Chapter 260 - 260 ⤞ Desperate Situation

"Huh?!" Bete burst out cursing, "You're saying this thing is a Spirit? This thing?!"

His agitation was understandable — the monster before them was incredibly ugly, completely at odds with their image of Spirits.

Spirits, or Fairies.

{T/N: Although there is no distinction in Danmachi's official terminology, they refer to the same species but with different meanings in their names. And you'll understand as you read.}

They were among the most iconic fantasy characters in heroic tales. Legend told that in ancient times, they formed contracts with select humans, helping them grow and obtain tremendous power.

These chosen ones invariably became Heroes, leaving behind countless moving legends.

The Spirits who aided them were said to possess captivating appearances — beautiful, elegant, pure, and powerful. Almost any positive word could describe these Fairies, perhaps even to the point of idealization.

Yet before them stood a massive flower-type monster, supported by bloated stems, with numerous dancing petals that served as tentacles.

Its flower crown had fully bloomed, split in two and hanging on either side like wing decorations. From the center of the pistil emerged the upper body of a feminine form, three meters tall.

Utterly hideous! Unlike the previously un-evolved flower monsters, it had complete facial features and could even speak!

This hideous, filthy, nauseating giant flower monster, with its wild demonic dance, shattered their beautiful concept of Spirits.

That wasn't an exaggeration — it truly made people uncomfortable to look at.

The gap between expectation and reality was simply too wide.

Even Tiona, obsessed with the Argonauta tales, was devastated. Too shocked to speak, she could only stare blankly at the menacing giant flower monster before her.

It had destroyed an innocent girl's fantasy.

"Finn!"

"Ah, I know!"

Riveria's shout snapped Finn from his brief daze, and he quickly assumed his commanding role.

But before he could give orders, Ais uncharacteristically rushed forward, charging straight toward the giant flower monster without hesitation!

Something about these monsters made her impulsive, completely unlike her usual cool demeanor.

"Damn it! Everyone spread out and cover Ais!"

That was all Finn could command.

"Understood!" x N

Whether to protect their Familia member or to defeat the monster and clear the floor, the expedition team members wouldn't let Ais charge to her death.

Within minutes, everyone had entered battle formation.

Lefiya and Riveria began chanting spells from the rear. Raul and Aki stood guard with magic swords, protecting the two mages and defeating any approaching insect-type monsters.

Adam was no exception. After catching his breath, he too charged in recklessly.

Yet he held back his full power — this was reality, not a game. Friendly fire was a real concern. Going all out would harm his allies fighting alongside him.

Still, he unleashed a storm, coordinating with Ais as they charged toward the half-woman form in the flower monster's pistil.

Dense tentacles blocked their path, attacking from all directions, blotting out the sky and forming an impenetrable plant wall.

Their movements synchronized perfectly as they both chose their most penetrating techniques. Adam's breathing technique even surpassed Ais's in penetrating power.

Yet it proved useless. The plant wall's surface showed surprising resilience — neither could break through.

"Tch."

Spent and with no other choice, the two landed on its trunk and slowly descended to the ground.

"Finn! Use fire! Burn it all!" Riveria raised her staff, preparing to cast fire magic.

Plants were naturally weak to fire — it was the logical choice.

But Finn stopped her.

"Wait! My thumb won't stop twitching." He rubbed it unconsciously, then shouted with an alarmed expression, "Scatter quickly! Something's coming!"

Just as he finished speaking, the monster at the floor's center made its move!

A massive magic circle expanded beneath it, encompassing the entire floor!

Arise, flames. Rage, rage, rage.

Vortex of fire. The crimson wall. Hellfire's roar. May the ardor of the gale plunge the world into grief and misery.

The sky shall burn. The earth shall ignite. The seas shall boil. The fonts shall churn. The mountains shall erupt. All life shall turn to ash.

May the lives of the great ones serve as atonement for the coming choler and grief. Your envoy beseeches you, Salamander.

Incarnate of fire.

Queen of flame!

The monster was chanting! Magic power swirled around it as danger loomed.

"It can actually chant?!"

"A monster that can chant? Impossible!"

"And such a long incantation!"

With its massive body, countless tentacles, and now magic abilities, the expedition team faced an unprecedented crisis.

"Damn it! Riveria, maintain the barrier!" Finn commanded.

The others swiftly gathered around Riveria, fending off approaching monsters as they assembled into formation.

Dance around spirit of the atmosphere, lord of light.

Contract with the guardian of the forest, and envelop us with the song of the land.

Surround us become a great barrier of forest light and protect us.

My name is Alf!

Riveria focused on preparing her magic — specifically Via Shilheim, her strongest defensive spell!

Being the strongest naturally came with limitations. The spell required an extremely long chanting time, and maintaining the barrier demanded enormous magical power. Even then, it might not withstand the monster's magic.

However, they had no choice.

Via Shilheim

Whether out of courtesy or not, the monster waited until Riveria completed her defensive barrier before releasing its rain of magic.

But its power was immense!

Firestorm

Fireballs plummeted from the sky, hammering the barely ten-meter-wide barrier and causing violent tremors that made it crack.

Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!

Though clouds of dust rose from the impacts, those within the barrier remained unharmed.

Yet the monster's magic showed no signs of stopping — the rain of fire continued endlessly!

Watching the barrier repeatedly break and heal, everyone grew worried.

Riveria was reaching her limit!

If the desperately maintained barrier were to break, they would all die under the raging storm of super magic!

"Excuse my rudeness." Adam approached Riveria from behind, gently placing his right hand on her back.

"What are you doing, Adam?" Finn asked without stopping him — a clear sign of his trust.

Adam didn't answer, but his next action revealed why.

Hum—

His right hand, pressed against Riveria's back, released a brilliant white light that enveloped her entire body.

"This... this is rapid magic power recovery?!" Riveria gasped.

The magic power she had been rapidly consuming was indeed recovering quickly, matching the rate of consumption!

She couldn't help but be amazed.

Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!

The monster's magic hadn't ceased, fireballs still raining from the sky and striking the barrier. However, with sufficient magic power as support, the fireballs could no longer shake it.

When the monster's magic finally ceased, everyone let out a brief sigh of relief.

But!

"Wait! It's not over!" Finn's warning instantly put them back on edge.

The magic hadn't stopped! The monster was chanting again!

The long chant and massive magic circle appeared once more — but now its chanting speed was twice as fast!

"No way!"

"Consecutive chanting?!"

"And so fast!"

Before they could recover, a massive purple fireball howled down from the sky toward them.

Boom!

It struck the barrier head-on.

Though the barrier shattered, it instantly repaired itself. Riveria's beautiful face contorted with strain — she was clearly struggling to maintain it.

But it wasn't over!

The monster's chanting continued — this was parallel casting!

Short spells wove between the longer ones as accelerated chanting summoned a relentless rain of fire, crushing down upon their tiny safe haven.

"It's over."

"Damn it! Look at that!"

"Monster!"

Following Bete's gesture, they saw the horrifying truth: while casting magic, the monster was absorbing power from the insect-type monsters, constantly replenishing itself!

Even with Adam and Riveria's combined strength, they couldn't outlast a monster with an endless supply of magic power.

Everyone's fighting spirit crumbled. None could find the courage to resist.

Major crisis!
