Surprise Marriage to a Billionaire-Chapter 418: To Uncover the Full Truth
Chapter 418: To Uncover the Full Truth
Rain stayed by Alexander’s side at the hospital, watching over him as he remained unconscious. Dr. Lambert had given him something to flush the drug out of his system. What Carla had given him was a version of the oxytocin drug, but stronger, designed to cause hallucinations.
While she sat beside his bed, Rain received updates on the situation. She also watched the news in their VIP room and learned that the President had passed out. She felt a pang of sympathy for the old man, but there was no way she would let Carla off the hook for what had happened.
Not after they uncovered that Carla was the one Rico’s man had contacted.
As Rain sat in thought, Alexander began to stir. Slowly, his eyes opened, and he groggily glanced around.
"You’re finally awake," Rain said with a gentle smile, relief flooding her chest.
Alexander groaned. "Ugh, that drug is really something. I thought I was going to lose it."
He weakly attempted to sit up, but Rain quickly moved to help him, adjusting him so he was more comfortable. She sat beside him, brushing her fingers across his cheek in a comforting gesture.
"You did great," she said softly. "Carla is now being questioned, and Brandon confirmed her detention. Eric has already filed charges against her. Clifford also succeeded in leaking all the video footage."
Alexander chuckled lightly, a tired grin spreading across his face. "Wow, you’re pretty terrifying when it comes to your enemies."
Rain raised an eyebrow, a playful glint in her eyes. "Only when they deserve it." Rain’s expression hardened slightly as she continued to stroke Alexander’s cheek.
"It’s you who still did the final execution. I just simply helped out," Rain said with a grin. She leaned back in her chair as she recalled the events. She had told Alexander that Carla might still try to make a move and the event tonight could be a perfect opportunity for her. To make sure, she coordinated things with Sebastian together with Alexander to ensure strict security and had enough camera footages in place in the hotel.
They also discovered that Carla had booked a room in the hotel where the event was set to take place well in advance. Not only that, but she had also arranged an exclusive interview with select reporters in that same room.
It might have seemed like a simple publicity move, but Rain had a bad feeling about it. Trusting her instincts, she asked Brandon to have the room bugged, just in case. It was illegal, but at the very least, it provided them with enough evidence to sway public opinion against her.
Carla’s greatest weapon had always been her public image, using her well-known status to manipulate situations in her favor. Now, with solid proof of her scheming, that advantage was slipping from her grasp.
Alexander had assured her he would handle it. She never expected him to act so swiftly, though to the point that he’d mobilized police officers under Brandon’s lead for a quick arrest, and even involved the media to ensure that Carla’s grandfather, the powerful president, wouldn’t dare intervene to help her.
Those commentaries and interviews in the news? All part of Alexander’s backup plan for the worst-case scenario. Rain chuckled softly, impressed. "I guess you were really prepared for anything."
"Carla should have been taught a lesson the moment she leaked that contract," Alexander stated, his voice steady but cold. "But since no harm was done, I extended leniency to her, out of respect for her parents. Yet, she still didn’t stop after that incident. Now, I’ll make sure she won’t be able to harm you ever again."
Rain couldn’t stop the emotions surging through her as she leaned in to kiss Alexander. Just as their lips were about to deepen the kiss, a loud cough interrupted them.
Startled, Rain quickly pulled away, her face burning.
"I’m sorry, I should-"
"It’s fine, Dr. Lambert," she muttered sheepishly, realizing that the doctor wasn’t alone. His team stood behind him, barely holding back their giggles. Neither she nor Alexander had even noticed them entering the room.
Dr. Lambert cleared his throat and stepped forward to check Alexander’s condition. After a quick assessment, he nodded. "You’ll be perfectly fine in a few hours, but stay here until then. Also, there are reporters outside, and the doctor who initially gave you first aid is currently giving a statement."
Rain suddenly remembered something and asked, "So... the erotoxin drug could be flushed out too, right?"
