The Beautiful Boss's Personal Bodyguard-Chapter 412
Chapter 412: 412
"Oh, don’t blame them, I asked them to call you. I just didn’t want to get cheated. You know, I’m too honest."
The Political Commissar didn’t say anything, just glanced at him, and then said to the people next to him, "Let’s go." Four people led the way in front, with Ye Tian in his patient’s attire following behind.
"Aren’t you going to change your clothes?"
The Political Commissar turned around again and looked at Ye Tian, asking.
Ye Tian shook his head, saying there was no need since no one would be looking at him anyway.
The location of the meeting was beyond Ye Tian’s expectations. He thought it would be in a place unreachable by airplanes, artillery, or missiles, but it turned out to be a regular room inside a military camp, which wasn’t some secretive second artillery corps. From the window, Ye Tian could see soldiers with their guns coming and going, suggesting they seemed to be engaging in an exercise.
The vehicle stopped in front of a green tent, which judging by the vigilant look of the soldiers around, appeared to be the command post.
The three others following the Political Commissar stayed outside the tent, while Ye Tian followed him inside.
Inside was a row of tables joined together with four people, plus the Political Commissar, making up five individuals in total, most of whom were old men over sixty—a conclusion easy to draw from their white hair and wrinkles.
They were all Generals, except for the Political Commissar, who was in civilian clothing.
"Take a seat."
The Political Commissar sat down and gestured to Ye Tian to sit on the chair opposite him.
"What now, you ask or shall I?" The Political Commissar looked at the old man in the center, remarking in a light-hearted tone, suggesting a good relationship between the two.
The old man wearing the Admiral’s insignia glanced at Ye Tian and said, "You go ahead. This kid’s probably concocting all kinds of thoughts about me right now."
"He wouldn’t dare."
The Political Commissar replied jokingly before picking up the thread of the conversation.
"Ahem, Ye Tian, I’ll skip the superfluous and get to the point. Today, we asked you to come here partly to request your assistance and partly, well, to clear up any misunderstandings and unravel those nagging doubts in your mind. Here’s the deal: if you have any questions, just ask them straight away, and no need to beat around the bush, alright?"
Ye Tian scoffed inwardly, ’Alright, that’s code for watching what I say and not speaking carelessly.’
The elderly men glanced at each other, all smiling noiselessly, seemingly aware of the conversational routines. Seasoned manipulators in their own rights, they wouldn’t have lasted this long in their positions without such awareness.
"I don’t really have anything to ask. You should speak directly. I’ll interject if there’s anything I don’t understand. Is that OK?"
The Political Commissar nodded, "That works too. Old Zhao, you go ahead then."
The old man sitting on the far right looked at him, "You should be the one to deliver such good news."
"Ahem, it’s all the same whoever says it – no one will lose an arm or a leg. I’ll do it."
In the end, it was the Admiral seated in the center who spoke up.
The Admiral, a high-ranking position indeed. In an era where Marshals had passed away and new Admirals were few and far between without wars in peacetime, the engagement of such a figure was no small matter.
"Most likely, you’ve read a lot of the documents, so superfluous talk is a waste of time. Let’s start from the beginning. When the Dragon Team was established, the purpose wasn’t indeed just for protecting high-ranking officials. Of course, that was one of the goals, but not the primary one. The main purpose was to retrieve the supposed Immortality Pill from the legendary Huatuo’s Tomb." The Admiral’s expression became unnatural as he spoke. He could feel the disdain emanating from Ye Tian’s eyes, which made even him feel a bit embarrassed, "Ahem, this was the will of the former Marshal, and the other ten Marshals were also present, so don’t harbor any doubts. Back then, I was just a young advisor, fortunate enough to be involved in this matter. Now, everybody from that time has passed away, and the project was originally halted, but your breakthrough in North Africa has led to the subsequent events."
"Who was behind the ambush?"
"All I can say is that we weren’t directly involved in that matter. Dragon Team has been in decline since the nineties, and as you understand, political shifts are like ’new emperors bring new courtiers’. With the rise of the National Security Department, the inevitable retreat was for the Dragon Team, belonging to a different power faction. We heard about the incident, but the decision wasn’t ours. No matter how ruthless, we wouldn’t push our own soldiers into the enemy’s line of fire."
Ye Tian neither nodded nor shook his head at these words.
"As for this matter, you know, although we all are adherents of Marx’s materialism, in Huaxia, there are things you can’t help but believe in, often tinged with a sinister nature. In the 60s, when the Former Marshal went to Guangxi to mine, the actual intention was to sever the two ancient Dragon Veins in the Guangdong-guangxi Region. It sounds far-fetched to speak of it, but ultimately it’s just speculation by some."
"So, it appears you choose to believe it too?"
The Political Commissar spoke up, "As for matters such as immortality, we never really believed."
Hm? Ye Tian’s interest was piqued; that statement was intriguing. What did he mean by ’never really believed’? Did something happen later that made them believe?
"In ’75, when oil was being extracted in Karamay, Xinjiang, a monster was unearthed in the middle of the night, enveloped in flames, almost burning down the entire Karamay oil plant. Luckily, military troops were present, and after sacrificing five tanks, they managed to kill the monster with 182 artillery shells."
Ye Tian believed that part; given the world situation unfavorable to Huaxia and domestic turmoil, deploying heavy armored units on the border seemed a logical move. He hadn’t, however, heard about the monster.
"The incident was personally attended to by the Marshal, and the news was severely suppressed. The monster was taken to a secret laboratory for scientific investigation. Except for some leaders obsessed with red tape, the other top leaders all took the monster incident to heart, and that was when the top leadership revisited the legendary tales documented in ancient books about immortality."
