Chapter 442: Halfway to the Top

As our group kept moving from the 41st floor upwards, we started getting attacked by the ashen-white devils.

There weren’t that many of the ancient devils in general, so it wasn’t a big deal for us to keep advancing, even when we kept getting ambushed every few minutes.

The levels that came after the 41st had the same liminal layout, so I kept using fire magic to mark a few arrows on the walls and ground, which led to the staircase going up.

When we arrived on floor 49th, I sent a voice message to the other groups in the levels under us, and I was glad to know that they were also advancing without much resistance.

Once we found the staircase leading to the 50th floor, I gulped in anticipation, knowing that we would officially be halfway done with the tower. Of course, the big challenge was still a long way above us.

The 50th floor had another abandoned city in it. However, all of the building’s facades looked different from what we had seen in the previous levels, giving them a slightly more regal and elegant look to them. freēwēbnovel.com

Still, the whole floor was abandoned, so it didn’t matter how fancy the place tried to look, as it didn’t affect the sense of dread and eeriness that we felt when we entered.

We could sense strong signals of demonic energy around us, so we knew that we weren’t alone. However, they felt similar to the aura emanating from the ancient fiends, which meant we could take them on without much effort.

As we walked through the desolate street, Vespera released some of her demon spiders to scout the place and look for the next staircase. Meanwhile, Arashi and Frost extruded their dragon wings from their backs and started flying around to do the same.

It didn’t take long for our companions to find the tunnel leading to the staircase, and once they guided us there, we were all quite annoyed when we saw that the stairs were completely covered with the same living flesh we had seen before.

However, now that I knew that the flesh was using MP to move and attack us, it was easier to defend myself against it with my bo while Yoru clenched my mithril dagger between his fangs.

Melina also had her mithril estoc on her waist, so she tagged along with me to take care of the hooded demon controlling the living flesh at the top of the stairs.

"What kind of demons make these weird flesh structures anyway?" I pondered aloud as I stretched, preparing myself.

When I took down the hooded demon that was guarding the Hell-Ring with his "flesh magic," his body disappeared before Jackson and Nessa could look at him, so I never knew what exactly I was fighting against.

I tried describing his appearance to our devil friends, but they couldn’t think of any hooded demons that could create structures of living flesh. Moreover, the fact that the flesh used MP and not demonic energy was the strangest detail about him.

"It’s quite common to find other devils with strange magics that we have never seen before. But I’ve never heard of a demon that used MP instead of demonic energy to cast their spells..." Jackson commented.

"So, you are saying it’s not a devil?" I asked, a bit confused since those were the only beings inside G’Henna’s castle.

Still, Jackson cluelessly shrugged, seemingly as confused as me, so I decided to wave it off for now and focus on clearing the staircase to keep advancing.

Melina, Yoru, and I stood before the fleshy structure for a moment, detailing its nasty appearance as it kept beating like a heart.

We couldn’t really step on it since there was a mix of blood and a slimy substance coating the flesh, making it quite slippery, so we had to use magic to levitate.

As we flew through the center, the flesh started generating large demonic arms that tried to claw and grab us, but our maneuvers while flying had gotten a lot more accurate, so we were able to avoid them.

When one of the arms flew straight at Melina’s face, she pointed her estoc forward and waited for the hand to pierce itself against it, making it dissipate in an instant before it could land a hit on her.

Compared to the first time, it felt much easier to travel through the living flesh, and after two or three minutes of flying and deflecting nasty demon arms, I could see the light at the end of the staircase, prompting me to point my finger at the opening and shoot a thin beam of light.

Right as the beam traveled outside the staircase tunnel, the living flesh trembled and stopped attacking us for a brief moment, so I was sure that my beam had at least distracted the hooded demon at the top.

Relishing the opportunity, the three of us increased our speed and got out of the tunnel in a few seconds, where we found the hooded demon holding his arm after being shot by my light beam.

"This is the devil casting this nasty magic!?" Melina asked.

Just like before, the devil looked like some sort of cadaver, wearing a long hooded robe that shrouded most of his facial features. Still, we could see his dried-up chin peeking at the bottom of his hood.

"What kind of demon are you?" I asked, pointing the tip of my bo at him. However, the demon didn’t answer.

In fact, he didn’t even move. He just stood there and acknowledged my questions without saying anything.

"Can this thing even communicate with us?" Melina pondered.

At that moment, Yoru interjected into the conversation, using his telepathy skill to talk to both of us at the same time.

[This is no devil... This is a human,] Yoru said.

"Huh!?" Melina and I hummed in unison, widening our eyes with disbelief.

Still, after Yoru said that, I took another glance at the hooded figure, and his words made more sense.

The supposed devil didn’t have horns, fangs, or any demonic feature for that matter. It was easy to think that it was simply a type of demon who didn’t have these common characteristics, but if he was a human, then it made more sense.

"I see... So, this was Drakzen’s doing," I muttered, remembering my fight with the demon general in the Northern Empire.

"It’s necromancy..." I continued, sharpening my gaze with anger.
