Chapter 76: Too Smart for His Own Good

The words "I have money" struck everyone, except for the demons, into silence.

N’zall wasn’t one to be left behind. "Money is not the issue! Anything else you need, just say it! Fights, killing, arson, throwing bodies around, anything, I can do it!"

Illiya: ...

There was no need for that! Which elf would hire demons to kill or set fires?! Elves were known to take revenge immediately, without any need for these kinds of after-the-fact actions.

Seeing N’zall and Ke’Oth about to speak again, Illiya quickly interrupted, "Enough, I really don’t need those services."

"I’ll provide the materials; you just need to give me the corresponding payment. But there is one thing I need help with."

Ke’Oth: "That’s it? That simple?"

N’zall: "Don’t say just one, I can do ten for you!"

Illiya carefully observed the expressions of the two demons and, seeing that they had genuinely agreed, let out a sigh of relief.

When traveling across the continent, one had to be cautious. Some subtle gestures and micro-expressions couldn’t fool a person, and genuine sincerity was easy to distinguish. What they feared was that one moment they might be best friends, only to have a knife in their back the next. Discovering such things truly suffocated an elf.

It was embarrassing!

Still, it was important to be upfront about the specific request.

Illiya decided to lay his cards on the table. "N’zall, Ke’Oth, you two must hold high positions in the Demon Race, right?"

N’zall and Ke’Oth froze for a moment, but they quickly relaxed. However, the brief movement was enough for Illiya to catch it.

Illiya felt that this move was the right one.

It was better to clear things up now than to be mistaken for having ulterior motives later.

"I just came out of the Elven Forest," Illiya said, "Don’t worry, I still don’t know your exact identities."

Ke’Oth who is puzzled, asked, "Then how did you know we have such high status?"

Illiya explained, "It’s the fabric of the clothes you’re wearing and the information you’ve let slip in your speech. At first glance, your clothes seem ordinary, but upon closer inspection, you can see the subtle glimmer under the sunlight."

"If I’m not mistaken, they should be made of Light Feather material. Also, since you keep saying ’The Demon King once said,’ it’s hard for me to ignore that you’re very close to the Demon King."

"Anyone who spends so much time with the Demon King can’t be just any ordinary demon. Plus, when you say you have money, that just confirms my suspicion."

Illiya wasn’t just speaking off the cuff; everything he said was backed by facts.

The Demon Race was different from other races. It was a species that revered strength. The stronger a demon was, the higher their status. This led to a strict and harsh hierarchy within the Demon Race, more so than in human society.

During the thousand years without a Demon King, the strongest seven demons divided up the territory and ruled separately. The rest of the demons, in order to avoid becoming cannon fodder in the power struggle between the Seven Demon Lords, joined one of the factions.

This meant that all the resources in the Demon Realm were controlled by the Seven Demon Lords, and the others only survived by picking up the scraps that fell from their fingertips.

Therefore, the demons who could confidently say "I have money" couldn’t be simple characters.

Illiya sighed deeply, feeling powerless. He didn’t even want to comment on his own bad luck. It was truly disheartening for an elf.

N’zall was stunned. He hadn’t expected it to be for this reason, and he found it a little funny. He hadn’t realized how much he had already given away from the very beginning. Finally, he understood why the Demon King had warned him not to deceive others.

It turned out it wasn’t possible to deceive anyone.

Ke’Oth was equally surprised.

However, he would never admit that it was his own foolishness. He absolutely wouldn’t tell anyone that he had actually thought his hidden identity was very well concealed.

That would be too embarrassing for a demon.

But demons weren’t people known for their sense of shame.

After a brief moment of embarrassment, they returned to their normal selves, though not entirely. They were still a little too normal, perhaps.

After replaying the embarrassing moment in his mind, Ke’Oth pushed it out of his mind and completely stopped caring about it.

He took a few steps forward, walked up to Illiya, and grabbed his hand tightly. In a manner that lacked any decorum, he said, "Your Esteemed Elf, you’re truly too smart! You’re the second smartest person I’ve ever met!"

Upon hearing "the second smartest person," Illiya’s mouth involuntarily shot out, "Then who’s the smartest?"

After asking, he immediately regretted it.

Sure enough, Ke’Oth answered without hesitation, "No one is smarter than the Demon King!"

And as if that wasn’t enough, Ke’Oth added, "Even if the High Priest of the Elves were here, our Demon King would still be the smartest!"

Illiya, the future High Priest of the Elves: ...

Thank you, that really hit hard.

...

Illiya regretted it—deeply regretted it.

Why had he humiliated himself by asking such a question?

He clearly knew that demons were all mindless worshippers of their Demon King, and yet he still asked a question with an answer practically written on their foreheads.

Illiya was so embarrassed he didn’t even know what to say. All he could do was awkwardly change the topic.

"It’s like this. I do have a method to help the Ice Flower grow. But it’s a bit troublesome to carry out, because none of us are mages or swordsmen with an ice attribute. So using direct ice magic is already off the table."

When N’zall heard the first half of that sentence, his spirits immediately soared. But when he heard the second half, his heart clenched and his breath caught in his throat. freēwēbηovel.c૦m
