Chapter 53: Her Suspicions

Dani frowned as she stared at the vast ocean before them. They still had two days left till they reached Valcrez. She let out a heavy sigh as she started pacing near the back of the main deck, hoping that doing so would ease her worries.

"Are you still worried about our queen?" Taro asked, having seemingly popped out from nowhere. "I told you already that she's safe and sound with our King at Valcor Island."

"I know, and I'm guessing you just arrived after bringing Her Majesty the chest of her garments I gave you?" she rhetorically asked.

In truth, she already knew enough to know that her Queen was alright. What was honestly plaguing her mind at the moment was Chancellor Abel… She still felt wary of him despite everything that he had done for them. Somehow, she couldn't help but feel like he was still keeping things from them.

"Then why do you look weary, Lady Dani?" Taro hummed.

She looked around for a second before she turned to Taro who was now standing beside her. Moving closer to him, she whispered, "What can you tell me about Chancellor Abel?"

Taro frowned. Letting out a breath, he also looked around before he grabbed her wrist and replied, "We shouldn't talk about someone in public like this. Close your eyes..."

Dani closed her eyes, and she felt herself spinning in place as if she was floating. He was transporting her somewhere. Hopefully, somewhere private.

"You can now open your eyes."

Hearing Taro's instructions, Dani opened her eyes. Immediately, she asked, "Where are we?"

"We're currently inside the King's private meeting cabin," Taro answered. "It's protected by a silencing barrier, which means no one can eavesdrop on us while we're here."

Dani nodded as she comfortably sat on the nearest available chair near her, with Taro doing the same in front of her. It would seem in the short period of time they've spent together, she and Taro had gotten along rather well.

"Who cast the spell in here?" Dani curiously asked as she felt strong magic around the room. As someone familiar with spells, she could tell that the barrier had strong residual energy put into it.

"His Majesty himself…" Taro answered.

"He's also well versed in spells and magics then?"

"He was chosen by Master Magnus himself to become his pupil," Taro snorted."What did you expect he should learn during his time under such a man?"

Dani felt her brow twitch at his response. It almost sounded like Taro was subtly mocking her for not studying about their King enough. Well, she wasn't really a bookworm like their Queen, so she skipped some parts about the King in favor of getting to the good stuff like the local spells in the kingdom.

"I see… So King Nikolai can also wield spells and magics," she remarked. "So he's just that powerful… Not to mention an immortal…"

She couldn't help but feel impressed. Although, it would be more remarkable if he'd actually put his skills to use in always protecting his wife.

"Would you like a drink?" Taro politely asked as he grabbed some bottles and glasses from a nearby shelf. "Water, or wine?"

"Wine would do," she hummed.

She remained quiet as Taro poured her some wine. He then poured himself something from a jar filled with ice. It was also color red, but it was distinctly thicker than what was currently in her glass. Well, it wasn't really that thick, but it was still enough for her to doubt what was in his glass.

"Human blood?" she curiously asked.

"No," he quickly replied. "Aren't you aware that all His Majesty's Scions are strict vegetarians like him? We all share the same appetite."

Dani simply nodded as she watched Taro sip on his wine. Looking at him now, he honestly looked like he was the same age as her. It was funny how they were currently gathering information from each other, but instead of resorting to espionage, they were honestly asking anything about each other.

Sipping on her wine, the thought to ask Taro about himself came to her. Of when he became a Scion and why.

"Do you fancy him? Chancellor Abel?"

Dani almost spat out the wine in her mouth as she burst out, "What?!"

"Here…"

Seeing her current state, Taro handed her a handkerchief, of which she quickly wiped away the wine she had spat out on her now-stained dress.

"So I asked if you fancy Chancellor Abel since you want to know more about him," Taro repeated after she was done wiping herself clean. "Understandable, seeing as most women would throw themselves at him. After all, he's a fine looking man with a high-ranking position."

"Why would I throw myself at him?" Dani frowned as she defended herself. "I agree that he looks good, and he's probably the second-in-rank after His Majesty himself when it comes to physical appearance, but I have no intentions of involving myself with a vampire!"

"Why not? Do you hate our kind?" Taro dubiously asked. "Do you have anything against us?"

"Oh t-that… W-well…"

Dani stuttered. Initially, she honestly thought of their kind as monsters that should be eliminated from this world. But then… maybe she was wrong. Not all vampires were harmful and bad from what she had seen so far.

"You look at us as monsters then?" Taro asked with lifted brows.

"No!" Dani burst out with an awkward smile.

"Then why won't you involve yourself with a vampire?" he pondered.

Dani frowned at his constant questions. Why was their conversation going in another direction? She was here because she needed to know more about Chancellor Abel, not because she wanted to share her life story with this man.

"Is Chancellor Abel loyal to King Nikolai?" she directly asked. "How about Lady Rosela? What is their relationship with each other?"

"You're changing the topic. But to answer your question, Chancellor Abel was like a Godfather to Lady Rosela's family for generations," Taro replied. "He's been sponsoring Lady Rosela's Benett Family for generations, and I heard that he was greatly indebted to her family so he vowed he would take care of the Benett for as long as he lived."

"Oh, I see. Is he in a romantic relationship with Lady Rosela then?" Dani asked, not minding how Taro pointed out how she changed the subject.

"I don't know, and I have no intentions of prying on that matter. It's not like I like Lady Rosela… Maybe you should ask Chancellor Abel directly about it," Taro shrugged.

After a while, he stood up and said, "So, if there's nothing more that you want to ask me, then I shall be taking my leave to attend to more pressing matters."

Before she could even blink, Taro disappeared before Dani, leaving her alone in a place where she had no idea how to go back on her own.

"Did he just leave me here alone?" Dani murmured in annoyance. "That bastard. What is wrong with him?!"

She let a heavy sigh as she stood up. She should probably start spying on Chancellor Abel to find out more and ease her suspicions.
