Chapter 34 - 34: Rain and Warmth

At dawn, Caelen and Zira trudged through the forest. The air was cold, and their boots crunched softly on wet leaves.

"Think we'll pick up anything today?" Caelen asked.

"We have to," Zira said. "We can't hunt every day forever."

They continued. The forest was quiet.

Then Zira stopped. "Wait. I hear something."

Caelen listened. There was a faint clucking sound nearby.

They followed it and found a few chickens picking at the ground.

Caelen grabbed some vines. "We'll tie their legs so they can't run."

Together, they caught four chickens. It wasn't easy, but they managed.

"Let's head back," Caelen said. "Rain's coming."

They walked fast, but dark clouds rolled in.

Rain started falling hard. Cold, wet drops soaked through their clothes.

"There!" Caelen pointed at a cave in the distance.

They ran for it.

Within, they were soaked. Zira's garments clung to her body. Caelen's shirt dripped.

He ripped it off and wrung it out. "I hate wet clothes."

Zira turned away, face flushed.

"Do you have something dry?" she asked.

Caelen checked his kit. "Just cloth. No shirts."

He handed her a long strip of cloth. "Here. Wrap up in this."

She nodded and took it, binding herself up.

He tied a cloth around his waist too.

They huddled near the wall. Rain thundered outside.

Zira glanced at Caelen's bare chest, then quickly looked away, cheeks pink.

"This is embarrassing," she muttered.

"Yeah," Caelen said. "At least it's dry in here."

They sat close to stay warm. The cave was silent except for the patter outside.

Zira leaned gently against Caelen's shoulder.

He didn't move. His heart beat faster, but he stayed still.

[System: Mood Buff – Comfortable Warmth +10% Rest Recovery]

Both slowly drifted off to sleep.

Rain stopped.

Zira's eyes opened first. Caelen was still asleep. His shoulder was warm beneath her head.

She looked at his face, quiet and peaceful.

This is your fault Caelen you made me fall in love. now take consequence

After a second, she leaned in and kissed his cheek—quick, soft.

Her cheeks flushed as she pulled back.

She stood and stepped outside. Trees were dripping, but the rain had stopped.

[System: Weather – Rain stopped. Morning: Clear]

Zira stood there for a while, breathing in the fresh air.

Then she went back inside.

Caelen still slept, shirtless, relaxed.

Zira sat beside him again. Her eyes drifted to his chest. She looked away quickly, biting her lip.

She leaned against him once more, resting her head softly on his shoulder.

Something stirred in her chest again.

Not enough...

She kissed him again. On the cheek. Longer this time. Slower.

I'll be selfish just this time

Then she leaned back and closed her eyes beside him.

[System: Affection Level Increased – Zira → Caelen: +1]

Caelen shifted a little, but didn't wake.

Zira smiled to herself.
