Chapter 306: Chapter 306: I Will Definitely Repay What I Owe You

Lin Zhiyi looked toward the source, past Gong Chen, and saw Sang Ran waving.

"Zhiyi," she said with a smile.

Lin Zhiyi nodded and noticed from the corner of her eye that Gong Chen hadn’t ordered coffee but had opted for a cup of hot milk instead.

Someone like Sang Ran who is on medication probably shouldn’t drink coffee.

How thoughtful.

Lin Zhiyi heard the ding of a notification and reached for her coffee.

"I won’t disturb you further."

She turned to leave.

"Lin Zhiyi, drink less..." Gong Chen began, holding the milk, calling after her.

"Third Young Master! Hurry, the rain is getting heavier," Sang Ran called out loudly.

Her voice drowned out Gong Chen’s words, and Lin Zhiyi turned back, looking at him with a puzzled expression.

Just as she was about to hear him continue, she received a call from Sang Li.

"Zhiyi, I’m downstairs, why don’t I see you?"

"I got out to buy a coffee, I’ll be right there."

After hanging up the phone, Lin Zhiyi and Gong Chen exchanged a glance, then turned and walked in different directions as though by tacit agreement.

As she turned the corner, Lin Zhiyi glanced in Gong Chen’s direction.

Sang Ran was smiling as she accepted the milk, her face brimming with happiness.

Lin Zhiyi withdrew her gaze and headed straight for the parking lot.

Elsewhere.

Gong Chen looked at Sang Ran’s smile and emotionlessly got into the car.

Sang Ran looked down at her steaming hot milk, her smile fading.

After getting in the car, she hurriedly explained, "I saw it suddenly started raining hard and was worried you didn’t bring an umbrella, so I asked the driver to come back and wait for you."

Gong Chen swept a glance at the driver.

The driver didn’t dare to look at him.

Gong Chen turned to look at Sang Ran drinking her milk and said indifferently, "Xiao Ran, the car tires are nearly dry; you didn’t even walk. Rest assured, whatever I owe you will be repaid. Don’t do this again."

Sang Ran’s face turned pale, and she spilled half of her milk.

She stammered in embarrassment, "Don’t, don’t talk about repayment, okay? I know what you mean, but I just didn’t want you to misunderstand, and you looked so pale just now, so..."

"Hmm."

Gong Chen looked at her pallor, realizing the rest was unnecessary to discuss.

He turned to the car window, fingers caressing his wedding ring, his expression unreadable.

Seeing this, Sang Ran raised her other hand to cover her own wedding ring.

Gong Chen went to the company, and as Sang Ran watched his retreating figure, she knew he would not return to the Gong Mansion that night.

...

Lin Zhiyi had not yet reached the parking lot when she saw Sang Li come to pick her up.

Sang Li folded his umbrella and naturally took hers, putting his arm around her.

Lin Zhiyi took a sip of her coffee and appeared to comment casually, "Is the old man seriously ill?"

Sang Li pressed his lips together and said, "Do you want the truth or a lie?"

Hearing this, Lin Zhiyi looked at him skeptically.

Truth or lie?

Sang Li sighed slightly and said, "The old man is probably not sick."

"Not sick? Then why is he pretending to be ill?" Lin Zhiyi asked in surprise.

"What do you think?" Sang Li looked deeply at Lin Zhiyi.

Lin Zhiyi paused, knowing the answer but not wanting to mention that person’s name.

After a few seconds of thought, Sang Li said indifferently, "From a boyfriend’s point of view, I don’t want to speak for him, but we both know he’s not an utterly reprehensible person; it’s just the pressure of his position. Today he caused the old man to lose face, naturally, the old man would want to reprimand him."

"The news of the old man being hospitalized doesn’t really affect you and your mother much; instead, it might provoke the Gong Family elders to pressure Third Young Master even more."

The downpour raged, pitter-pattering loudly on the umbrella.