Dr. Lambert hesitated for a brief second before giving her an awkward smile. "Yes, it can."
Her brows furrowed. "Then why was I discharged so quickly when I was drugged before?"
Alexander had told her that Dr. Lambert was the one who advised her release, saying there was nothing they could do but let the drug run its course.
The older doctor scratched his head uncomfortably and sighed. "Uh... you should probably ask Rock about that. He’s the one who told me to discharge you and, well... to let Alexander be your treatment."
Rain’s mouth fell open in shock.
Before she could respond, Dr. Lambert hastily excused himself. "Alright! I’ll check on Alexander later. You two take care!" He nearly sprinted out of the room, leaving Rain to stare after him in disbelief.
"What was that about?" Alexander asked, snapping Rain out of her thoughts.
She clenched her jaw, realizing how cunning her father-in-law had been. He had played cupid between her and Alexander-using her condition as an excuse to push them together.
"Rain," Alexander pressed, his curiosity growing.
Rain hesitated but eventually sighed. "Yes, I was drugged before. And yes, you were with me."
Alexander’s expression shifted as he processed her words. "So... my father forced Dr. Lambert to withhold the antidote and instead made me your ’treatment’?"
Rain nodded.
To her annoyance, Alexander suddenly grinned.
"Why are you smiling?" she asked, crossing her arms.
"Well," he mused, his voice laced with amusement, "I just think it’s a little... sexy. Too bad I can’t remember what I did to you that night."
Rain’s face turned a deep shade of red. "A-Alexander!" she sputtered, glaring at him while he laughed at her embarrassment.
Rain quickly grabbed Alexander’s phone when it rang, glancing at the screen before handing it to him. "It’s William."
Alexander put it on loudspeaker. "What is it?"
"Turn on the TV. Now." William’s voice was urgent.
Rain’s stomach tightened with unease. She could only hope this was good news and not another disaster. Without wasting a second, she grabbed the remote and turned on the television.
Rain’s fingers tightened around the remote as the news anchor’s voice filled the room.
"Breaking news: A shocking development in the ongoing investigation of Carla Cartier. Authorities have now linked her to the prison escape of Dina Clayton. Police have officially begun questioning Carla regarding her alleged involvement."
Rain’s heart pounded as the broadcast continued.
"New evidence suggests that Carla may have orchestrated the breakout with the help of Rico Alvarez, a mafia with ties to multiple criminal organizations. Alvarez is currently in custody and has made a stunning confession, claiming that Carla Cartier personally instructed him to ensure Dina Clayton’s escape by any means necessary."
Alexander’s jaw clenched as he exchanged a sharp look with Rain.
William’s voice came through the phone, laced with tension. "That’s not all, Rico also claims that Dina was supposed to be Carla’s trump card. She planned to use her as a weapon to get back at Rain."
Rain exhaled slowly, forcing herself to stay calm, but the weight of the revelation was crushing.
The news anchor’s voice continued, cutting through the silence.
"With these new allegations, legal experts speculate that Carla Cartier could be facing even more severe charges. The police are expected to release an official statement soon."
"You did great, William," Alexander praised.
"Of course! I told you I’d make sure Rico talked. Now, Carla is in serious trouble, even the president won’t be able to save her this time. Damn... I do feel bad for the old man, though. I want to see him, but it would be awkward. He probably wouldn’t want to see us either."
William sighed before adding, "I’ll try to reach out to Uncle Arlan and explain everything. I just hope they understand the situation."
"Thank you, William. Take a break once in a while," Alexander said before ending the call. He let out a heavy sigh and muttered, "I need to get out of here soon and help William with this. Even though Uncle Arlan is a just man, we can’t be sure how far he’d go to protect his family. And we can’t rule out the possibility that the president might try to make a move behind the scenes."
Rain took a deep breath, keeping her thoughts to herself. There was still one person they needed to keep an eye on... Tim Clayton. She would personally handle that matter and get to the bottom of everything. Because somehow, all these people were connected, and it was time to uncover the full truth.
