Chapter 77 -77: Surprise

Qiao En’s appearance was innately pure, with a rare hint of charm in her eyes and brows. She acted coquettishly in front of Zhou Jin’an, and Ding Hao couldn’t resist in the moment.

“Okay… okay…”

He said ‘okay’ twice, hurriedly and clumsily lifting Qiao En into a horizontal carry.

“I’m sorry, En’en, I’m so sorry.”

Ding Hao held Qiao En tightly, spreading his legs and running forward.

Qiao En’s slender arms wrapped around Ding Hao’s neck, jostling about in his embrace.

“Let them disperse, I don’t want you getting into trouble because of me.”

She soothed him softly, and Ding Hao was very susceptible to this approach.

“Alright.”

He immediately ordered the people to scatter.

Ding Hao’s punch landed squarely on Qiao En’s shoulder, causing her to break out in a cold sweat from the pain.

Although her body was in pain, she felt a sense of relief within her heart.

The oppressive crowd dispersed, and the siege on the Zhou Residence was finally lifted.

As she left, Qiao En looked back at the place one more time.

Everything had returned to its well-ordered state.

She didn’t see Zhou Jin’an, but she knew that he must be safe.

In the car on the way to the hospital,

Ding Hao, with an embarrassed face, kept apologizing.

“En’en, I’m so sorry, I really didn’t mean to hit you. How about you hit me a few times to vent your anger?”

“Mr. Ding, I’d like to have some quiet for a while, if that’s okay?”

Qiao En’s brows were tightly knit; she was truly in pain.

“Okay, okay, okay, I’ll shut up, I’m shutting up right now.”

Ding Hao stopped talking.

The car went straight to Central Hospital, Ding Hao had contacted the CT scan room, and as soon as Qiao En arrived, she was taken for an examination.

She had a minor fracture in her scapula, and the doctor suggested she be hospitalized for observation.

Ding Hao, as if possessed, stayed by her side, his presence constant.

He was either worried that she was hungry or concerned that she might be thirsty.

Qiao En was so annoyed by him that she pretended to sleep.

In the evening, Ding Hao left after receiving a phone call.

Hearing the sound of him closing the door, Qiao En opened her eyes.

She had had no choice but to use Ding Hao.

She sent a message to Cheng Lu, wanting to know Zhou Jin’an’s condition.

Unexpectedly, not long after the message was sent, Cheng Lu arrived.

He appeared in Qiao En’s hospital room holding fruits, his face sporting several dark bruises.

“Secretary Qiao, are you okay?”

Cheng Lu set down the fruits, his hands hanging by his sides, standing at the foot of Qiao En’s bed.

Qiao En sat up from the bed, forgetting her own condition, and asked, “How is Director Zhou now?”

“Not too good,” Cheng Lu replied in a low, heavy sigh.

“He’s running a high fever, stayed up all night, and passed out once. It’s all been sustained by IVs. With today’s uproar caused by Ding Hao at the Zhou Residence, the public opinion has flared up, and Director Zhou is now facing even greater pressure.”

In fact, not long after Qiao En had left, Zhou Jin’an had fainted again.

Cheng Lu did not dare to mention this to her.

Qiao En’s eyelids drooped, and her fair, delicate hands clenched into fists; she felt a complex mix of emotions in her heart.

“Assistant Cheng, if there’s anything I can do, just say the word.”

Now that she had chosen to stand by Zhou Jin’an’s side again, she was ready to weather the storm with him.

Cheng Lu looked deeply into Qiao En’s eyes and said, “Secretary Qiao, thank you for being willing to stay by Director Zhou’s side.”

“Director Zhou says not to worry about him. Take good care of yourself; he will deal with this mess as quickly as possible and come to see you.”

“He also said that regarding the photo incident, he believes you are innocent. Rest assured, he will get to the bottom of it and clear your name.”

“Oh, and Director Zhou said to keep your distance from Mr. Ding, he’s not reliable.”

Although Qiao En was not a particularly emotional person, in that moment, she felt a warm current swirling in her heart.

At this moment, Zhou Jin’an was caught between a rock and a hard place, not in control of his own fate, yet he still kept her in mind, always considering her needs.

She didn’t want to be a clinging vine, only relying on him.

Zhou Jin’an was in trouble, and she wanted to help share his burdens.

Only, his current situation was fraught with difficulty.

When Zhou Zhendong was alive, Jin’an was not his favored son, and now that he had passed away suddenly, Jin’an would have no place to call his own.

Yao Chuman had given birth to two sons for the Zhou family, both of age now. Qiao En had only met Zhou Ziyan once and had already glimpsed his wolfish ambition. With the mother and sons united, Jin’an was no match for them.

The issue with the Ding family was not Jin’an’s doing, but someone had pinned the blame on him, making it hard for Jin’an to extricate himself.

With all these issues, if Zhou Jin’an wanted peace and safety, he couldn’t avoid a confrontation.

“Cheng Assistant, take good care of Director Zhou; I know what I need to do.”

Qiao En once again concealed her thoughts.

Cheng Lu glanced at his watch; he couldn’t be away for too long. Jin’an was alone at the Zhou Residence, and he was worried.

“Secretary Qiao, Director Zhou cares a lot about you. Don’t let him down at a time like this.”

Cheng Lu’s words were loaded with meaning, which Qiao En understood. She nodded, and Cheng Lu quickly departed.

After Cheng Lu left, Qiao En leaned against the headboard and zoned out for quite some time.

She had waded into this muddy water along with Zhou Jin’an, so what should they do to break the impasse?

When Qiao En pondered things, she had a bad habit—she liked to pull the covers over her head and completely immerse herself in that small world.

But just as she was doing so, Ding Hao returned.

“En’en, wakey wakey!”

He pulled off Qiao En’s blanket, and his handsome face abruptly appeared before her eyes.

“You sleep monster, you’ve slept the whole day; it’s time to wake up.”

He reached out fondly to pinch Qiao En’s nose, but she quickly dodged.

“Is it dark outside?”

Qiao En looked toward the window, intentionally changing the subject.

Ding Hao stood up straight. “Yeah, it’s completely dark now.”

As he spoke, he suddenly pulled out a shocking pink box from his pocket.

Qiao En sensed something was amiss. Pretending not to notice, she threw off the blankets and clutched her stomach, dashing towards the bathroom.

“I’ve got diarrhea.”

She was in a hurry, not even wearing shoes, running barefoot with impressive speed.

“Be careful, En’en.”

Ding Hao’s voice came from behind her, spurring Qiao En to run even faster. She burst into the bathroom and hastily locked the door behind her.

She had an idea of what Ding Hao wanted to do; she had used him, and he was aware, yet he still pulled a stunt like this.

Qiao En hadn’t figured out how to handle the situation; for now, her only option was to flee.

“En’en, how are you feeling? Why is it taking so long?”

Ding Hao’s voice came through the crack of the door.

Qiao En quickly flushed the toilet, “My stomach is upset, I’ll squat for a while longer.”

She employed a stalling tactic.

About five minutes later, Ding Hao seemed to be getting impatient.

“En’en, I’m going out to take a call, alright? Call me if you’re feeling bad.”

His words had just ended when Qiao En heard the sound of the room door opening and closing.

Then, silence fell, not a sound from outside.

Qiao En composed herself for a while, then quickly swung the bathroom door open, ready to make a run for it.

However, the moment the door opened, Qiao En had nowhere to escape to.

“Bang!”

Streamers and fireworks rained down from above, all landing on Qiao En’s head.

Ding Hao, holding a party popper, was as happy as a child.

He was as boisterous as ever.

“En’en, surprised or not? Expect it or not?”
