Chapter 428: The Coralline Labyrinth

As our army kept advancing through the ground floor of G’Henna’s castle, we reached an area closer to the center where our visibility got even worse, not because it was darker but because there were massive coralline walls blocking our path.

The walls seemed to have grown naturally and were arranged in a strange pattern that almost resembled a labyrinth.

We could sense demonic energy flowing from within the coral labyrinth, so it was clear that there were devils somewhere around those walls.

To make our transversal of the area a bit easier, we decided to send smaller groups of soldiers so that they could explore every nook and cranny. Even though some of the pathways in the area were pretty wide, sending a thousand soldiers or more through it could easily work against us.

Vespera had hundreds of her demon spiders walking around the ground floor, and she decided to assign one small spider to each of the soldier groups. This would not only allow her to see everything they did, but the spiders could also help in a fight if they needed it.

Arashi and Vespera went into the labyrinth by themselves, saying they would reunite with us again near the staircase. Funnily enough, I never thought that those two would get along so well—I mean, I didn’t think they would hate each other either, but the Storm Dragon befriending the Queen Demon Spider wasn’t something that ever crossed my mind. frёewebnoѵēl.com

Melina and I were joined by Jackson, Karla, and Nessa—the two devils who were on our side. Of course, Yoru was also coming with us, but he was inside my shadow as I didn’t want to have any blindspots while inside enemy territory.

Our group was the first one to enter the labyrinth after Arashi and Vespera had already left, and a few minutes of walking later, we were ambushed by a few fiends who were stupid enough to attack us.

After taking them down with ease, we kept moving forward along the coral walls until Jackson spoke up, turning around to gaze at me.

"Ichiro, how exactly are you planning to beat Drakzen?" Jackson asked, his voice hinting at curiosity.

"Hmm? What do you mean? The same way I beat the other devils..." I replied, slightly confused at his question since it seemed obvious.

"Yeah, but then...?" Jackson continued, and at that moment, I understood what he meant.

"I’m not going to lie to you, Jack. I have different things in mind, but I won’t know which course to take until it’s time..." I said without stopping our walk.

I knew it was a vague answer, but I truly didn’t have a concise response. Jackson was worried about what would happen to him and other devils like Nessa, who were one in the million who were born with emotions and empathy.

I had already told myself that I would do anything in my power to help the people I cared about, but I didn’t want to promise anything since my victory wasn’t assured.

Still, Jackson seemed to take my response well and kept advancing with us, taking out the few fiends that kept trying to ambush us with complete ease.

Thanks to Vespera’s demon spiders guiding the way, we were able to get out of the labyrinth structure in just over twenty minutes, finding ourselves in a more open space riddled with demon corpses that were slowly turning to dust.

"Seems like our companions are already at the staircase..." I commented, noticing that the demons had either been burnt by lightning or slashed by thin claws, which I knew were from Vespera.

At that moment, I sent another message to the other teams. Communication was crucial in war, and knowing the status of your allies could be extremely helpful, so I told them about the labyrinth and told them to follow the demon spiders to get to the exit.

Based on the distance that our companions had measured before, we were still a few kilometers away from the staircase, but that wasn’t much of a problem for the teams that could move quickly by flying.

"Let’s do our allies a favor and clear this place," I said to my group.

In the blink of an eye, we all bolted straight toward the direction where the staircase was meant to be, killing any demon that we found standing in our way.

Suddenly, I heard my footstep cracking the ground, and when I looked down, I saw that there was a thin layer of ice covering the floor and a mist slightly shrouding our vision.

"Heh, good job, Frost!" Melina exclaimed, recognizing the ice from her companion.

Not even ten seconds later, the mist dissipated completely, and we could see the Ice Dragon sitting on top of a large coral, surrounded by dozens of frozen demons who were guarding the access to the staircase.

Just like Melina had asked him to do, Frost made way for us by taking care of all the demons near the staircase, and when we approached, Arashi and Vespera were waiting for us at the foot of the stairway.

Vespera had already sent her demon spiders the furthest they could go, and she had seen a big part of the second floor, explaining that the demons residing there were more powerful than the ones on the ground floor. Nonetheless, they still wouldn’t be a match for our power.

As my companion told us what she had seen through her baby spiders, her eye twitched for a moment with discomfort, making her stop her speech and turn her head towards the stairs.

"I lost a spider..." Vespera muttered.

She explained that one of her demon spiders was going up to the fifth floor of the tower, but it was suddenly destroyed by something that Vespera couldn’t see. Still, the demonic energy she sensed was quite powerful.

The higher we went into the castle, the stronger the demons would be. That was something we knew before we barged inside. However, knowing precisely at what point the demons received a big power-up was also essential for us to strategize a counter.

"Alright, then. Let’s clear the second floor as much as possible and keep moving!" I told my group, who seemed determined to fight, making our way up the long stairway leading to the second floor.
