Chapter 47: Embarrassing (1)

In the Kennedy home, Kate sat alone in her room on a chair placed by the window so she could look outside. A book on her lap, which she was meant to read, remained closed since she had no use for it.

Kate wished Noah would stop trying to get her to do pointless things she didn’t care for. She didn’t want to sit by a window and watch people walking around, but since she could not move, she had no other choice.

Kate didn’t want to read the book, but each time she moved it, the silly maid would place it back on her lap.

Kate was certain they were all mocking her, enjoying that she could not move without their help. They couldn’t do this to her before when she was in her prime and under her father’s care.

"Miss Kate-"

"It is Lady Kate," Kate said, taking the same book she wasn’t fond of to throw at Mary. "You don’t address me as I have instructed you. I should fire you."

Mary picked up the book Kate threw. By now, she was used to Kate’s outburst. "I apologise, Lady Kate. I came to inform you that Mr Kennedy is home. Should I help you down?"

Kate glared at the rude young woman. She knew Mary had a cunning nature to her since she smiled more and acted innocent when Noah was around.

"I don’t want you touching me," Kate replied, looking away from Mary.

Mary didn’t respond and stood patiently waiting for Kate to need her.

"You do this to purposely annoy me, don’t you? You’re acting all sweet when he comes around since you think you can get his attention. His wife cannot walk, so he must want a woman to comfort him," Kate said.

Mary bit her lip, wishing she could respond to the accusations, but Kate would only yell and not listen to anything said.

"Everything here is in my name, so if you think you can sleep with him to get any of it, then you are mistaken. Noah is a common man, but he is not a fool. Though I cannot walk, I am far better than you ever shall be," Kate said, looking at Mary once again.

Kate saw herself as the one with status in her home. The one with wealth.

The only one who was likely to get her money once she was done with it was Warren, not Noah.

"I am not after such things," Mary replied, immediately regretting the response.

Kate laughed.

Kate assumed Mary had forgotten the kind of life she had before the one she shared with Noah.

"I know women like you well. This is a good chance for you to strike since I am locked away, unable to walk, or show my face. I have become forgotten in this town. My name only comes up when they wish to tie me to a man who murdered women," Kate rambled, recalling her past.

"Do you not think there is a good chance to seduce my husband?" Kate yelled.

Mary didn’t think any of those things and did not understand why Kate tried to put words in her mouth. She had never once tried to insult Kate or had any bad thoughts about Kate.

Mary adored Kate for reasons she couldn’t share at the moment.

"I don’t want Mr Kennedy," Mary replied, lifting her head.

"What?" Kate responded, more angry than before. She started to laugh. "Have I married a man so beneath me that you don’t even want him? Ha," Kate raked her fingers through her hair.

Is this truly what had become of her?

Kate once had duke, marquess, and other wealthy men vying for her hand. Now she was married to a man who couldn’t get a maid to seduce him.

"No," Mary panicked. "Your husband is a man many would fall for."

"So now you will admit that you want him," Kate accused Mary. "I knew you. You little demon woman. Even in this state, you are no match for me. My husband will not go to you."

"Enough," Warren said as he walked into the room. "Stop accusing her of things that she has not done. She’s not trying to get into my father’s bed. You need to rest."

"No," Kate said, shaking her head. She pointed at Mary. "You heard her, didn’t you? She looks down on the kind of man that I have gotten married to. She laughs at me in secret, doesn’t she?"

"She could never do this to me before. I was the daughter of a baron. I married a marquis. I was the most sought-after woman in Lockwood back then. If I hadn’t gotten injured, I would have married a wealthy man," Kate said, certain of it.

Everything only failed because she could not walk anymore.

"I could have gotten married again. I could have been the talk of the town. I just needed my mother," Kate rambled, ignoring that Warren lifted her to her bed. "I am better than all of this. I was-"

"Envied by everyone because of your beauty," Warren finished for Kate. He had heard this many times. ƒгeewebnovёl.com

Kate stared at Warren before pulling her hand away from him. "How did I end up with a son like you? I shouldn’t have married him. What was I thinking?" She asked, hitting her head.

Warren helped his mother to bed, ignoring what she said since it had been said before. It only happened during moments when she got too upset and wasn’t thinking properly. She wasn’t going to remember anything she said, or maybe it was only what Warren believed.

If his mother knew what she said to him and pretended to forget when she was in a better state of mind, then she was cruel.

"Leave us," Warren instructed Mary.

"Why can’t we fire her? Why does your father keep her here?" Kate asked as she laid down. "He can’t embarrass me like this. I am already embarrassed."

Kate was certain her old friends were laughing at her. She was set to do better than all of them, but she ended up with a man who built homes and had nothing else to offer her.

"He loves you too much to leave you. You need to rest," Warren said, tucking his mother in.

Once Kate was comfortable, Warren left the room. It was moments like this which made him hate the Collinses even more. There was never any help to deal with her mother’s state.

"Warren," Mary whispered, touching Warren’s arm when he stepped out of the room. "She misunderstood me."
