Chapter 49: 49: Deadly Desire

---

Kai didn’t respond to his comment and they continued the journey. The forest around them was alive with beauty and peril. Sunlight filtered through ancient boughs, casting patterned shadows on the ground.

Every leaf glistened with dew, and the earth beneath was soft and yielding. Yet these same elements harbored hidden threats, a rock loose on a narrow trail, a crevice that yawned unpredictably, and the chill of an unexpected gust. With each challenge, Kai’s inner system recorded a quiet acknowledgment of survival. But for now, only his determination and the promise of the mission mattered.

Captain Darius, ever the silent sentinel, kept watchful eyes on the group. His glances were icy, brief, calculated, and filled with hidden designs. He moved with the precision of one who planned betrayals even as he led his team.

Kai’s mind burned with a mixture of fierce resolve and a secret vow: someday, he would overcome this treachery. Yet today, the sole focus was on the journey. The first steps into a wild that promised both untold danger and untapped power.

Suddenly a system notifications popped into his mind,

[Ding! New mission: Find the star crystal mine and collect ten star crystals.

Reward: Water movement detection. (Note: will be added to predator instinct.) ]

With a sarcastic face Kai says, "System aren’t you a bit late to issue a new mission. But it’s a good reward, my predator instinct doesn’t use any aura. You should give me more skills like predator instinct."

The system didn’t respond to him. The journey continued. By midday, the forest path opened to reveal a sloping hillside where the cool wind carried the soft murmur of distant waterfalls.

The terrain grew rougher, the stone beneath hardened with age and the scars of countless battles. The team climbed steadily, driven by the collective hope that the star crystal mine lay somewhere beyond the next ridge.

Together they navigated the rocky outcrops and narrow ledges, their efforts a quiet symphony of mutual reliance and even as internal tensions simmered silently. Kai was at the back.

Kai couldn’t stop thinking about Princess Mia. Her words, her presence, her beautiful body, those curves, the intimate moments they shared. It all lingered in his mind like a flame refusing to die out.

His body felt hotter than usual. His muscles tensed at random. A strange craving pulsed through his veins, a hunger he couldn’t explain.

"What’s happening to me?" he muttered, stumbling to a stop on a rock. "Why does my body feel like it’s on fire? Why can’t I stop thinking about her?"

He clenched his fists, trying to control the strange surge coursing through his limbs. "System! Is this some side effect from my skill Lustre’s mark? What the hell is wrong with me?"

A calm chime answered in his head.

[Ding! System Notification – Dear Host, this has nothing to do with your system,or your skills. This is... a biological issue. It’s an ant thing.]

Kai blinked. "A what?"

[Explanation: In your species, male ants often die shortly after mating. Their role is to pass on their essence to the queen during the mating ritual. Once complete, their life purpose is considered fulfilled and their bodies shut down. Female ants can give birth to millions of new ants.]

His eyes widened. "Wait, wait, WAIT. Are you saying... if I had mated with Mia, I’d be dead?!"

[Correct. However, you’re lucky. You only experienced light physical contact. Your instincts were triggered, but nothing serious happened. The sensations you’re feeling now are your body’s natural hormonal response. Your body wants to give Mia all of your essence and make lots of babies.]

Kai stared blankly at the system floating window. "So... I almost died from mistakenly touching her.?"

[Yes. And because Princess Mia is a Royal Ant, her aura and biological power are far beyond that of a normal female ant. Her body could drain your essence completely during mating. It’s not something she can control, it’s part of royal nature. Even she may not fully know.]

He sat down, breathing heavily. "That’s insane... I could have died without even knowing it. Being an ant is very scary. That means, I can’t mate with her without dying?"

[Don’t worry host, There is some good news.]

Kai raised a brow. "There is? What’s the good news?"

[Your body reacted well to the encounter. Because you are the monarch Devouring Ant. Your cells are evolving to resist the deadly effects of royal mating. You are here to devour others, not be devoured by others. It will take some time to complete. Once done you will no longer be affected by the fatal consequences. You’ll be... the first of your kind to register the royal ant mating.]

Kai’s mandibles clicked softly. He looked at his hands, still trembling with energy. "So this burning... this craving... it’s not a curse?"

[No, Host. It’s a blessing. You’re adapting. Your cells are Evolving.]

He stared up at the sky, a strange smile tugging at his face. "Princess Mia... I don’t know when my cell’s evolution will be completed. But I know one thing: Our mating will be a legend in making."

The wild, under its relentless scrutiny, seemed to whisper his name, and every shimmering leaf and glistening stone was a silent promise that his destiny was waiting to be claimed.

As the afternoon waned and shadows lengthened, the team sought refuge on a rugged outcrop. They made a modest camp beneath the canopy of old trees, and the quiet of the setting sun mingled with the soft chirps of nocturnal insects.

While the team settled into a tense peace, each ant lost in their own thoughts, Kai sat apart under a gnarled tree. He closed his eyes briefly, letting the tumult of the day subside.

Night fell slowly, wrapping the wild lands in a shroud of soft darkness and whispered winds.

The team’s created a small fire, it was a flickering beacon casting and dancing of shadows over their weary forms.
