Chapter 49: Embarrassing (3)

"I can’t do it," Warren said, having no use for other work now.

"Weren’t you the one speaking of needing money? Some people need to work for what they want. It won’t be hard work for us. It is only a garden house to fix. It shouldn’t take more than a day to do," said Noah.

"I don’t need money, and I want to redefine myself in this town. My mother dreads everyone looking down on us. Think of how she will feel to have me continue to build homes. You should go by yourself," Warren said, having no interest in that work again.

Warren no longer wanted to be the son that his mother despised. He could be so much more, and with the money he got, his dreams would happen.

Noah didn’t understand the sudden change. "It is not embarrassing work. There are plenty of well-sought-after men whose families take part in this business."

Warren laughed at his father being so naive. "Those families employ others to do the hard work while they take all the credit and get better pay. I want to make something of myself. I want to become a man my mother is proud of. You should do the same," Warren suggested.

Noah placed his hands on his waist, holding back from yelling at Warren since Kate was resting. "I am the same man your mother met years ago. I’ve taken care of the two of you as best as I could. Any kind of work to keep this home going is not embarrassing."

Warren laughed. His father’s innocent act no longer worked on him since he found out the truth years ago.

"The fact that you remained the same man is embarrassing. We both know that if she could walk, she wouldn’t have married you. She settled for a man she could be better than. Should I speak on why you really married a crippled woman?" Warren asked, more than willing to share what he knew. "I have been waiting to speak on it."

"Just this once, I am going to ignore what you said to me. I know it can get a little frustrating when your mother rambles. I suggest you cool off and prepare for work tomorrow," Noah said, not taking no for an answer.

Noah had his limit with Kate for special reasons, but he was at his limit with Warren. He was long tired of speaking sense into Warren, so he didn’t bother with it anymore. He was quite certain Warren inherited the same issues as Kate.

"Tomorrow, we are going to work for Ronan Prescott. He has offered me a great deal of money, and the only way I can finish the work on time will be with your help. You’re going to help me then because I already mentioned your name, and then you can find your own work," said Noah.

It was time that Warren found his way in life by himself. Kate was wasting money on a son old enough to take care of himself.

"I shall see you ready for work in the morning or get out of our house if you don’t want to work," Noah said and then proceeded to leave the room.

"It is my mother’s house," Warren said before Noah left the room. "She’s the only one who could get rid of me."

Noah smiled. "We’ll see."

His marriage to Kate meant part of the home belonged to him, and with Kate’s state, Noah made most of the decisions.

Warren clenched his fist, annoyed that his father was setting him up with work he did not want. Still, a man like Ronan was someone Warren wanted to speak to.

He needed to start becoming close to the wealthy men in Lockwood, so the next day, Warren joined his father for work.

Warren stared at the mansion which made his home look small. A home like this was just what Warren needed, and he could have if his mother had given him the house belonging to her late husband.

"We’re here to do work for Mr Prescott," Noah informed a guard.

Warren kept his head down, not wanting his face seen by anyone walking around.

"We’ve been expecting you," Amelia said, walking up to Noah with two maids behind her. "Let me show you where you’ll be working."

Noah looked around for Mr Prescott. It didn’t feel right to walk around with only the young woman before him.

"I think it is best that I speak to your father," Noah said.

Amelia smiled. "I understand your concerns, but this is my home, so you will do as I say. My father’s servants are all around, and the maids behind me are the ones escorting me. The garden house was a gift to me, so I want to show what needs to be fixed."

Noah didn’t think it was a good idea for it to only be Amelia to be here, but so he wouldn’t offend anyone, he decided to follow her.

"This is my son, Warren Kennedy," Noah introduced Warren.

Amelia looked at the man she had been waiting for. "I believe we have met before. I have seen him at balls around the town, but we never got the chance to speak. It is nice to be finally introduced to you."

Amelia curtsied.

Warren returned the greeting, but he thought Amelia to be odd. She had never once glanced his way or acknowledged him.

Warren knew women like Amelia very well. She was obsessed with men who had titles and looked down on the ones who didn’t. She liked to put on an act to present herself as a kind-hearted lady.

"It is a pleasure to meet you, Miss Prescott," Warren replied. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

"The garden is this way. My father isn’t home at the moment, but my mother is. She will join us in a moment after she is finished speaking to our other visitor. I am only here in her place for a moment," said Amelia.

"You only need to tell us how you want the garden house, and we shall have it done to your liking by the end of the day," Warren said, annoyed by Amelia trying to stick close. Who was she trying to fool?

Amelia bit her tongue. If she didn’t need him to find out more about his mother, she would have sent him away.

Amelia eyed Warren from head to toe.

How was it that a man like this was related to Penelope Collins?

She wanted to laugh since Penelope came from a family of strange people.

"I do not plan to stick by your side all day since I would only get in your way. I am only showing you where you need to go, so please, quietly follow me," Amelia said, hoping Warren knew to stay quiet.

She was giving him work which she was certain a man like him had never been so fortunate to have.

’Worthless fool,’ Amelia thought, turning away from Warren.

Once she was queen, even Warren might not have a place in Lockwood.
