A rustle in the undergrowth nearby alerted him. 'Finally,' Lucian thought, a faint smirk touching his lips.
He drew the sleek, dark spear that was his preferred weapon. It felt like an extension of his arm.
From behind a large, fern-covered log, a creature emerged.
It resembled a large wolf, but its fur was a sickly green, and saliva dripped from jaws filled with needle-sharp teeth. Its eyes glowed with a faint, hungry red light.

"Awoooo!"
The wolf snarled, lowered its head, and charged. It was fast for a Level 5 creature, a green blur streaking across the forest floor.
But to Lucian, it was moving in slow motion.
"Swoosh!" Lucian didn't even seem to move his feet. His body flickered, leaving an afterimage where he had stood a fraction of a second before. The Vilefang Wolf snapped at empty air, its momentum carrying it past Lucian's original position.
Before the wolf could even turn, Lucian was already behind it. His spear was a blur. "Thrust!" The spear tip, humming with barely contained energy, punched straight through the back of the wolf's skull. There was a sickening crunch.

A notification flashed in his vision, simple and direct. 10 XP. 5 Kill Points. Pathetic, but it was a start. He didn't pause. His senses flared, detecting more movement nearby.
He moved through the forest like a phantom. Another Vilefang Wolf leaped from the branches of a low-hanging tree.
"Slice!"
Lucian's spear arced upwards, catching the wolf in mid-air, neatly bisecting it. Blood sprayed, painting the leaves crimson.

A third creature, a boar-like beast with thick, leathery skin and small, tusks jutting from its snout, charged head down.

"Boom!" Lucian didn't dodge this time. He met the charge head-on. Instead of using his spear tip, he casually slapped the butt of his spear directly onto the Growler's forehead as it lowered its head. The impact echoed through the trees. The ground beneath the Growler's front feet cracked slightly.
The beast let out a choked squeal, its eyes rolled back, and it collapsed, stunned and its skull likely fractured. A quick, precise thrust finished it off.

In less than five minutes, Lucian had cleared the immediate vicinity. He checked his internal compass, oriented himself, and began moving deeper into the forest, increasing his pace. The 5-kilometer boundary wasn't far. He needed tougher prey.
He jogged forward,
his feet barely seeming to touch the ground. Trees blurred past him. His senses were wide open, mapping the terrain, tracking the energy signatures of nearby life forms. He bypassed weaker creatures, casually slapping his palm and his spear as he easily dispatched them.
Soon, the density of the forest began to change slightly, and the energy signatures felt stronger. He had crossed the 5km mark. Now, the monsters should be around Level 10.
He didn't have to wait long. A heavy, rhythmic stomping sound reached his ears. Ahead, through a clearing, he saw his next target. It was a massive rhinoceros, easily twice the size of an ordinary rhino. Its hide looked like dark, overlapping metal plates, and instead of a normal horn, it sported a wickedly sharp, sword-like blade of bone nearly two meters long on its snout.
[Level 10 Sword-Rhino]
The Sword-Rhino scraped its horn against a large boulder, sending sparks flying. It sensed Lucian's approach and turned its massive head, small, unintelligent eyes fixing on him. It let out a guttural snort, pawed the ground, and charged.
"Boom!" "Boom!" "Boom!"
The ground trembled with its approach. It was a living battering ram, aiming to impale and trample him.
Lucian stood his ground until the last moment. The wind whipped past him as the rhino thundered closer.

The ground shattered and Lucian transformed into a blur, his body moving into afterimages as he easily
sidestepped the charge by a hair's breadth. The rhino roared in frustration as it charged past, its horn gouging a deep furrow in the earth where Lucian had been.
"Bang!"
As the rhino tried to turn its bulky body, Lucian struck. His spear became an extension of his will, moving with blinding speed and precision. "Slice!" His spear twirled through the air like a striking serpent. He didn't aim for the thick hide. He leaped, landing lightly on the rhino's broad back, before the beast could react, he thrust downwards with pinpoint accuracy, aiming for the vulnerable spot at the base of the skull where the spine connected. His spear tip, reinforced with his own energy, punched through hide and bone. "Crack!"
The Sword-Rhino let out one final, shuddering bellow before its legs buckled. It crashed to the ground, shaking the clearing.

Lucian landed gracefully beside the fallen beast, pulling his spear free with a clean motion. 30 XP and 30 Kill Points. Better. Much better. He wiped a non-existent speck of dust from his spear shaft. This was more like it.
He continued his advance, cutting a sharp line through the 10-kilometer zone. He encountered packs of Level 9 Shadow Hounds, their forms flickering in and out of the dim light, but his speed and perception made their stealth useless. Swift thrusts and parries dispatched them quickly. He found a Level 11 Vine-Trap tree, a plant-like monstrosity that tried to ensnare him with thorny vines, but a whirlwind of spear strikes shredded its appendages before it could pose a threat.