Lin Zhiyi could no longer make out Sang Li’s words; she just clutched the coffee in her hand.

But the warmth from the paper cup couldn’t warm her icy palms.

A moment later, Sang Li quietly looked at her and reminded her, "We’ve arrived."

Lin Zhiyi came back to her senses, nodded, and said, "Yeah, let’s go."

She reached for the car door, only to be pulled back by Sang Li.

"Zhiyi, it’s okay, don’t deliberately suppress yourself, I know you need time."

"No, you really misunderstood, I just don’t want to get involved with the Gong Family’s affairs anymore," Lin Zhiyi earnestly said.

Sang Li hummed in response, holding the door frame to let her get into the car first.

After returning, Lin Zhiyi still had to prepare for the interview that night, so she did not ask Sang Li to stay.

He didn’t leave immediately but stood in front of her and slowly bowed his head.

Lin Zhiyi knew what he wanted to do and, out of nervousness, subconsciously raised her hand to block him.

But then reconsidering that he was her boyfriend, she let her hand fall.

Sang Li paused for a moment, then kissed her forehead: "Good luck."

Lin Zhiyi smiled and nodded, then watched him leave.

Once home, she sat on the sofa in a daze.

Her mind was in chaos, always recalling the scene of her standing in front of the coffee machine with Gong Chen.

Although she kept ignoring it, she couldn’t shake off the solemn expression on the man’s face.

It was only when the alarm on her phone reminded her to prepare for the interview that she realized she had forgotten to change her shoes before entering the house.

Wet footprints trailed behind her, half-dried imprints on the floor.

She hurriedly took off her shoes and fetched a cloth to wipe the floor, but the water stains were difficult to clean.

After several wipes, faint outlines could still be seen.

For some reason, she felt very irritated and threw the cloth on the floor before turning to enter her room to review the prepared materials.

Fortunately, she managed to compose herself before the interview.

The whole interview process was very pleasant, and the other party was quite conversational.

They kept complimenting Lin Zhiyi on her beauty, generously using words that made her feel a little embarrassed.

After the interview, they discussed some design ideas. In addition to being teachers, both of them had worked for well-known brands with impressive resumes.

Even if Lin Zhiyi wasn’t accepted, she felt fortunate to chat with two such female designers.

One of the women expressed her admiration: "You and your boyfriend must be very romantic and loving."

Boyfriend?

Lin Zhiyi paused briefly, her mind immediately turning to Sang Li.

He really played his part well, not even telling her about such a significant matter.

She thought it suspicious she had waited so long without news, only to suddenly have an interview opportunity.

"Thank you."

Lin Zhiyi responded happily, already thinking about what extravagant meal to treat Sang Li to.

To her surprise, the other woman laughed and said: "Your boyfriend is really very handsome, just not fond of smiling. If he smiled more, he would be even more handsome."

Since the interview was over, they casually chatted for a bit.

Lin Zhiyi’s smile stiffened as if to confirm something, she took out her phone and pointed to Sang Li’s photo: "Is it him?"

"No, no, although this gentleman is also quite nice, he is different from the one we saw in the video."

At these words, Lin Zhiyi clenched her phone, her finger slipped, and Gong Chen’s photo appeared.

"It’s him."

"Isn’t he your boyfriend? He understands you very well and interpreted your work accurately. It was his explanation that let us see your work," they said.

Lin Zhiyi shook her head in embarrassment.

"No, he is... a relative."

The two across from her felt slightly awkward, chatted for a bit more, and then let her wait for a notice before hanging up.

Lin Zhiyi walked out of the room. By now, over time, no trace could be seen on the floor.

Out of sight, out of mind indeed.

She picked up her phone again and looked at Gong Chen’s photo, tapping it twice.

Delete?

Yes.

...

Gong Mansion.

Sang Ran had just gotten out of the car when a maid came over to greet her.

"Miss Sang, President Wen and Miss Ye have arrived."
