Zaraki Kenpachi swaggered forward with his blade resting across his shoulder, Yachiru Kusajishi trailing behind him by a few steps.

"Oi! I heard your Squad 11's supposed to be the best fighters in the whole Gotei 13? Doesn't look that way to me! Hurry up and bring your captain out!"

"You arrogant bastard! Watch this!

He who reigns! Mask of flesh and blood, all creation, fluttering wings, that which names itself human! The heat of battle, the turmoil, sweeping south across the sea—march forward! Hadō #31: Shakkahō!"

A seated officer from Squad 11 charged in, fury in his voice as he finished his Kidō incantation. A blazing orb shot from his palm straight at Zaraki.

"Weak! So damn weak!"

Zaraki didn't even bother to dodge or slash it—he barreled through the fireball, scattering it with his body, then swung once, carving a bloody furrow across the man's chest.

"Captain..."

Far off in the distance, Higashi Shuuichi placed a hand dramatically on the hilt of his zanpakutō and looked toward Unohana Retsu beside him.

She, as Squad 4's captain, had already been alerted via Hell Butterfly the moment Zaraki had breached Seireitei. And based on what she'd heard from Shuuichi the last time, she had a rough idea of just how dangerous Zaraki had become.

If she were to fight him with her full strength... half of Soul Society might be reduced to rubble.

As much as her long-dormant bloodlust itched for a real fight, reason still chained her down—so she chose instead to observe quietly from a distance.

"Do you think you can beat him?" she asked, barely glancing at Shuuichi.

He bit his lip, reluctant. "But... Captain..."

"Gikianjō Kenpachi's here."

Unohana turned her gaze toward another direction—the entrance of Squad 11's barracks.

At long last, Gikianjō Kenpachi, the current captain, emerged slowly.

"So you're the brat that's stormed into Seireitei?!"

He leapt onto the surrounding wall, looking down at Zaraki from above with a smug scowl.

Zaraki looked up—at the unmistakable captain's haori, and the boldly painted "11" across the back.

He grinned.

"The captain of Squad 11, huh? Should be stronger than that so-called vice-captain from Squad 4, right?"

In the next instant, Zaraki's suppressed reiatsu exploded outward.

Gikianjō's expression crumbled—too late.

Zaraki's blade was faster.

The swing—born of endless carnage—cleaved upward like a sky-splitting thunderclap.

Gikianjō Kenpachi was launched into the air.

The shock reverberated through his guts and bones.

"Don't get cocky... I'm still... Gikianjō Kenpachi!!"

But Gikianjō wasn't weak. While Zaraki's overwhelming spiritual pressure might terrify someone like Higashi Shuuichi, it couldn't crush a man who'd commanded Squad 11 for decades.

Shikai, Kidō, even Bankai—Gikianjō held nothing back, caring nothing for the fact they were fighting in the heart of Seireitei.

Naturally, the magnitude of the battle began drawing spectators from across the Gotei 13—any captain not occupied elsewhere was making their way to the scene.

That included the captain of Squad 2—Shihōin Yoruichi.

"Lord Shuuichi!"

As Shuuichi stood amid the chaos, watching and tending the wounded, a familiar, excited voice rang beside him.

He turned—and sure enough, there she was. Soi Fon, now a teen, already starting to blossom into the woman she'd become.

"It's been a while, Shōrei... and Captain Shihōin," he replied with a polite smile, shifting his gaze to Yoruichi standing beside her.

Yoruichi gave a casual wave, as if they were old drinking buddies. "Yo~ Shuuichi-kun! You're here too, huh?"

If he hadn't already suspected Kisuke Urahara's hand in all this, Yoruichi's flawless tone might've fooled him.

"Mm. A lot of Shinigami are being seriously wounded by that man called Zaraki, so I figured I'd come help out—treat them here before it gets worse."

"Lord Shuuichi is as gentle as always!" Soi Fon said admiringly, eyes sparkling.

Yoruichi didn't answer, just smiled and nodded, then turned back to watch the battlefield.

By now, the Squad 11 barracks had been reduced to rubble.

Gikianjō Kenpachi was on his knees, zanpakutō fallen beside him, a bloody blade jammed into his chest.

"You're strong... but you're no fun to fight!"

Zaraki Kenpachi stood over him, looking into the fading light of his opponent's eyes, disappointed.

His own wounds weren't much better—Gikianjō had gone down swinging, and that reckless style of his had thrilled Zaraki.

So he'd responded in kind—abandoning defense, going all in. Whoever backed down first, lost.

Unfortunately, Gikianjō didn't last like Higashi Shuuichi had.

He didn't have the tricks Shuuichi did—his Kidō lacked creativity, his tactics were simple.

And he hadn't inherited swordsmanship from both Unohana and Aizen.

Even if Shuuichi hadn't yet mastered those teachings, they were enough—combined with his Zanpakutō and Kidō—to contend with a self-restrained Zaraki.

"I heard from Yachiru that this means I'm your Squad 11 Captain now, yeah?!"

Zaraki yanked his sword free from Gikianjō's corpse, letting the body slump to the ground. He then turned to face the gathered captains with absolute arrogance.

Everyone looked around, uncertain.

It was true—Squad 11's tradition did allow the new captain to rise through killing the last. But this... this was the first time someone had done it like this.

"You've got to be jok—"

Captain Muguruma Kensei of Squad 9 looked ready to shut this madness down—until Unohana's soft but unshakable voice cut across the chaos.

"That's right. By custom, you are now the captain of Squad 11."

Some captains frowned. Others looked thoughtful. But no one objected.

"Hahahaha! Great! I think I saw you before—you're the captain of Squad 4, right? The one with that vice-captain named Higashi Shuuichi! Hey! Send him over to fight me!"

Zaraki Kenpachi looked absolutely pleased with himself.

And now Shuuichi could feel every single eye turning toward him.
