Chapter 73 - blood will call blood

The forest had never been this quiet.

Not when they were running. Not when they were hiding. Not even when their mother first opened her eyes and whispered their real names. But now, as they stood in the circle Cain drew with his blade, the world seemed to hold its breath.

Selene leaned against a boulder, her breath shallow. She hadn't healed yet, not completely. The fight three nights ago had drained her, and her powers had left her body sore and trembling. But she refused to sit out. Not now. Not when Cain stood at the center, bloodied palms open to the sky.

"You don't have to do this alone," Leo said, his hands shoved into his jacket pockets, eyes narrowed. "Dad—if that's what we still call him—wants you to break first. He's waiting for you to go dark."

Cain glanced at him. His jaw clenched. "He already broke me. That's how I know I can survive it."

Eren dropped beside the fire pit, flipping a blade between his fingers. He looked up at the girl they had rescued—the one who had delivered the message about their father. She hadn't spoken since then, only watched. Observed. Like she wasn't sure whether she belonged.

"Name?" Eren asked.

The girl hesitated. "Azra."

Leo lifted a brow. "Demon name?"

Azra shrugged. "That or what my mother screamed before she was dragged into the dark."

Selene gave her a nod. That was enough.

The air shimmered. Cain knelt, pressing his blood into the glyphs carved into the dirt. The entire circle lit up with red-gold flame.

"He's listening now," Cain muttered. "We have ten minutes before something comes."

Selene stepped forward. "Then we don't waste time."

She reached out, cupping Cain's face in her hand. "Whatever happens, whatever he shows you, remember that you're not him. You never will be."

Cain looked at her like she was the only thing keeping him grounded. Then, as the fire surged upward, he closed his eyes and let himself fall into the flames.

Inside the flame, time bent.

Cain opened his eyes to find himself standing in their childhood home—but it was wrong. Everything was twisted. The hallway stretched too long. The walls bled shadow.

And at the far end stood a man with black horns curling backward, his arms wide.

"My son," the Devil said, his voice silk and sin. "You finally came home."

Cain said nothing.

"You wear your scars like armor," the Devil murmured. "But I see through it. You're mine. Every flicker of anger. Every violent thought. It sings to me."

Cain smiled grimly. "Then I hope it deafens you."

The Devil laughed.

He stepped forward. Cain held his ground.

"You know they'll turn on you," the Devil said. "The girl, the brothers. Even your mother. I made her, too, remember? I built this bloodline from ash."

Cain's fist clenched. "They're nothing like you."

"You're wrong. They're worse."

The fire blazed, but Cain didn't break. Not this time. He turned his back on the voice, on the memory, on the face that haunted every dream.

And when he opened his eyes again, Selene was the first thing he saw.

Cain stumbled out of the circle, coughing smoke. Leo caught him.

"Well?" Eren asked.

Cain stood. His face was pale, but his eyes were burning.

"He's weaker than he wants us to believe," Cain said. "He's buying time. Something's keeping him locked."

Their mother's voice came from the shadows. "Me."

They turned.

She was standing, tall and graceful, her white hair blowing in the wind, eyes glowing faintly.

"I sealed him before you were born," she said. "And I used my life to feed that seal. But it's breaking."

Selene stepped toward her. "Can we reforge it?"

Their mother shook her head. "No. You must finish what I could not."

Azra finally spoke. "You'll need all the siblings. All of us."

Cain looked at them all.

"Then we find them," he said. "And we end this. Together."

The wind howled as if in agreement. And the fire didn't go out.

It only burned brighter.
