Chapter 191: Fight Over The Seat Belt

(Arata)

"Mr Whittle, you don’t have to. I can find my own way." I didn’t want him to bother himself but in reality, I didn’t want him to gloat in case Karsten told him what went down between us.

He simply shook his head, the perfect hair elegantly swirled with his movements.

"Karsten said you shouldn’t be walking down alone. Come, it’s no big deal." He peeled himself off the wall and pointed with his hand towards the stairs.

Nodding, I moved forward and began stepping down.

He matched my steps and casually said, "So demotion?"

That was the kind of conversation I was avoiding having with him, I knew his coming to take me downstairs was planned. Karsten wouldn’t send him, he was always irritated by his presence near me.

"Everyone needs a break from working in proximity to your best friend, as you must know best," I sarcastically answered, and he threw his head back and laughed, letting the light catch his extremely white teeth.

"True, he is a heartbreaker. He is my best friend but he is incapable of loving anyone but himself." Ranold’s expression shifted as his eyes found mine. "I know because I am the same. We just want sex and keep it casual. Commitment is a big no." He tiredly sighed as he skipped a few steps ahead and turned to face me.

"You are a sweet girl, Arata. So guard your heart before he squashes it completely." The seriousness in his voice told me he didn’t know that his friend had already done it.

He had stomped all over my feelings and thrown me out like I didn’t matter.

"Thanks for the concern, Mr Whittle," I politely answered, trying to keep the emotions at bay.

Ranold jumped down three stairs and landed skillfully on the flat surface before turning towards me. His face was masked with literal concerns as he stood facing me with his hands deep in his pockets.

"I am serious, Arata. There are things about Karsten you don’t know. Don’t get involved in his world, it’s too dark for you. Leave before you get sucked in."

I paused. Ranold was oblivious to how deeply disturbed my life was. Barely holding on to sanity, I was already in too deep but I wasn’t leaving until I had all the answers.

"I will keep your words in mind." But what he said left a mark on me. ’Don’t get involved in his world, it’s dark for you.’ What did he exactly mean by that?

Thankfully we had arrived at the basement parking lot. He held the door open for me and flashed me his signature charming smile.

I thanked him for escorting me downstairs and ambled towards the car.

Karsten and Caysir were already waiting for me. While the former looked pissed, his usually blank face showed emotions today, the latter appeared as if he had recently gotten an earful.

"Delivering your girlfriend, safe and sound," Ranold waved and called out from the door with a flirtatious smile which made Karsten’s jaw tighten further.

Ranold disappeared before the heartless beast snapped at him while Caysir lowered his head. I could only assume Caysir must have been sent away by Ranold and Karsten scolded him for leaving my side. He didn’t appreciate Ranold escorting me downstairs. That gave me an idea.

Maybe I should entertain his best friend more, just to vex him. Karsten certainly showed more emotions whenever Ranold was in my proximity.

Smugly I ignored the fuming beast and moved towards my side of the car. Caysir rushed to open the door and helped me settle in, taking my bag.

Karsten soon joined from the other side, reeking even more of tobacco. He seemed to be smoking more and more.

The silence fell between us like death as I tried to not bask in the thought that he was pissed. His hands clawed his knees as the veins stood out like bulging blue streams.

"Belt!" He finally seethed out as the car began to move and I hadn’t bothered putting it around me.

I ignored him as if I hadn’t heard what he had said and turned to stare out of the window. My fingers drummed my knee.

He leaned in, his hulking presence I felt even before I could see him. No part of him touched me, and yet that comforting proximity had my heart racing like a Formula 1 car.

Grabbing the buckle, he furiously pulled the belt. His hand grazed past my arm, and I tried to move away. The buckle he adjusted inside the latch, securing me in.

His head turned as I tried to move my face back but there was no space. There was hardly a centimetre between us, every hardened contour of his face I could see.

Those dead eyes were swirling with annoyance. I held onto his gaze, annoyance creeping up in mine but my heart and body had a mind of their own. They still loved his proximity after everything he had done.

"Hating me doesn’t mean you should jeopardise your safety," he groused with a clenched jaw, his nostrils flared as if he was breathing with difficulty.

I looked down at him with contempt, his heartless words still raw in my mind.

"Why do you care if I live or die? Shouldn’t you be relieved if I am dead, there won’t be anyone to bother you."

The mask of indifference cracked at the edges. No matter how hard he tried not to let any emotions leak out, his eyes flashed with such vulnerability at that moment that it almost made me flinch. It disappeared as quickly as it had come.

"I don’t have time to find and train another fake girlfriend. Stay alive." With those callous words, he straightened and moved away, leaving me cold and on the verge of fighting back tears. But I had promised myself I wouldn’t cry because of him anymore.

Reaching down I pressed the button and unlocked the belt, picking up the buckle I pulled and threw it away.

"You don’t tell me what to do anymore. Fuck you and your belt," I murmured in a low voice so Caysir won’t hear but only Karsten would.

Next thing I knew the hunk of ice had his muscular arms around my waist and lifted me up, pulling me into his lap. I tried to wriggle out of his hold but he was made of steel.

Quietly, he settled me in his lap, knowing I wouldn’t shout or make noise because of Caysir.

"Have it your way, Arata. No harm is coming to you, under my care."

His arms tight around me as if I was a precious possession he was afraid to lose. I awkwardly sat in his lap, facing away so I wouldn’t have to look at his face.

But the thickness and perfected muscles of his thighs I could feel so sensuously under my butt. I could even sense the warmness of his stupid breath on the back of my neck, making the hair on my nape stand up.

’Yeah! I will only break your heart, but your bones and flesh are where I draw the line.’

What double standards, Karsten Chevalier had.
