Chapter 205: Chapter 205: Is it due to Aiden?

On the first day of his appointment, Barnes clearly remembered how Mr. Clark had warned him about Zenith’s absurd, selfish, and ruthless nature, who had always lived like a wild horse on the run, never knowing when to restrain or slow down his pace so that he wouldn’t end up hurting others. From those explanations, Barnes was certain that he was appointed to serve a man who cared for no one else in this world.

But right now, owning that thought with which he came to the Elite Academy was completely polar opposite to the emotions Barnes felt rising inside him. In front of him, there stood a man in love, who was willing to commit any drastic actions only for the sake of his beloved man, and such kind of pure love was one in a million to be found in this peculiar world.

Despite being the son of Dolemort Agastya who was the epitome of fear to the rest of the world, the way Zenith bravely justified his actions made Barnes feel sincerely proud of him.

In such a short span of time, Barnes was quite awestruck to see Zenith change in such a magnificent way and become the Alpha anybody would be proud to be with, erasing his dark twisted past with his own hands. The shift was only possible due to the precious love he had found in a person who showed up in his life like an unexpected rain shower of cold December.

But along with admiring his changes, as a grown-up adult among them, Barnes was bound to be aware of the bitter truth that his actions would invite terrifying storms on the path Zenith had opted to walk on his life...holding the hands of his beloved one.

Barnes exhaled a big sigh, and the irked expression seemed to ease a little, but he furrowed his brows before answering him, "Young Master, of course, I would’ve never advised you against it even if you had let me know about your decision just once. I...am well aware of what it feels to be blessed with a family...because a long time ago, I had lost my own."

His voice grew a bit heavier, depicting the sadness from his tone while a tiny smile curved on him, "That’s why, I had vowed to myself to give my best in preserving someone else’s family...so that... nobody in this world would have to live remorsefully the way I have lived until now. And...knowing how much Mr. Kylian means to you, there’s no way I could’ve ever opposed your decision, young master. But all you had to do was just let me know once...so that I would’ve tackled Boss Clark accordingly when he charged me."

"Wait...Mr. Clark knows about it?" Astonished by his sudden revelation, before Zenith could process it, Barnes nodded his head and made a grimacing expression while telling the facts.

"Yes...and I believe the investment management group of your company must’ve conveyed the news to him since it’s something really big, young master. I believe...your father still isn’t aware of that and most probably for your sake, Mr. Clark will do his best to erase all the documents about the transfer of shares. But..."

"But what?" When his words trailed off with a nervous pause, Zenith impatiently urged him with a deep frown between his thick dark brows, "I had seen a few missed calls from Mr. Clark too, but... never mind, did he lash out at you instead?"

"Hah...Boss Clark most probably chewed me alive if I had been right in front of him." Barnes let out a heavy huff of breath with his pupils getting dilated in concern. Bearing a nervous face, he muttered, "I know it was justified to be furious because he must’ve had a lot of mess to clean up, especially because I didn’t have any idea about what was going on behind the scenes.

"But only if you had let me know a gist about it, I wouldn’t have gotten so anxious to breathe when he erupted his rage on me. In fact, Boss Clark even threatened that he would reinstate me somewhere else and would bring in a different man to be employed under you here, but...I don’t want that to happen, young master. I would really prefer to keep working here... on this campus—"

"Is this because of Aiden?"

"Yes, and I was...HUH!?"

Suddenly Zenith’s unexpected mumble shocked Barnes from his core, almost making him jolt hard as he retreated a few steps back. Rolling his brown eyes with a gaze of disbelief in them, his throat felt parched dry to process the shock of the situation. But he struggled hard to squeeze those words out of him, "W-What...I-I...m-mean...How...H-Huh?"

"There’s no use of hiding it from me anymore, Barnes. You may think of me as a young brat since you’re older, but do you think I didn’t notice how you keep stealing glances at Aiden since the first day you came here?" Zenith held a proud smug face while confronting Barnes, but there was a subtle easiness in his tone to make sure he wouldn’t make him way too uncomfortable with the conversation.

In fact, before Barnes could bring his astonished self to utter a word in defense, Zenith snickered at him, "Do you have a spare cigarette?"

"B-But...s-smoking is against the rules of the Academy here...y-young master! I...I believe it can cause you trouble..." Barnes nervously responded to him, enduring his anxious heartbeat which was getting too fast as if it was about to jump out of his chest any time.

"Since when do I look like the one who follows any of the rules in the Academy?" Realizing his nervousness, Zenith mischievously wanted to tease him a little more as he murmured, "If you do not want to comply then shall I go tell Aiden how a big, adult guy like you has been secretly eyeing him all this time?"

"I...have a few spare cigarettes." Reluctantly admitting to his words, Barnes had no other choice but to follow Zenith at the end of the yard where most of the students used to smoke behind a giant pillar of the building they were close by. Not many people were aware of the secret smoking area, but it has been always impossible to prohibit Zenith from doing anything he had set his mind once.

Upon giving him a cigarette, Barnes even lit it up with his lighter, still bearing that anxious grimace on him. He was fidgeting hard to know from where Zenith drew that conclusion about him, or was he truly intending to tell Aiden anything about it?

But not teasing him anymore, Zenith released a heavy puff of smoke when he muttered in a genial tone, "Don’t worry. I wasn’t serious about telling Aiden about it, because there’s no way I would let him find you creepy when I know your intentions aren’t."

Finally getting the assurance, Barnes exhaled a big sigh and fiddled his fingertips, he mustered the courage to ask him, "M-May I know...how did you...k-know about it, y-young master?" freēnovelkiss.com

"Hmm, well, you can say, I am born smarter." With a wink, Zenith seemed a bit relaxed from his tone when leaning against the giant pillar, he conversed in a gentle manner, "Even though Mr. Clark had appointed you here to serve under me, but I had to test if you were truly faithful to me or just a mere spy spent by the President to have me under his watch.

"Thus, I deployed a few men from the National Spy Intelligence Bureau to find out every details about you, Barnes. I had meant to keep this as a secret from you initially, but now that you’ve managed to earn my faith on you, I thought this will be the right time to tell you about it."

Heeding his answer, Barnes was left awestruck for a moment, as it was hard for him to process the truth. With his orbs staring wide open at Zenith’s relaxed expression, his face turned a bit surly when he pondered on his own, ’Did I hear it correctly? He deployed members from the National Spy Bureau... which mostly investigates wanted criminals or spies all over the world to find information about a mere nobody like me. Is he really crazy...or...maybe after staying with him all this time...I have started to find his abnormal activities to the normal ones.

’Damn...I think I am in need of smoke too...but I really don’t want to do it in front of him...’

"I know you must be thinking of me as a crazy guy, and it’s normal to think like that."

As if Zenith was perfectly assessing his inner thoughts, he let out another big puff of smoke before a small sad smile curved his dark onyx eyes when he muttered, "But...in this life, I have been backstabbed way too many times by those people I had ever tried to put my faith in. That’s why, before letting you stay by my side...I had to find more information about you.

"But...instead it truly shocked me the information I obtained about you. By the term losing your family...you meant that for Aiden, right?"
