Chapter 79 - echoes of the fallen

The night air was thick with tension. The ruins of Aethermoor, once a sanctuary of light and ancient power, now seemed to pulse with a low hum—alive and aware of the bloodlines within its stone.

Cain couldn't sleep. He sat with Selene still resting beside him, her breathing soft and rhythmic. She had exhausted herself completely, and even now her body trembled in her sleep from the aftershocks of the power she'd unleashed days ago. He gently wrapped his coat tighter around her and stood.

Leo was wide awake too, perched on a broken column, eyes scanning the distant tree line.

"Do you feel that?" Cain asked in a low voice.

"Yes," Leo murmured. "It's like... echoes. Voices. They're not here physically, but something is watching us."

Eren emerged from the shadows near the wall. "Our father."

The name hit the air like a dropped blade. Cain's hands curled into fists instinctively.

"He's calling to us," Eren added. "Not with words, but with presence."

Cain's voice was cold. "I don't care if he's bleeding in the next realm. He doesn't get to summon us."

But Leo frowned, uneasy. "What if he's not summoning us to harm us? What if he's... scared?"

Cain shot him a look. "Of what?"

"Of her." Leo's gaze flicked to Selene.

They turned back to where she lay wrapped in worn blankets. Even in sleep, energy curled around her fingers—raw, unfocused, terrifying. Ever since the day she collapsed after shielding them with her power, something inside her had changed.

Eren nodded solemnly. "Whatever gift the Ancients left in her—it's awakened now. And it's stronger than anything we've seen."

Just then, the ruins trembled.

Not from inside, but from something... under them.

Selene jolted awake, gasping. "He's here," she whispered.

Cain rushed to her. "Who? Our father?"

"No," she said, eyes wide with fear. "The Hollow King. He's using our father's blood as a beacon. He's coming."

Leo leapt from the column. "We have to move!"

"No," Selene said, her voice stronger than it had been in days. "We fight."

"You can't," Cain objected. "You're not fully recovered."

"I may not get another chance," she whispered, gripping his hand. "I saw it... in the dream. If we don't stop him now, he will drag this world into the void."

Suddenly, the sky above cracked—not like thunder—but like glass under pressure.

A dark figure descended from the clouds—massive, cloaked in a swirling storm of shadows. His face, indistinguishable, but his voice cut through the bones of the ruins.

"My sons... my daughter... you will kneel before the true heir of the underworld."

Cain stepped forward, eyes blazing red. "You are no father of mine."

With a sudden flick of his wrist, Cain summoned twin blades made of obsidian fire. Leo raised both arms, and lightning pulsed through his veins as the sky answered him. Eren's body lit up with ancient runes as time itself seemed to slow around him.

Selene stood too, her body still shaky, but her spirit unwavering.

The Hollow King laughed. "You would pit yourselves against me? Against the power that made you?"

"No," Selene said, stepping forward, glowing with radiant light. "We fight not because we can win... but because it is right."

Then, chaos erupted.

Cain lunged first, blades flashing, striking against an unseen forcefield that sent him crashing back into stone. Leo roared as he called down bolts of lightning, splitting the sky in half. Eren bent time to intercept incoming shadow strikes, shielding Selene as she gathered her strength.

Their mother emerged then, her cloak tattered, her body wounded—but her eyes sharp.

"Children," she said. "Now!"

Selene rose fully, light blazing from her like a second sun. She screamed as the energy burst from her, lighting up the ruins. The Hollow King staggered, his form flickering.

And then—he vanished.

The air went still.

Their mother collapsed.

Selene fell into Cain's arms.

The ruins groaned.

And from the shadows, a whisper echoed: "This is only the beginning."
