fear.

Gabbi thought—if he was already a Valravn, did that mean there was another one lurking, waiting to complete the ritual? Was she really destined to end up as a tasty meal to these creatures. If that was the case, then she hoped her bones choked them.

The birdman took a step toward her, and Gabbi screamed, stumbling backward. His eyes narrowed, but he stopped, choosing not to advance any further.

He seemed to recognize the fear in her eyes, and for a moment, a flicker of something like sympathy crossed his face.

His hands went into the pockets of his pants, a gesture that seemed oddly human.

"You have a knack for wanting to plunge to your death," Azrael said, his voice mixed with frustration and something else—concern, maybe? "What were you thinking, stepping on a loomhole and getting transported to the city like that?"

Gabbi gave him a puzzled look, barely processing his words. She understood the question, but fear had robbed her of her voice.

"I’m talking to you," Azrael repeated, his tone sharper as he took a step closer, forgetting his earlier resolve not to frighten her.

"Don’t come any closer!" Gabbi shrieked, raising her hands to shield her face. She turned her head away, unwilling to witness the moment he might decide to end her life.

Azrael halted, his gaze softening slightly as he felt the pull of the mate bond, the force that connected him to this human woman, urging him to heed her wishes.

Gabbi peeked through her fingers, looking up at him and was surprised to see him stop. Huh, what was up with him?

"Are you going to eat me?" she asked cautiously, her voice trembling.

"Eat you?" Azrael echoed, confusion etching his features.

"Your kind eats dead bodies. You take the hearts of children to become..." She trailed off, her eyes involuntarily drifting over his muscular frame — he wasn’t so bad though.

Shut up and concentrate, Gabbi!

She shook her head, trying to refocus. "To become what you are."

Azrael let out a low string of what sounded like profanities, though Gabbi caught the gist of it: "You humans are full of imagination." and, "The nerve of her to compare us to those damn vultures!"

He then said to her, his tone exasperated. "If I wanted to eat you, do you think I would’ve let you sleep the whole day away?"

Although he did make sense, her suspicion wasn’t entirely erased. This could be an act for all she knows. She countered him. "

"I’m a human from the Fae realm, and I’ve met the most twisted of minds. You can never tell what creatures like you are thinking. Maybe this is your way of fattening me up before having me for dinner... or letting me put down my guard before hunting me down like some animal."

Azrael’s expression darkened, his jaw tightening as he fought to contain his anger. The idea that his own mate thought of him this way stung more than he’d care to admit. He took a step closer, determined to rectify the situation.

"What are you doing? No, stay right there! Stop moving! Stop it!" Gabbi’s panic spiked as the birdman began to approach her again.

She looked around desperately, looking for a way to escape. Her eyes darted to the door. It was her only hope.

Without another thought, Gabbi made a run for it. But before she could reach the door, he was there in a flash, blocking her path. What the....

He reached out towards her, but she screamed and twisted away, narrowly avoiding his grasp. However, Azrael had lost his patience and was determined to get a hold of her.

Thus, what followed next was a chaotic game of "catch me if you can". fгeewebnovёl.com

It was obvious that Azrael was intentionally going easy on Gabbi, trying not to scare her too hard. But Gabbi had completely lost her mind to fear.

She darted around the room, grabbing anything within reach and hurling it at him, screaming. "Don’t touch me!"

Azrael dodged most of the projectiles, frustration mounting as he tried to calm her. "Stop it, human! Just calm down!" he shouted, but his words fell on deaf ears. Gabbi was too far gone in her panic to listen.

In her frantic attempts to escape, Gabbi didn’t notice the shards of the broken vase on the floor she had thrown at him earlier. She would have stepped on them if Azrael hadn’t moved with lightning speed, catching her just in time. He stepped on the sharp pieces himself, wincing slightly from the pain, but his focus remained on her.

Now that he had her in his grasp, Gabbi’s struggles intensified. She scratched, kicked, and thrashed against him with all the strength she could muster. There was a tick in Azrael’s jaw as his patience finally snapped.
