Silas, restless and impatient, finally decided to speak up, breaking the silence with his usual tone of mock nonchalance.
"You know," he began, his voice louder than necessary, "right after we saw what happened to you, we decided to head back to the base. I was completely against it, of course. But since everyone seemed so adamant, I had no choice."
He paused for effect, watching as everyone turned toward him. "But I wasn’t the one who suggested it."
Gunther’s brow furrowed, curiosity piqued. "Hmm, right. So who did suggest it?"
Before Gunther could even finish asking his question, Silas was already quick to provide an answer, his tone sharp and accusing. "Him." He gestured toward Dave with an exaggerated sweep of his hand. "It was him."
Dave, unaffected by the sudden spotlight on him, simply shrugged, his expression unchanged. He had no reason to feel defensive. He had made the decision that was best for everyone’s survival, and if Gunther needed clarification, he was more than happy to explain.
"I did," he said, his voice steady. "It was the only logical thing to do. We needed to get out of the danger zone, regroup, and think things through. There was no way we were going to just sit around and wait for another attack."
Who would have thought Gunther would still be alive? Against all odds, the group member’s survival is the main priority , it doesn’t matter if they stop the expedition, they needed to be alive to do that. And in the end, his decision to head back to the casino base, to take that desperate chance, was the best option they had after one of their own had been killed.
The rest of the group seemed to accept this explanation without question, understanding the necessity behind Dave’s decision. But Silas, standing on the edge of the group, fumed quietly. ’He always does this. Always gets the praise, always takes charge. Well, we’ll see how long that lasts.’
The tension between Dave and Silas simmered beneath the surface, and although some of the members didn’t notice, Gunther could see the infighting that was going on between the two males. And that had caused him to burst into a loud laughter.
Silas, standing at the edge of the group, narrowed his eyes. ’Was Gunther laughing because of what he had done... or what Dave had done?’ The uncertainty gnawed at him. Was the laughing a jest thrown at him, or Dave? The question bounced around his mind like an unwelcome echo, and he hadn’t hesitated to ask.
Although Gunther was an adult of about 35 years, Silas wasn’t that old, as he was aged 26 years old, and lastly Dave was 19, the youngest of them.
"Why are you laughing?" Silas asked, his tone sharp, his curiosity now mingled with annoyance.
Gunther, still grinning, didn’t hesitate. "That’s because he’s awesome."
"Awesome? Who’s awesome?" Silas asked, his confusion growing, but Gunther only smiled wider without responding, as if the answer was obvious to everyone but him.
Then, as if the laughter had been a warm-up, Gunther stopped laughing, his eyes locking onto Dave. "You’re not just strong, but you also have the mind of a leader. I’m glad you were able to convince everyone to escape before anyone else got caught by those beasts. It shows that you can be trusted, even more than some senior executives." He paused for a moment, his words intentionally directed at silas.
But he realized that his IQ was too low to comprehend something like that, so he decided to mention his name, so he’d be aware of his statement.
"I’m sorry that Silas gave you a very hard time, but that’s part of what you face as a leader."
Dave gave a modest nod, a small but appreciative smile forming on his lips. "Thanks."
Gunther smiled back, clearly relieved that his words had found a place to land. But as he looked at Dave, something shifted in Silas’s gut. His grip tightened at his sides, his face flushed with a growing sense of rage that he was desperately trying to control.
’What the hell is it with this guy? What has he done to make everyone like him so much? And why is Gunther apologizing to him on my behalf?
"I have to say something Silas. I know you don’t understand much about how life works, due to your condition, but Dave has displayed a true feat that only a leader could show. I’m sorry, but Dave’s decision to vacate everyone back to the base was the right option." Gunther said.
Silas fingers dug into the fabric of his shirt, and his fists clenched as his mind spiraled. ’Is this some kind of joke? Gunther, even Gunther, has taken a great liking to Dave. Why? What did Dave do to make everyone think he’s some kind of leader?’ Silas gritted his teeth, trying to keep his face neutral, but the weight of his frustration was heavy on his chest.
Silas wasn’t the only one struggling with their emotions. From the corner of his eye, he caught Tasha staring at him. The way her eyes lingered on him felt... strange. A bit too focused, too intense. His discomfort mounted, but before he could dwell on it, he quickly turned his attention back to the group, trying to push the strange feeling down.
But Tasha’s gaze didn’t waver, her eyes studying him as if she saw something Silas couldn’t understand. He faxed back at her and whispered the word ’what’ but Tasha just took her gaze away from him.
When Gunther had mentioned that Silas didn’t have much experience about the world due to his condition. This was because of his situation as a mentally ill patient. One minute he may act like a normal person, the next, his mental illness could start.
But to stop this mentally affected part of him, a drug had been administered for him to take anytime he starts to feel different or distance from reality. It is a sign that he was drifting into his Ill state, and the drug was effective in stopping it.
To Tasha, this was the perfect subject for her to use and dispose off. And the fact that he hated Dave so much, would convince him into doing whatever task she tells him to do, as long as it involves Dave. Now her next step was to meet with him and talk him into accepting her offer.
