Chapter 264: Chapter 2 Telephone_2

Shen Chi had promised her that he would hurry back before she graduated.

Han Shouzhen did not know what task Shen Chi had taken on, but that didn’t mean she was unaware. Shen Chi was not one to strictly adhere to rules; even if he couldn’t lay all his cards on the table, he could still offer a hint or two. For Lin Xiaoguai, that was enough to give her a rough idea.

Perhaps it was her composure that had kept Shen Yinian from feeling panic all this time. Even though he had overheard some sympathetic words spoken behind his back and even though some with malicious intent had deliberately told him to his face that his father had sacrificed himself, he had never believed them.

Shen Yinian was now a first-grader, and his schoolwork never worried Lin Xiaoguai. She focussed more on nurturing his interests and hobbies.

Lin Xiaoguai always felt that if a person lacked hobbies, their personality would become rigid and inflexible, resulting in a joyless life. Not only would that affect mental health, but it could also have adverse effects on work, social interactions, and other areas.

Moreover, many people develop self-awareness through their hobbies, transforming interests into aspirations and thereby finding direction in life.

"Mom, I finished the tank model you gave me last week. Do you have a new one?" Lin Xiaoguai had tried many activities with her son—arts and martial arts alike—but Shen Yinian’s favorite was modeling.

"You’ve already completed it? That’s great!" Lin Xiaoguai bent down and kissed his cheek. "The new model won’t be ready for another couple of days. For now, go and properly display the one you’ve completed and remember to mark the date."

Shen Yinian had been learning model making since he was six and had already completed a significant number of pieces. Lin Xiaoguai had even cleared out a room for him to display his models.

When Shen Chi was at home, he would accompany his son making models. They had started learning together, although Shen Chi, being an adult, learned a bit faster. But his son was no slouch either, and she believed it wouldn’t be long before he surpassed Shen Chi, who had not invested as much effort into modeling.

Lin Xiaoguai had considered joining them, but she really lacked the talent for it, finding herself even less skilled than her son. She thought it was too disheartening and eventually gave up.

"Mom, what kind of model will be next? I want a fighter jet model. Can you get me one?" Shen Yinian asked excitedly.

Lin Xiaoguai patted his head and said, "I’ll try my best," while planning to look up modern fighter jet blueprints and have the workshop craft one.

Knowing that his mother would never let him down, Shen Yinian nodded and went to watch TV in the living room.

Lin Xiaoguai sighed. With one person missing, the house always seemed a bit empty.

The next day, Lin Xiaoguai was watering the flowers in the yard after breakfast when the phone inside the house suddenly rang.

"Hello!" she answered.

The other end was silent. Just as she was about to hang up, thinking it was a prank call, the person on the line spoke up.

"Wanwan, I’ll be taking the train back tomorrow." Shen Chi’s voice sounded tired, but there was a note of excitement.

Lin Xiaoguai covered her mouth in surprise and after a moment, she asked, "You completed your task?"

"Yes." Shen Chi seemed to smile, his voice deep. "I’m making this call in secret. Don’t tell anyone."

Lin Xiaoguai nodded quickly, then realized Shen Chi couldn’t see her and said, "Okay, I definitely won’t tell anyone."

Shen Chi’s laugh was more pronounced this time. "I just finished handing over the task. I feel exhausted, but I can’t seem to sleep at all. Tell me what’s been happening at home."

This was Shen Chi’s first call home since he had been on his mission, so he knew nothing about what had occurred over the year.

Lin Xiaoguai agreed and started by telling him about their son.

"At the beginning of the year, I took Little Niangao back to my hometown. He quickly joined the local kids and even participated in a grassroots ice-skating competition, where he won second place. When we got back, he was so upset he insisted I buy him ice skates, claiming he wants a rematch next year. Last time I went to a parent-teacher conference..."

She said a lot, and Shen Chi listened patiently throughout. When she finished, he asked, "Don’t just talk about our son, tell me about yourself."

"Me?" Lin Xiaoguai paused, "I don’t have much to tell."

Shen Chi sighed on the other end and then asked, "Are there still any young men at school pestering you?"

Lin Xiaoguai was momentarily puzzled before she understood his meaning and half-laughed, half-complained, "Why are you always concerned about this?"

"Is there or isn’t there?"

"They exist, but it’s just a younger student. Maybe because you’ve been absent so long, he doesn’t believe I’m married and won’t give up. Once you show up, that should solve it."

Shen Chi did not share his thoughts on that but changed the subject, "It’s getting hot again. Have you been eating well?"

"Yes, of course," her tone barely concealing her guilt.

"Forget it, I’ll deal with you when I get back. Didn’t you say you wanted to build a wisteria pavilion in the yard? Have you done that yet?"

"Not yet."

"Then I’ll do it when I get back. You also mentioned stringing some bead curtains. I managed to get some jade beads this time, and I’ll make you bead curtains when I return."

"Great, bring extra so I can make bracelets too."

"No problem. I also brought you some gold jewelry; you just wait, you’ll definitely like it this time."

Lin Xiaoguai responded somewhat helplessly, aware that Shen Chi seemed determined to make her fall in love with gold jewelry, getting more insistent despite her repeated disdain.

Of course, with her continuous rejection, his taste had indeed improved significantly.

Even after hanging up, the smile on Lin Xiaoguai’s face did not fade. However, because she couldn’t share the news of Shen Chi’s return, she felt a silly kind of happiness for a moment.
