The Devil's Betrothed-Chapter 758: Only For Two Of Us
Chapter 758: Only For Two Of Us
The carriage was ready, with no guard or knight to accompany them. Lucian offered Erin his hand and helped her sit in the carriage before following her inside.
At the signal, the coachman rode away. Inside the carriage, Erin and Lucian were sitting facing each other. While Erin was still conflicted with the chat she had with her brother, Lucian picked up the blanket and put it over her.
She observed him closely, his expression serious as he cared for her. ’Care? He cares for everyone.’
Once he set the blanket around her, his gaze met hers. He could feel her gaze was not that of a happy woman but a little sad, with something else in it, as if she wanted to ask him various questions.
"Do you want to talk about something?" he asked.
Taken aback, she shook her head. ’Maybe I am just being hasty. I shall wait for the day. He is taking me away; maybe he will express his feelings when we are alone.’
The carriage continued to move towards their destination. Seeing her quiet, Lucian asked, "Are you feeling cold?"
Erin shook her head. "No." She turned her gaze away to look out of the window.
Lucian simply looked at her, clearly sensing sadness behind her calmness. He stood up from his place and sat next to her. Erin was taken aback and looked at him.
"This way I can explain you the territory as we pass by," he said and looked out of the window, "Along the way, you will see different parts of the estate.
’Maybe he is just trying to be more comfortable with me. Having a good conversation is good enough as well.’ A light smile painted her lips as she looked outside. "What’s on that side?" she asked, looking at the tall trees. "Forest?"
He hummed and added, "In winter, that part is not accessible. Once winter is gone and all the snow melts, I will take you there."
"It will take time then. Winter is long here," she commented.
"Three more months for spring to arrive," he added.
"You are also new to the Northeast, so you must have studied this place to know it well?" she asked.
He nodded. "Once I was old enough to understand things, Mother and Father told me about my parents and what happened here. They would always talk about what kind of place the Northeast is. Even without seeing it in person, I could almost imagine it, as if the essence of this place runs in my blood."
"Did it feel like home when you returned here?" she asked, curious to know his thoughts.
"Maybe. I was just trying to find traces of familiarity, traces of my parents. But the thought that this place used to be my home, and that I was born here, was enough to make me feel like it’s my home," he replied, as if ready to open his heart to her.
"They say that wherever a person goes, they remain attached to their roots," she commented. "That’s the case for you."
Lucian hummed.
"Are you happy to be back here?"
He hummed again and said, "I am happy that I can give a good life to those who sacrificed to protect me. Maybe that’s what I desired most, other than just avenging my parents."
Erin knew Paul, Gwen, and Rina were truly so important to him, and she knew it was the right thing. If not for them, there wouldn’t be any Lucian. She was certain they were good people, and she resolved to treat them like her own, with the respect she already held for them in her heart. For here, though not by blood, they were Lucian’s real parents.
Erin looked outside and asked, "What exactly is the place we’re going to now?" ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com
"The place that is meant for only the two of us," Lucian replied.
Erin looked at him, feeling puzzled. ’Only the two of them?’
He looked back at her beautifully puzzled face, taking in her appearance so closely that he never wanted to stop looking at her.
"There’s a beautiful place said to have been built by my parents before my birth, as a gift for me. Since it’s especially for me, that place would mean to be for you as well. So, it’s only for the two of us," he explained, his eyes never leaving hers.
She didn’t know why, but all of a sudden, she felt nervous and lowered her gaze, not knowing what to say or how to react. Just for the two of them? It sounded kind of intimate to her, and the way he looked at her felt... different.
She looked back out the window and said, "Well... it’s good to have a place like that..."
They continued to ride in silence for a while before Lucian spoke. "This estate is huge, and it will probably take a month for me to show you everything. Once winter is over, we’ll do it."
"That sounds good," she replied, keeping her calm.
"Are you cold?" he asked, as her silence concerned him.
Erin shook her head. "Not really. This blanket is warm enough." She glanced at him, realizing he was sitting just like that, without covering himself with a blanket. "Are you feeling cold?"
"It’s bearable," he replied.
Erin didn’t know how to tell him to get inside the blanket. She looked around. "Is there only one blanket here?"
He nodded. "Don’t worry about me. I’m used to the cold."
Erin sighed inwardly. ’Will it kill you to act a little less tough and admit you’re cold so I can offer to share the blanket without it drawing any other meaning? This man is truly tactless. I just don’t want him to fall sick.’
Giving up on his dense nature, Erin finally extended the corner of the blanket toward him. "The blanket is big enough."
Lucian looked at her and accepted it. He moved a little closer to her, letting the blanket reach him without disturbing how she was comfortably wrapped in it.
The moment he moved closer, her heart skipped a beat. Despite the cold, she could feel the lingering warmth from him. As the carriage moved, the side of her body would occasionally bump against his.
She was clearly affected, while he sat as usual, unaffected.
’Maybe it’s a good thing he feels nothing, so I can stay calm.’
